Potty We camp a lot and go to dog events so when I'm tired of walking 3 dogs I don't even use an extra word It's just potty!

We just tell him to "hurry up". We can't tell him to do his "business" because when he barks at other dogs walking down the street we tell him to "mind your business". Our boy is so easily confused he wouldn't know what the hell to do .

I start out saying "go potty", but it often turns into "just pick a spot already!"

This thread is amused me no end. I've visions of dog owners yelling" go potty" at their dogs!! It's helped by the fact that to "go potty" means to go "mad" in a nice way in the UK.

I read a dog training book years and years ago that suggested using the phrase "hurry up", so I've used that with all of my dogs.

We said "go do 'Good boy'" and he knew what that meant. He would walk to the door and go outside to pee. He was so good about doing that.

I start out saying "go potty", but it often turns into "just pick a spot already!" Ours tend to like to do a full perimeter check every time they are let out, and it drives me nuts especially if I need to go somewhere and I want them back inside right away. We have a pretty big lot, so if they get out of sight it can very easily stretch into a 15-20 minute adventure trying to get them back inside. And now my little old guy is getting senile, so there are times when he seems to forget why he went out there in the first place, and I have to send him back out into the grass 3 or 4 times before he gets the hint! That's when I pull out the "Just GO already!"

We never tell her, she just goes. lol. She goes for two walks a day, plus I take her out on the leash maybe around the block when I get home from work (since dh, who does the evening walk, doesn't take her until much later). Dh also takes her out before bedtime and she knows that's the purpose of that late night walk across the street so she doesn't mess around.
We can't trust her just to go out in the yard because she might not pee, then she'd be poking me with her nose in the middle of the night to go out. So that's why dh takes her out front.
The only time she has to be encouraged is when it's raining. She's kind of a princess and doesn't like to get her butt wet. But I just keep walking and she knows she needs to pick a spot if she wants to go back into her warm dry house.

"I dont think so mutt, get back out there"
We have a fenced in yard and just open the door for him. But sometimes he will pull the "no, I don't have to go that bad" BS (usually if it is cold or raining, which is why we are not thrilled with the idea of repeated opening and closing of the door.)

My Seeing Eye Dog is trained to go just about anywhere I instruct her to go with "Park Time". If you notice the play on words with this palindrome...it's not completely accurate in the letter arrangement or K vs C but it basically means go take a crap!

Louis knows "Go peep." And usually nothing for pooping, but if he's dragging around- "Go find a spot" works every time. It's like he poops on command then.

"Good girl, go pee!" or "Good girl, go poop!" Usually works.

I once visited a sheep farm that also raised and trained working border collies. They had a litter of puppies that were no older than 6 weeks old. The woman who was training them took them outside, clapped her hands 3 times and said "puppy, puppy, puppy, go,go,go". Every one of the squatted at the same time! All of them pooped and peed on command them went running to the trainer for praise. It was the most amazing thing - and made me feel like an inadequate dog owner!

I tell our puppy to go make a Kevin. Kevin is DS piece of sh*t basketball coach. It's stupid, and immature, but sometimes all you have is a stupid phrase, and a voodoo doll to keep you from throat punching someone.

CarolT, that border collie story is awesome!! Not only do we have to supervise our dogs outside, but we also have to sort of 'force' them outside if it's raining or HAS rained and the gravel is wet-- they're so used to the dry AZ weather, they do NOT like to get their feet wet, at ALL!! (the things we do for our dogs, huh??) snappydog, I love the 'park time' palindrome-- LOL!!

crimsoncat05 , we live in Florida, where it is always wet and my dog is "from" the Scottish Highlands, also a wet climate... Piper, aka Princess Fancy Pants hates getting her feet or "under carriage" wet. Interestingly, she loves the beach and doesn't mind getting wet and sandy there!

We have a doggie door so they can go out whenever they want. When I get home from work, I let them out of their crates and tell them "go outside, go potty!" I won't open the doggie door 'til they do otherwise they won't do their business and will have an accident. At bedtime I tell them the same thing.

Go potty.
Now I'm saying Go poo since she was pad trained and prefers peeing on the grass, but poo on the pad. Spring break is going to be fun.

Dang this thread has me thinking how anal I am. I have a few depending on time of day. Just hanging out/after naps etc it's "gotta pee?" after dinner it's "gotta poo?" before bed its "who wants night night potty?" All three jump at those words.

Mine is trained to a potty pad that I put in the bottom of my shower every day. He goes when he needs to when we are upstairs. When we are downstairs, there is a potty pad there also, but I typically let him go outside when down there. He will go to the pad and stand there looking at me. If I don't notice him, he uses the pad. If I notice he is standing there looking at me, I say, "oh, do you need to go potty?" and that is his cue to run like heck to the back door to be let out. I didn't train him to do it that way, he did that on his own.
When we are heading out on an errand, I will tell him to go potty in an acceptable area before we need to go into a store or ride in the car for a long time. We will walk by rocks, trees, and posts for him to pick a place. He will sometimes go maybe 2 drops, but at least I feel better about him being in the car for the next couple of hours.
I don't have any special command to have him poop, but I do for after he does. As soon as he finishes, I get a couple of tissues and tell him to come to me to "let me check you" because I have to make sure there are no strays hanging around on his fluffy fur back there. He will run over and then stand still with his butt toward me, ha ha. I realize it is somewhat gross, but there is typically no one around to see it. And I would much rather check each time than discover something on my couch or bed later on. It isn't a normal occurrence, but when he has gotten into the cat food or my mom has given him something from her plate to eat, he can get a bit of a tummy issue and his stool is looser than normal. I started feeding him a raw diet a few months ago and an additional benefit is the poops are firm, greatly reduced in size, and don't have that horrible dog poop stench. I mean, it smells a bit, but not in a gag inducing way. And since starting the raw, there has never been anything stuck to the back of him either.

When she could hear, it was "hurry up!" Now I have to point emphatically to get her off the front stoop and make sure she can see me with her one good eye.

Our boy goes out on his own, but for whatever reason every now and then we have to remind him to "finish up". This means poop. We know he goes twice a day, but he is like a kid. He wants to play play play and then it is too late so he goes by the door. But before we leave the house. We check to see if he had to go "potty" or the "bathroom". Not sure how that started!

We used "go be a big boy" for our two labs. Which sounds stupid when I put it in writing, but it worked.

This thread is making me smile. I worked with Brad Pattison (Canadian dog trainer) who recommends using hurry up. My rescue from Afghanistan is a wonderful girl...but has her quirks. We walk her 3 or 4 times a day and have learned if she doesn't want to go, she won't. She is funny however... if it's really cold or wet.. she will go within 20 feet of the front door and then pull you back to the house:).
