Just curious, if you have an iPhone, why did you decide to also get an iPad? Verizon is having a promotion on iPads and I'm tempted but I also have the iPhone 6s. Aren't iPads, and iPhones pretty much the same?
Thanks, Karen

Because the screen on the phone is just too tiny! Even DH's iPhone 6 something.

Our household has both. My husband and I have never really used the iPads because the iPhone and a laptop cover most everything you would want to do except some games. The kids were really into the iPads until they got the newer iPhone, now they just use the phone.
Unless you really like games, you probably don't need the iPad. I am, however, curious to see the other responses to this thread.

Think of it as a stair step. The iPhone is great for phone calls, texts and FaceTime. The iPad would be the next step up. It doesn't do calls but it does messaging, FaceTime, makes internet surfing so much easier, watching netflix etc easier, reading, typing emails, working with photos etc easier. Then the next step would be the MacBooks....more powerful than the iPad, a full based computer so that you can do papers, better editing software for photos, but still does pretty much what the iPad does, just better, faster and more efficient. (Although I will say I looked at the iPad pro yesterday and if they can't fix my laptop, I may replace it with that baby!!!) after the MacBooks comes the iMac which is the grandaddy of computers With each upstep you get better quality, more efficient, more power, bigger screens and more options. I can play my World of Warcraft on my iMac and my laptop, but not my phone or iPad. Honestly it works better on the iMac than the laptop but I can still play if I really had to. They all sync together making life oh so much nicer one note about iPads. I have never gotten one with cellular service. I use wifi. The price is cheaper and I have never had an issue where I wish I had the cellular connection. Worse comes to worse my phone can make a hotspot for my iPad, but again Ive never had to use it.

My laptop is actually the property of my employer, so I don't take it anywhere except home, work, and work-related trips. The iPad can nearly function as a laptop, but it's just a bit easier to toss in a shoulder bag. It's also great for reading books (instead of a Kindle or Nook) and using Google Maps in the car (DH does the driving; I navigate), peaing, emailing, or even doing light documents. The phone is just a bit small for those things.
I have been so glad to have the iPad with cellular service. I use the AT&T service, and I only turn it on when I'm going to travel. I don't have my phone set up for use as a hotspot. I love not having to pay the outrageous wifi fees at conventions, and I especially like having it on long drives.

My ipad has pretty much replaced my laptop. I still have and use my laptop but only for managing pictures, using my cameo, things like that. Everything else I do on my ipad...surfing, texting, emailing, reading, games, netflix, youtube, etc.

I have a first generation mini iPad and just got an iPhone last week. I only check FB and my emails on my phone when I'm at work because we don't have access to either on our work computers. At home I never surf the net, check FB or my emails on my phone. I use my mini iPad for all of that. I want to actually see what I'm looking at on Pinterest

I bought an iPad back when I still had an iphone 4S. The bigger screen of the iPad was so much nicer. I used it a lot, especially for couch surfing. But, I have now upgraded to an iphone 6S+, and I must say that I don't use the iPad as much. The screen on the 6S+ is big enough for most things and I just find myself grabbing that more than the iPad now. I am tempted by the new iPad Pro that was just announced on Monday, mainly because I want to play with the iPencil.

I have an iPhone, but not an iPad, but I've been seriously considering getting an iPad, so I'll tell you why. Part of it, for sure, is the big screen on the iPad -- I use my phone to check FB, this board, etc., as well as watch a few TV shows here and there, and the big screen would be so great. But also, when I got my phone (my first smartphone), 16g seemed like tons and tons of storage. Well, it's not. I want a device with more storage, so keeping my current phone but adding an iPad would be good solution for me.

I'm between laptops now, and for the most part I haven't really missed it, because of my iPad. I had an iPad before I had an iPhone. I consider my iPad a necessity--the iPhone not so much.

I had my iPad long before I had an iPhone. I have a laptop but I prefer the iPad for surfing, playing games, etc. in bed at night - it's lighter than the laptop.
I got the phone because the old service we had (Virgin Mobile) didn't work in either of the small college towns where my kids are, so we had to switch to Verizon. Might as well get an iPhone when we did that, much to dd's happiness. lol
My iPad doesn't have cell service and now with my phone I don't need one that does. Mine is so old that I'm sure I'll be replacing it soon, but I'll still get one with just wifi. The screen on the phone is too small for these old eyes to do much reading there. lol

I use my iPad for music, games and podcasts 99% of the time. The other 1% I use it for the Project Life app while I'm on vacation (which is about the only time I use that app). I have an iPhone 6S Plus but I still like the bigger iPad screen for doing my layouts in the app.

I still have a 5S iPhone (and will til the sucker stops working), but I use my iPad all the time. The bigger screen just makes it easier to use. I have mine in a keyboard case so if I'm responding to emails or even texting, it's just easier and faster. Also, it's all I watch Netflix or Amazon prime on. Better for reading on, and all around web surfing. I am very interested in the iPad pro, but at the current price I'd probably rather just buck up and buy a Macbook.

I had the first iPad before I had an iPhone. I use the iPad for tons of things: reading and posting here, surfing, shopping, email, messaging, games, videos, reading, editing newsletters, etc.
I use my iMac for some things like online bill paying and shopping and when I want a bigger screen for working on things.
I love my iPhone but I rarely use it for surfing or looking at things online.
I will be ordering the new 9.7 inch iPad Pro, to replace the first iPad Air that I currently have.

The Verizon iPads most likely on sale because they want to sell you a cell phone plan to go with it. My iPad only connects to wifi, not cell. I use it at work for meeting agendas and notes (Evernote), presentations (connect to a TV monitor), and at home in rooms without a tv (usually FIOS for news in the morning and Netflix) as well as email, messaging, and of course, Pea-ing.
Even with an iPhone 6 plus, the screen is too small to do a lot of tasks comfortably. I also have an Apple Watch, which gives me another layer of connectivity so I don't miss messages and calls, plus lots of other fun things. Do I need them all? No. Do I like having them all? Yes!!

Also, I bought a case with a keyboard and I love it. The iPhone screen is too small for me most of the time. I recently bought an IPad Air and handed my third generation iPad to DH. That said I do use both equally, but really enjoy the larger screen of the iPad.

My ipad2 just died and am going to check out either the pro or air2. I don't think I need alot in size since the old ipad was only 16gb. I usually use mine to play games (monster buster!) or solitare, surf the web, come here and facebook. I do use it to stream videos, too and check emails.
ETA: oh, yeah, I do have an iphone 6 which I use to check emails, IMing, texting and wechat.

Thanks, Karen I had the iPhone and I got the iPad for the kidlet. She likes it for streaming videos and playing games. Basically the iPad is for things where you want a larger screen. My iPhone will do pretty much the same stuff but on a much smaller screen which can be hard to see at times. I have the iPhone 4s with a four inch screen, I think.

katlady I wasn't even interested in a new iPad until yesterday. I played with the current iPad pro with pencil and OMG Im in love!! My macbook pro may or may not be a "cheap fix" so depending on what they quote me on tomorrow, I may be in the market and Im soooo tempted by that iPad pro and pencil. I like the new one they just announced being a bit smaller and nicer to my pocketbook too. The current one is HUGE and heavy but still soooo drool worthy Now if only my boyfriend Jon Bon Jovi would hand me his credit card A girl can dream right??

scrappinspidey2 Yes! The first iPad Pro was too big and too pricey. I am glad the newer iPad Pro is smaller and a little bit less costly. Videos of people using the iPencil have me drooling! It is so tempting. LOL! And, if your boyfriend Jon wants to buy me one too, I won't turn it down!

When my DH upgraded his iPad, I got his old one. I thought it would be a nice toy, would give me the trifecta of Apple mobile devices - a laptop, an iPhone, and an iPad. LOL I haven't opened my iPad in at least a year. I kept DH's old iPad until the one DH had bought became passe, then I insisted he get ME the newer one and that he get me extra memory.
Honestly, I run my business and my life off this thing. I am 50 and my eyes have trouble looking at my iPhone screen for too long, plus there are times I'm taking credit card info over the phone and inputting it directly into Square. All of my recipes and menus are on Paprika, so I set my iPad in an easel on the counter so I can see the recipes as I cook. I only buy ebooks and magazines now, so all of my reading is done on the iPad. No way I could read very long on the phone.
I think I'm going to look into selling my older MacBook Pro and buying a new iPad. I want one with more memory!

There is no other word for it. I adore it. It's just wonderful. It is not like any other stylus I have ever used - not even in the ballpark. I take handwritten notes A LOT in the course of a day and it is such a complete game changer for me to now be able to do that straight on my iPad. I have the original iPad Pro and love the size because I review and annotate many PDF documents every day, and having a screen that shows a page full-size is really nice. Throw in the Pencil and I'm not exaggerating when I say these two devices have been the best thing that have happened to technology in my work life in a LONG time. I see the appeal of the smaller Pro, but the big one is best for me. It all depends on what your use case is for the device.

I love and use my iPad all day every day for all of the reasons already mentioned, but also I love the Kindle app, and I take a lot of minutes at meetings and take the iPad along with me, open Word, backup to One drive and I'm set. The long battery life means I never run out of power, and I can put it in my handbag and watch a film I've downloaded from catchup telly on the bus.
The iPad's functionality and usefulness had grown massively since I first got an ipad2. One of the biggest things for me is the ability to add different attachments to emails. I now have an iPad Air.

I had an iPad before I had an iPhone. I consider my iPad a necessity--the iPhone not so much. Ha. I had the iPad first as well, but I definitely value my iPhone over it for everyday use. I have the 5S and I even like the smaller size as it slips into my smallest handbag easily. There are a few apps where the smaller screen is aggravating, but I do EVERYthing on my phone. I rarely use the iPad at home. I use my laptop instead. But for travel, the size and ease of the iPad beats the bulky laptop.

The phone screen is too small for a lot of tasks and my MacBook is an older model which gets progressively slower each time I update. So my IPad Air has replaced the laptop for a lot of tasks like email, surfing the net, YouTube videos etc. I don't have 3g just wifi so basically just use it at home.

When I got the iPhone 6s+ last year, I did so instead of getting an iPad. I have an iMac (which I don't use at all) and a MacBook (just 3 years old), and I just can't justify the iPad, too. My phone screen is big enough for me to do what I want to on it, and I use my laptop at home.
