I hate to cook, but it there's a recipe I do fine. I follow the directions and it's edible. For some reason I keep screwing up on rolls. I KNOW they taste good when I make them right. I have forgot the egg, forgot the butter, and put the dough in a oven set to warm instead of a warm oven so the dough cooked instead of raised. What do you mess up? Or is it just me?

Not just you. I don't like fudge but DH does so I've tried to make it for him a few times. Every time it comes out grainy. I follow all the tips, tried different recipes, and somehow I always screw it up. I've made caramels and other candies without incident but for some reason fudge is my nemesis! Divinity is another one that is hit or miss, but my homemade marshmallows have turned out every time. It's just weird.

I hardly ever cook steak, because I have a hard time getting it right. I'm always afraid of undercooking it, but always end up overcooking it.
So now I have this new grill pan I love, and my steaks came out perfect (with DS breathing down my neck, telling me to take them out before they were actually done). So I'll do it again sometime soon. Hopefully my luck with hold.

Rolls for me too. They don't taste as good as I expect them too with all the effort that goes into them.

The meringue part of a lemon meringue pie unless you like meringue soup.

Yorkshire pudding. I've gotten close, but they are undercooked, or overcooked, or if golden brown, they haven't risen to be big and fluffy. At least they usually taste good.

Green beans. I can't seem to season fresh green beans so they taste like anything much. They are always bland when I make them.
I can make really complicated meals, but I can't master basic green beans.

Gravy. Oh boy, it is either runny (yucko) or can be used as mortar. I don't like the stuff anyway so maybe that is the problem.

Spongemom, I like kosher salt and lemon pepper on my green beans and like to sauté them. Yum.
Mine is biscuits. I can never get them as light and fluffy as my favorite breakfast place. Mine are always hard little pucks.

Shortbread. Or Scotch Cookies as my ex-MIL calls them. I have her recipe. I've even made them with her. I cannot make them taste like hers to save my life. She still sends a box to me every Christmas!

Rolled cookies. They always stick unless I use a ton of flour when rolling them out and then they are tough and taste like flour. Or they are too soft and don't hold their shape. I love them but just can't make them!

Gravy...I don't even try anymore. Pie crust. I can make a killer pie, but I use a store bought pie crust.

Biscuits. The recipe is not hard and I have seen my mom make it a million times. Every time I do it they come out hard as rocks.

Cornbread- just never tastes right Yeah, a friend in Texas makes the most amazing cornbread but I can't get it right. Of course, it might be something to do with the ingredients available here (at least that's what I tell myself!)

Spongemom, I like kosher salt and lemon pepper on my green beans and like to sauté them. Yum. Oh, I can do sauteed beans or a green bean casserole. I just can't do old-fashioned boiled green beans and that's what my kids always wanted. "Why can't you make PLAIN green beans, mom?" So, I'd make them and then the consensus was they don't taste like grandma's. I made them exactly like she said, but they never tasted the same. Grandma's love, I guess.

Gravy and Jello.
The gravy gets too thick or clumpy and sometimes the Jello doesn't set and a few hours later I have flavored liquid.

I'm a southerner who can not cook green beans to save my life. I've tried everyone's instructions but they just don't come out right so I've given up. DH doesn't like them that much anyway. The other thing I can not do is coleslaw. I love but I have to buy it ready made in the deli section. Walmart actually has good coleslaw.

Bacon ... I either under cook it or over cook it There's no such thing as over cooked bacon. The crispier the better! That's EXACTLY what I was going to say !! Nobody (except for DSO) can ever cook my bacon crispy enough for my liking. If we go out for breakfast I have to tell them to cook it to the point of being burnt, and that way it may come out halfway crispy. ETA: Not liking the sound of leannec's shoe leather though!

I can't make rice to save my life. Me neither! WTH? How hard can it possibly be to cook rice? But no matter which method I try, even in the rice cooker, it's either gluggy or starchy or crusty.
