Is the cough syrup guaifenesin with codeine? If so, try taking extra strength mucinex during the day. It's the same ingredient without the codeine so it will keep the mucus from sitting in your throat, but it won't make you sleepy. Make sure you drink tons of water with it, if you go that route.

I have had a cough from post nasal drip since around last August. I have been going insane!! I would say my cough is 85 to 90% better, particularly since I discovered Mucinex severe pain and pressure tablets. Zyrtec, et al have quit working for me, it seems. I used to cough so much that people four or five rows away from me used to comment on how bad they felt for me. I sure hope you can get relief because it is so awful.
I am going to try the nasal rinse again, even though it never seems to do much for clearing out my sinuses. Maybe it will help dry up the mucous, I don't know. I just started on Flonase, so I hope that helps, too. My ENT suggested another med if this doesn't help, but I forget what it is because I left the card at the office and I am working from home today (Lunchtime right now). It is supposed to help slow the production of mucous or something.
I really am glad to see so many good suggestions in this thread because I may end up trying some.
Again, I hope you feel better very soon!

If what you've got isn't working, I agree about going and getting checked by your dr.

anonrefugee, thanks so much for asking. I slept off and on most of the night. I propped up my pillows and slept sitting up which was terribly uncomfortable but at least I wasn't coughing my head off and the cough syrup knocked me out for about 2 hours. I moved to the recliner after that and dozed but the cough seemed to be a bit better. I did try the Netipot this morning so I'm hoping that will help along with the other stuff the doctor recommended. I will pick up some Mucinex but I haven't really had much luck with that, but I will try it again. I am going to schedule an appointment with an allergist if I don't get any relief within the next few days. Thanks so much for all the recommendations, and assuring me that I am not dying from some horrible disease.
