Help! I swear I have got to get some sleep tonight or I will not be responsible for what I do. I have had an allergy induced cough for the last week and have been coughing by damn head off every night since last Thursday. I went to Urgent Care and she prescribed Allegra D, Flonase, and cough syrup with codeine. The cough syrup always does the trick but not this time. I'm so freaking miserable. I can't function during the day and can't sleep at night. Is there anything else that might help? Do I go back to Urgent Care and beg them to put me out of my misery? I have NEVER coughed like this because of allergies. I am going to make an appointment with an allergist, but I need relief now.

There is something in the pollen this year - I've had an allergy cough, too. Never had one before.
Yours sounds like it might have progressed to bronchitis. I would go back and see if they think you need an antibiotic.

There was a coughing cold bug going around here! It lasted for a few days and started off with spring allergy symptoms. Horrible, just horrible. DH and I each thought we were getting the flu.
I'm sorry the caugh syrup isn't working. Delsym and Mucinex got me over the worst phase.
I hope you can rest tonight!

Go back because what you are taking isn't working. Maybe a nebulizer treatment and albuteral would be more helpful.

While I am a fan of Flonase, I'm not a fan of allegra. I prefer Zyrtec or Claritin. You could try a spray of Afrin and see if that helps. That cough is probably caused by the drainage down into your lungs. We've seen a lot of coughing patients this year and there really isn't one thing that is overwhelmingly helpful. NyQuill or Benadryl may help you sleep for the time being.

I am on the tail end of pneumonia; I had several nights of little sleep because of coughing. Can't promise these will help but here's what I had some success with in the last month:
1. Sleeping on the couch. I found that I was able to get more sleep if I was upright a bit. I wedged myself up on pillows in the corner where the armrest met the back cushions.
2. Vaporub on the chest and the sheet pulled up over my nose to direct the vapors.
3. Try some advil; it seemed like the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY part of NSAID kicked in some nights. But I don't know what else is in your cough syrup, so be sure you're not OD'ing on ibuprofen.
4. Some water. Put it in a cup with a straw and after a coughing fit, take short sips through the straw. I found that sometimes the real trigger for my cough was dry throat. Or at least that it was contributing to a cycle. If I could soothe my throat, I could stop the coughing long enough to get to sleep.
Hope you feel better soon.

Is this the first time that this is happened or does it happen every allergy season? I have allergy induced asthma which presents as a cough. I do not wheeze or get short of breath – it's just an old man smoker cough. It's awful. I see a pulmonologist and take Zyrtec every morning, Flonase in the morning and at night, Singulair in the morning, I have albuterol that I take on a daily basis and I have a rescue inhaler that I use when the cough is really, really bad (which isn't often if I stick to my routine). I know it sounds like a lot, but it has helped tremendously. There is not a prescription or over-the-counter cough medicine that will touch the cough I get during allergy season. It took me many, many years to figure this out. Oh yeah – he also has me take Prevacid every single morning. He says I have acid reflux – which I never knew – which makes the cough worse. The Prevacid has really worked wonders.

most of my office is coughing.
I have always had good luck with Delsym cough syrup - it will usually suppress it enough to let me fall asleep

But if it is a rare occasion, and if you can tolerate the side effects steroids--which for me are not bad at all-- it is SO worth it. I usually quit coughing after one or two days on steroids. But talk to your doctor…

I got something called Tessalon from my Dr. It was the only way I could get rid of my cough. Knocked me out at night but I had no coughing spells.

Vicks vaporub rubbed into the soles of my feet (wash them in warm water first) and then warm socks. If you ahve a heating pad, put your socked tootsies on it for a bit. Calms my cough as well as a rescue inhaler. (I don't wheeze with asthma... I can't stop coughing.) Hope you get some relief!

Have you tried a Netti pot? It works great to clear my sinuses and get rid of the post nasal drip which caused a lot of my allergy coughing. Whisky in tea helps too

That is miserable. I had something similar flare up two weeks ago after it was super windy here which kicked up all kinds of junk in the air and the resulting sinus problems and cough was horrible. NyQuil might help you sleep. I use Nasacort to end the sinus drainage which in turn helped get rid of the cough. I also drank warm apple juice with a heaping tablespoon of honey mixed in to sooth that stinking annoying dry tickle at the back of my throat that was driving me insane. I hope you figure out something that will work!

You may want to go back. DS had a cough 2 weeks ago that was so bad, he was coughing up blood. Poor kid-18 and off at college on his own! Luckily it was just a blood vessel that he burst coughing. They gave him an antibiotic and a cough medicine in pill form. Unfortunately, I don't know what it was or what he had exactly. But it sure did the trick.
If it's just allergies, try a Neil Med sinus rinse. I swear by it and I like the squeeze bottle vs the Neti pot--the squeeze bottle shoots the water up into the back sinuses, where I have most of my drainage. I also sleep propped up in bed. It's been such a warm winter in my area that I've had allergy issues since December. May is my worst month, but who knows with this weird weather!?

Bad news...I've spent my entire break miserable. I also have allergy induced asthma which triggers a cough. I don't wheeze either. I was coughing so much I would get into these cycles that would last seemingly forever (5-10 minutes) causing me to throw up. I had a chronic sinus infection that caused me to be on antibiotics for about 4 months, never getting well. I was exhausted all the time and I finally went to an allergist, and I am on Singulair, Allegra, Nasonex nasal spray, Qvar inhaler and have a rescue inhaler. I also have a nebulizer with albuterol to use as needed. I'm also on allergy shots. It's like a miracle, I have my life back. If it's postnasal drainage causing the cough, using Afrin spray at bedtime may dry that up enough that you can sleep. Do NOT use it for more than 3 days, or you can get addicted to it. That is misery (I know someone who did that). Also, lots of hot tea with honey may be soothing. Sorry you're going through this, it is horrible. Once you can get to an allergist and get on the right combo of meds for you, there is relief!

Cough syrup isn't going to work- your coughing is likely caused by post nasal drip. Try a sinus rinse-the neti pot is awkward, but the same company sells a sinus rinse bottle that is easier to use. Just don't do it right before bed. Flonase will work but it takes two weeks. Also, try sleeping with your head elevated. Urgent Care isn't going to do anything for you other than what you already have.

I have this now as well. It's going to be a miserable allergy season What is sort of working for me is taking Mucinex Severe Sinus which has a decongestant (Don't take it with Allegra D!), expectorant and tylenol. I am also using the neti pot in the morning and before bed. I regularly take Singulair and Zyrtec for my allergies and am currently 6 months into allergy injections. Last year when I had this the ENT prescribed a steroid, which helped finally kick it. Feel better!

I had that problem for years, going back to my early teens. Finally the cough is gone and has been for the past two years. The only thing that I can figure has made the difference is that I started taking Aller-tec (Costco generic for Zyrtec) along with Rhinocort spray. The allergist used to load me up with meds and they calmed the cough a bit but it never went away. I am allergic to codeine so the cough syrup is a no go for me. The Aller-tec is very inexpensive and you just take one per day. I use the Rhinocort at night. I was using Nascort spay until I noticed that my beloved Rhinocort was finally available over the counter. It was the one med prescribed by the allergist that seemed to help. He had prescribed Zyrtec before but for some reason the generic from Costco works better.

i've been coughing since before christmas. i know what bronchitis is, and this doesn't seem like it, but i have been wheezing on and off since christmas, too. Sounds a lot like asthma. You can develop it at any age. Sounds you may need some salbutamol (Ventolin) to help. Go get checked by your Dr.

Here is what I do for my cough due to allergies.....
I put a few drops peppermint oil (the kind you buy from the store) on a paper towel and breath it in through the nose for about 10-15 minutes. It opens things up and stops that drip. I usually do this when I go to bed, when I wake up, and a few times during the day. If you start in the morning, it will be gone the next morning.
Laugh or question if you like, but once you try it.....you will do this too.

Instead of using Afrin (which does work, but it's got so many limitations) I would suggest trying Nasacort instead. It's NOT addictive, you can use it every day if you need to, it doesn't make you sleepy and it works for 24 hours. For me, it helps as much or maybe more than Afrin ever did for almost immediately opening up my nasal passages and sinuses and drying things out so I can breathe and sleep. There are coupons for it in the newspaper all the time, so I would clip one of those and give it a shot to see if it will help. I've tried so many different kinds of allergy pills and TBH the spray seems to work so much better.
