No - I also think it's probably not in the greatest of taste to have a KKK sign.

I would think it is done on purpose. You can't be that dense to think a kkk sign wouldnt be taken the wrong way.

If it is baseball, the K's could represent the number of Strikeouts the pitcher has in the game.

The Dartmouth organization predates the Klan.
They call themselves Tri-Kap and they themselves specifically don't put the three kappas appearing as "KKK" on their stuff.
Holding off on the assignment of malice or ignorance because I suspect there is something else going on.

There is also a women's service sorority with the same name. If you do a search on Facebook for Tri Kappa, you will come up with different FB pages for the different chapters. But, they seem to all be located in Indiana.

It seems likely to me that it was for strikeouts, given it was a baseball game. Was it there the whole game and never changed?

Yeah, the three Ks hanging on a fence at a baseball game represent strikeouts. I remember the first time I saw that and was so happy when the pitcher struck out another batter so there could be four Ks hanging.
