Nope. DS attends Catholic school. He also has today and Holy Thursday off. His teachers have a retreat today and tomorrow.
My school district has always had Good Friday off, as we have a large population of Catholic students.

I've never had Good Friday off school in my life and neither have my kids. Utah and Colorado. We are having a snow day here in CO today, though!

Get this... We had spring break LAST week. And we have Good Friday off, as well. So all last week off and a 4 day work week this week as well. You'll get no complaints from me. Same, plus we have a half day today! Why are we even here this week? I'm trying not to dwell on the fact that we have no breaks after this weekend until the end of the year ...

DS has Friday off - it was scheduled as a bad weather day. DD is on spring break and DH gets that day off, too. I'm going to try to get my work done early so we can all do something together.

Our school district has Good Friday off.
Normally there would be classes Easter Monday, but it's our spring break that week.

Yes our schools are in session. We also had school back when I was a kid (I'm now in my 50s). You are allowed excused time to attend mass/church.

Our kids are now on an extended school year calender. They have been off all last week and this week...2 weeks. Yes, 2 weeks!! We usually have spring break around easter so we usually have good Friday off. Regular school district.

I'm speechless. I can't imagine Good Friday not being a public (and school) holiday! It certainly always is in Australia. I am on the other side of the spectrum. I am speechless as to why Good Friday needs to be a holiday at all! I have never heard of school being out or being a public holiday. I went to school in NY & NJ and now live in GA with one school age child. Easter and Christmas holidays have been recognised since New Zealand was first settled by Europeans (mid 1800s) because most of the settlers were from England and Scotland where those days were also public holidays. People just brought their customs with them. NZ is certainly not a "Christian" country anymore, but those and other days like New years' Day and 2 January, Labour Day Anzac Day and the Queen's birthday are now statutory public holidays which means a paid day off (other than people in retail!)

We have Good Friday off. Sometimes it happens to be the Friday before spring break so spring break ends up being an extra day longer. Sometimes, it's two weeks before spring break. Our break is always the first week of April so we get a three day weekend, a full week of school (with the Friday before break being April's Fools!), and then break.

ODS is off for Good Friday and has been every year that he's been in school (IL). I grew up in MN and we usually had it off, unless we needed to make up an excessive amount of snow days.

It's funny how regionally different this is. I live in SE MI and schools are closed for Good Friday (the ones I know of - obviously I am not familiar with the schedules of every school!), regardless of when Spring Break falls. I never knew there were schools that were in session on Good Friday until 2 Peas

I'm speechless. I can't imagine Good Friday not being a public (and school) holiday! It certainly always is in Australia. Comments like this always intrigue me. Are you speechless that other religions high holy days are not recognized and children are not given days off for them? From the outside looking in, Christian's who say things like this always seem to not look beyond themselves. I'm not sure why my children, being raised in a atheist home, would not attend school on a Friday or a Monday because the Christian faith has a holy day on Sunday. Ha, ha, yeah, point taken! I am Christian and so that was part of my surprise (we go to church on GF, so I guess we'd have to apply for a day off if it wasn't automatic). But as another poster pointed out, the main reason for my surprise is just that it always has been a holiday in Australia, so it would just be weird for me if it wasn't (religious reasons completely aside!). I do realise I sounded a bit "holier than thou" by saying that I was speechless - that wasn't my intention! I really just had no idea that it wasn't an automatic holiday in parts of America - shame on me for being so naive! But you have given me food for thought about why Christian holidays are marked with public holidays (in Australia at least!).

We are in school....I live in the buckle on the Bible Belt and have always found it odd that the very same people who would love to see us pray, do Bible study and other religious things that clearly violate the establishment clause in a public school setting are absolutely fine with having school during Holy Week. I really just don't get it. When I was in college, my university was on a quarter system and the first day of classes for spring quarter one year was actually on Easter.

For those that have Easter Monday off, is there anything religious that is typically done? I was raised in a religious home, but not Catholic. There was no Good Friday and Easter was a one day thing.

But you have given me food for thought about why Christian holidays are marked with public holidays (in Australia at least!). It's ok, I'm PMSing so I think I came off more snarky than necessary. I just think about it from an outsiders view that I didn't have until adulthood. What seems perfectly fine and normal when you are a part of the religious culture suddenly becomes really noticeable when you depart from that way of thinking. Just last week my daughter invited a friend to a movie. She texted back with the reply "I can't go today, it's the Sabbath". My daughter, who has been raised agnostic at best had to ask me what the word meant. Of course being raised Christian I instantly remembered that it was Sunday, to us a second day of being out and about and doing stuff on our weekend, was not how I grew up, and not how many others spend the day either.

Day off for my NYC Public school 10th grader. She was shocked that UI had to work. I work for the government and normally our schedules are the same.

I'm in Washington and we always have school. It makes sense- Washington is the least churched state (or one of the least along with Oregon depending on what article/poll you read). Today I am at Washington state's dance and drill Competition so Good Friday is so unimportant in Washington (not to me personally) that they even schedule a huge event attended by schools and families all over the state on that day.
