I am hard boiling eggs for the kids to color them Sunday. I always seem to get cracked shells. How long do you cook your eggs? Any tips?

Just boiled ours this morning. I put the eggs in the pot with plenty of room and add enough water to cover. Then I turn on the heat and set the timer for 20 minutes or so (usually make sure they are at a rolling boil for 15 minutes). Drain the eggs into a colander and run cold water.

Sometimes the shock of putting a cold egg into boiling water causes the cracking. Take the eggs out of the fridge several hours before you start. Or try steaming the eggs - 12 minutes in a steamer basket will hard cook them. Since they sit in the steamer basket and don't rattle around in the pot they're less likely to crack. But still, try letting the eggs come to room temp first.

Eggs in water over high heat. Once water starts to boil turn off heat and cover with lid 12 minutes. Cold water bath after 12 minutes. Perfect hard boiled eggs with no green ring. Cold bath helps with easy peeling.
