What changes have they made? They are changing so much in the park to accomodate Star Wars for one. Currently there are many things shut down and will remain that way for quite some time as they build. The train, the boats, several key shows, and more.... My daughter read something to me yesterday that said that in California they will be adding an animal kingdom and avenger's themed park. I love Disney but don't really love all the changes. I do prefer Disneyland over World, as it seems more laid back and easier to navigate. I'm just curious about the boats and trains mentioned above. I know Hollywood Studios is undergoing a lot of work for the new Star Wars area which has resulted in the closing of Lights Motor Action (if not yet, then soon) but what train and boats are closed down? I was there last month and I can't think of what this refers to. Dawn

I hate pretty much anything remotely related to Disney. When I've expressed this sentiment around here in the past, you'd not believe how affronted peas can be. It's not a personal insult for me to strongly dislike, ok, actually hate, a theme park, movies and music and other merchandising which they hold dear. But it's apparently hard to convince people of that.

I never went as a child and I also never saw movies. (Really. I saw Bambi in a theater with my grandma, then nothing again until I was allowed to date at age 16 and boys took me). But I went as an adult for the first time and had a blast. You don't need to know the characters to enjoy it as an amusement park, their cleanliness and impeccable attention to detail is amazing. And it just is a lot of fun. I haven't been to Universal Orlando, but Disneyland far exceeded Universal Hollywood. If we were going for an amusement park, then I would just go to an amusement park and not pay quite so much money. From friends that have gone with children, it seems as for them characters were a big attraction. My daughter loves Harry Potter (we're currently reading the books/watching the movies), which is why I think she would enjoy the Harry Potter World at Universal. And no, you don't have to convince me about going to Disney. We're perfectly happy with our vacations! I am not trying to convince you. It's just different than any other place I've been in terms of how much detail is taken in keeping it nice. We love amusement parks too. It's just different. And I said I want to go to Universal in Florida. That's it. I'm not a disney freak who thinks you should go. I don't care. But for us, characters never mattered (I have a pic from on trip of my son only with Mickey and we have been 3 times with the kids), so I was just letting you know you might enjoy it anyway and you don't have to know the movies or care about the characters to have a good time. I also have no idea about Disneyworld. I've never been.

NOT the happiest place on earth for me. It's just not my thing. I know people say they do it up right, but it's just fake and hype to me. We have adult friends with season passes who go several times a year. Good for them...it's what makes them happy. Give me a National Park any day over Disney.

dnkmmwI think she was referring to DL. Due to the expanding Star Wars land the train that starts at Main Street and runs around the park is closed. The Rivers of America as well, meaning the Mark Twain riverboat and the Columbia sailing ship and the Davy Crockett canoes are not running either and Tom Sawyer Island is closed.

I enjoy it (off peak)
I also enjoy "real" European travel, camping, hiking, site seeing trips, tourist traps, hidden local gems, large cities, remote cabins, mountains, oceans, kitsche, historical significance, cruises, trains, RVing. I've never been on a pure "sitting on a beach" trip, but I'd probably enjoy that too.
Just let me travel. I'll make it a memorable adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed Disney World before the whole dining plan came along, but haven't been back since that became really popular, and I will admit that it sucks some of the fun out of it for me to have the ability to be spontaneous gone from the experience. DH & I previously always went in Sept./early October when lines were short and you could pretty much walk right into to all but the character meals and at times, the most popular restaurants without any advance planning at all. There were far less fast pass rides, and they were more low key. e hit the parks with no plan other than to choose which park we'd start off with each day. Even with the really popular places, we still didn't make our ADRs until we arrived at WDW.
And I just don't think you can still get away with any of that, even if you go at their slowest times. I don't really know that the slowest times are as slow now as they used to be. So I do worry that if we went again it wouldn't be the same for me personally.

I've never cared for Disney parks. I like the movies, in small doses. Anything that is overly advertised or promoted is a turn off. And I hate crowds. And lines.

i was a disney-hater. i got bamboozled into taking our family to disney and i was *very* skeptical. i spoke to someone on their hotline after we booked and she asked how she could make my day more magical and i told her she needed to knock that off. but we went in dec 2014 and had an AMAZING time! i don't care for parades and shows... not pushed on any of the character stuff . but still loved fantasmic (a show) and osborne family lights. we went on rides, stayed at the beautiful contemporary resort with (meal plan - no cooking, no cleaning) and it was a pretty cool experience. i actually booked another holiday for this past december at the yacht club resort at disney but had to cancel due to the dismal state of the canadian dollar.

I went to Disneyland a few times when I was a young person and we took our kids to Disney World once. We enjoyed it but I have no desire to go back. Maybe when I have some grandchildren.
No marathon for me either.

The Fantasmic show, the train that runs completely around DL are all closed. I haven't looked at the time frame for DW. I did see that there were things closed at Hollywoood Studios and my daughter was considering herself lucky she saw them this past summer. Many said Walt would be happy as Disney should be an ever changing project. I question that as some of the oldest rides, at least at DL, are still among the most popular. I do check the Disney app and subscribe to some blogs to keep me aware. I am hoping ot go to DW in January. Fingers crossed.

I love Disney. love it. LOVE IT! And I'm writing this post from the Saratoga Springs Resort at Walt Disney World. We come every March. I first went to Disneyland when I was 1, and my boys first went at 2.5 and 1. The magic through their eyes keeps it as new as when I was a child.
I think there IS a big difference for many people - not all - depending on whether they first went to Disney as a child, or didn't go until they were an adult. For most who started going as young children - at the age when Santa, the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny are still real - it never loses its grip on your heart and imagination.
Disney isn't for everyone, but it certainly is very special for my family. If it isn't for you, please stay away - I'd prefer lighter crowds in March - we come each year in March close to my birthday.

I don't care one way or the other. I went to DW when I was 9 and haven't been moved to go back. I would have taken my kids, but I have the only kids in the world who didn't want to go to Disney!

I have never been to Disney, but will be going to Disney World next year. We have a family event to go to, so decided to go to Disney as a family vacation for a couple of days beforehand. It's all new to me, so I'm actually looking forward to it. I do have to be honest though, I'm more of a cruiser. Get me on a cruise ship, hand me a margarita and I'm happy

I got stuck on Space Mountain when I was 12. We had to be escorted from the top of the roller coaster and walk down, around, and through the ride. I've never really had a desire to go back to a theme park after that, especially Disney.

I LOVE most things Disney.
I could happily live at Disney World (I went there for a month once - best month ever), I love all Disney movies, Disney merchandise, Disney tv shows.
But I DESPISE Disneyland.

We choose to spend our annual vacation money taking road trips with our family. My kids have been to all 48 contiguous states and visited some amazing national parks. I'd much rather hike to the top of a mountain with my family than stand in a crowded line for hours. (And I love roller coasters! It's not that. We go to Six Flags a lot lol. It's the whole Disney commercial hell.)
We have a number of friends that go to Disney every year. I just don't get it. Never will. Too expensive, too commercial, too much of many things I don't like. No thanks.

Not interested. We as a family don't really enjoy any kind of theme park.
DH is the marathon runner in the family. I have no interest in that, either.

No thanks. If you (general you) love roller coasters, then Disney probably isn't for you. There are very very few rides (maybe 5-6 total amongst the 4 parks) that give you the adrenaline rush of a coaster at Six Flags. If that is what general you want from a theme park, then Disney would be boring. I've brought many friends to Disneyland for the first time who were expecting a Six Flags type experience and left entranced and repeating over a number of times that it was nothing like they had imagined or experienced before. While there are some "thrill" rides, the overwhelming majority are theme rides/experiences.

I know, I'm sorry!!! It's just soooo boring And our beaches here in Washington are not warm and sunny very often. They are more cool and windy, so I never really got the good beach thing growing up! ACK. Not boring at all. Of course, I am thinking that the beaches where you are and where I am are a wee bit different. Yes, very different

We are a Disneyland family all the way. We live in Southern California and went all the time with passes when the kids were growing up. It's almost impossible to imagine how people can not like it. DD (18yo) boyfriend is not into Disneyland. He seems like a nice guy, but really, we are all judging him on the D'land thing. Maybe he can be converted...

I mentioned it because I'm wondering what sort of filthy places people have previously gone that the contrast between those places and Disney's impeccable cleanliness is so dramatic. I mean, yeah, it's clean, but so are the zoos, museums and other tourist attractions we've been to over the years.

I grew up in the LA area and went to Disneyland often enough. We've taken our kids. But at this point, it's not something we care to do again. Too much money to stand in lines for an hour to do a ride that lasts 4 minutes at best.
Each time they announce a price increase, we reconfirm our decision to avoid Disneyland.
I've got no problem with people who like Disney. But I've known several who have an entire wardrobe of Disney shirts and every conversation is dominated by the last trip they took or the next one they plan to take. That's annoying as hell. I don't spend much time with those people because I don't want to hear Disney talk constantly. I'd feel the same if they talked about a sports team, a church or politics, it's not Disney specific.

I grew up in L.A., so we went to Disneyland at least once a year since I was born (back when they still had ticket books). Now, as an adult, I can take it or leave it. If friends and family want to go, and they invite me, I'll tag along and I'll have a good time. But, I don't make the effort to plan a Disney trip myself. There are just other places I'd rather go to. And as I mentioned earlier, I also don't watch a lot of Disney movies. Yeah, I am a party pooper.

I mentioned it because I'm wondering what sort of filthy places people have previously gone that the contrast between those places and Disney's impeccable cleanliness is so dramatic. I mean, yeah, it's clean, but so are the zoos, museums and other tourist attractions we've been to over the years. Several places actually. Most notably for me was downtown San Francisco, ugh, it was filthy and on warmer days the air actually smelled like urine. Even outside of some of the most upscale stores. That was years ago so maybe it's better now, but after we left there I had NO desire to ever go back. Some places in Mexico were pretty bad too but that was kind of expected because of the poverty level. Another place that stands out to me is Las Vegas, but that's mostly due to the proliferation of places that allowed indoor smoking which in and of itself is completely gross to me because it totally sets my sinuses off. I have had to go there many times for work in the past and I always hated going there. I realize none of these examples are theme park type settings, but they were still vacation experiences that left us feeling disappointed. The Disney example that stands out to me in terms of really thinking, "Wow! HOW did they do that?" was when we were on the Disney Cruise. I was with DH, DD and a couple that are our good friends. DD was up on DH's shoulders, as were many other small children watching the Sail Away stage show on the main deck as we left port. The place was packed with people all watching the show. I was taking pictures and noticed a little kid accidentally kick over an almost full ice cream drink on top of a towel station, and thinking to myself, "What a mess. I hope no one gets that on their clothes..." And quite literally less than ONE MINUTE LATER a staff person came by through the crowd with a wet towel and cleaned it all up! I couldn't believe it. I didn't know how anyone even saw it at all, much less got over there that fast to mop the sticky mess up. I was really impressed. Sure, other places are clean, but I've never seen anything like that ever before.
