I'm still chuckling about this...
DDs are almost 25 year old identical twins. Close family has difficulty telling them apart. They're *identical* and dress very similarly, are the same size, etc so you have to look them in the face to see who you are talking to. We ran to Wal-Mart to pick up a couple last minute items a little while ago and the cashier says, "Are y'all sisters?" As twins they of course get a lot of comments so DD1 says "We're twins!" and gives a big smile. The cashier goes "Oh...sorry. I thought you all might be related. You look a lot alike. Well except that one (gestures towards DD2) she looks way older than you." We had a really hard time not laughing but definitely didn't want to embarrass her.
Twin moms-I know you have them...share some of your funny comments from strangers!

Lol. I don't have twins but this reminds me of one night last year. Dh and ds (then 4) were taking about ds's friends at school, Joseph and Jonathan. Dh asked "are they twins?" Ds exclaimed "no they are PEOPLE!!"

Oh and here is one when I was coming out of the mall one time:
"Hi. We are on vacation here, and we have never seen triplets before let alone identicals. Can we take their photo?"

My friend's father is a twin. A fraternal twin whose "other half" is a woman. Years ago, during a family gathering, my friend's MIL look at the two of them and asks, "So, are you identical?" Despite the stunned silence in the room, MIL persisted with her question.

My sisters are twins. DD was 3.5 years old before she ever saw them together because they lived in different states. After we got home, DD wanted to know if they were twins, why didn't they live together!

I have a twin brother - growing up people would always ask my mom if we were identical! Her response? Only above the waist! lol People can be idiots.

I'm not a twin mom, but I am a twin daughter, and a twin aunt. My funny story is about my identical twin nephews. When they were maybe 18 months old my sister took Brian to a mirror and said "who is that?" His reply: "Brent!" Perhaps you had to be there, but to us it was very funny.

My sister-in-law is a mirror image twin (that's an even more rare type of identical twin, for those who aren't familiar) and she and her sister look very much alike. When their kids were little, they didn't really differentiate between moms. They would just run up to the first one they saw, crying Mommy, Mommy! and accept help or comfort or whatever. So these twins are 60 now, but both are still very youthful-looking and pretty, and still identical enough that I have to pay attention to differentiate. A few years ago, they were in Las Vegas with their third sister, and my SIL got carded by a waiter. Only my SIL. Her twin sister said, what about me?! He said, oh, it's okay, I don't need to see your ID. She was outraged.

Granted, when they were bald little babies they did look very much alike, so much so that even my dh mixed them up. My mil had sent two identical Patriots union suits for the babies, but had sewn a length of lace down the placket of one of them. One day I got home and DH had dressed my son in the one with the lace and my daughter was wearing the plain one. I said to him "I guess you didn't change their diapers, huh?" Busted.

My sisters are mirror image twins as well! I've never known another set. My sisters are even opposite handed (one right and one left). They look so much alike now that it can be difficult to tell them apart. Drives me nuts! When they visit each other, they enjoy going out and confusing people, even at 56!

That's the easy way to tell they're mirror image ... it's always one lefty and one righty. My SIL says they used to have to go into San Francisco for all kinds of testing when they were little because the scientists liked studying mirror image twins.

"From a physician--triplets can't be identical!" What? ? Ugh!!! PLEASE tell me you found another doctor ASAP! How in world did he manage to pass even junior high biology?? A neighbor couple down the street from the first place we had at the beach had twin daughters. They had such a hard time telling them apart that they finally admitted they weren't sure that they were calling the right twin the right name. --I think they wound up piercing one twin's ears since it was easier than a tattoo...

My girls are fraternal, as in they barely look related, much less like twins. I've had numerous people ask how can I tell them apart. After I give them this look: I say that DD1 is shorter and has long hair, where DD2 has short hair. So many have said that they never noticed a difference. These are people like teachers who see them on a regular basis!

My girls are mirror-image twins! They aren't too difficult to tell apart these days because one is very girly and has long hair and the other is tomboyish and has short hair. What's funny is that oldest DD and the girly twin sometimes get asked if the two of them are twins.
The question I get asked most often is "do twins run in your family?" But identical twins aren't genetic, they are mutant freaks of nature. I get tired of explaining that one.
I also had a lady chase me down in the rain in a parking lot once when they were infants because she wanted to see them (they were well covered in their stroller.) I told her no.

Oh goodness, no, he wasn't my doctor! He was just on the elevator at the hospital. I feel sorry for his patients! So relieved! I was seriously worried--triplet pregnancies and premie issues require an exemplary physician! (don't remember your story but know it's difficult to get to 40 weeks with multiples) Even though my brother and I are not biologically related, we looked like identical twins when we were little and still look similar although my brown eyes turned green and my brother's are still brown and he's now bald while I have enough hair for both of us. Once in an elevator when we were 3 a lady asked my mom if we were twins. Mom said, no, there's 3 months difference. The lady put her hand on my mom's arm, looked her in the eyes and said, "Honey, the same thing happened to me!!??!!!"

I have b/g twins who have 2 other older sisters. My DS was convinced he only had 2 sisters. I told him, no, you have 3 sisters. He told me he has 2 sisters and a twin. I guess the twin doesn't count as a sister . I had a friend whose identical twins were part of a study that was investigating whether there was a hereditary aspect to identical twins. You do see them more often in some families than others, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were a genetic component there that just hasn't been identified yet.

People say the most ridiculous things, lol.
I have b/g twins - dd is very fair and has red hair. Ds has darker skin and sandy/dark blond hair (as a child his hair was very blond).
We got the "are they identical?" question all the time. My favorite was the time someone asked if I dyed dd's hair so I could tell them apart.
Then there was the time someone asked me in the grocery store if they were both mine, then if they had the same father!
And and then there were the people who would say "better you than me" and my response was always "I couldn't agree more!"

My best friend from college is an identical twin and when we first met, I thought it was so weird she had a picture of herself on her dorm room desk. I finally just said: "gee, that's a nice picture of you" and she was like: "are you crazy? Why would I have a picture of myself on my desk?!!?!"
I've known her and her sister now for 30 years and can tell them apart instantly. My husband, who also went to college with us, can't. He invariably mixes them up.

I think some people just don't know what the word identical means. They hear it associated with the word twin and they want to know if that applies to them.
My DH has mirror twin brothers. They even have astigmatism in opposite eyes. I've known them for almost 22 years and they can still throw me off.
