I was reading the other thread about asparagus recipes and just thought I'd chime in here about asparagus and the way it makes pee smell. Research shows that everybody's pee smells after eating asparagus but not everybody can smell it. So, if you can't smell it, you are part of the 75% of people who don't have the gene that allows you to detect the volatile compounds that are released when you digest asparagus. I'm in the 25% who can smell it...even a stall away.

We can all smell it here. We had asparagus as part of our Easter dinner, and we've been joking about it. TMI, but I could still smell it in our bathroom this morning. It takes awhile to clear the system.
On this subject, I've learned that Honey Smacks (or if you're in my age bracket... Super Sugar Crisp and Sugar Smacks) have this same effect.

I can smell it. My BFF and her DH can't. She had no idea what I was talking about when I said something to her about asparagus pee. My DS and XH both can smell it. I'm surprised at the percentage. I would have thought it was the other way around (75% smell, 25% not).

I can smell it, and so can both my kids, and DH. If you really want to gag, you should smell our guinea pig cage after the 3 princesses have each had a stalk.

I knew my sister had eaten asparagus yesterday after she came out of the powder room. I don't think DH can smell it because he always thinks I'm weird when I bring up asparagus pee, although it could just be that he doesn't enjoy pee and poop conversations as much as I do, the weirdo.

I can smell it. I am amazed, too, that I can eat one tiny piece of asparagus at a party and it smells just as strongly as if I'd eaten a plateful. Bizarre.

I didn't know this, I thought everyone can smell it! Not that we've ever discussed it... does that mean 75% of my friends are polite? 25% ?
Gah.. Now I need to ask my family filled with teenage boys, who like asparagus.

Yep I can smell it. If you one who can smell ever pickled asparagus makes your pee smell. I thought for sure the pickling process would get rid of it. Nope!

I mentioned on the other thread that I don't eat it very often because I hate the way it makes my wee smell, and another person said that doesn't happen to them. So I googled to see why it doesn't make some people's wee smell. Every article I read says that it is unclear whether the wee doesn't smell, or whether those people just can't smell it. They even did tests where Person A could not smell anything, so they got Person B to smell person A's wee, and Person B COULD smell it! So who knows? I also read that the majority of people CAN smell it, not 25%. I can smell mine within half an hour of eating asparagus. BLECH!

I've never heard anyone else say this about Honey Smacks/Sugar Smacks etc. I'm actually excited to finally read this! It's so weird, because that is the ONLY cereal that causes the odd pee smell. It doesn't smell the same as asparagus pee. It literally smells like sugared wheat. Basically just like the smell when you open the box. Too funny! And obviously, I am one of those who most certainly can smell asparagus pee. But I still like to eat it. Edited to add: the unsweetened Puffed Wheat does the same thing, so it's not the sugar causing the smell.

We can all smell it here too. FYI if you enjoy it but want less of a smell when you pee make sure to drink LOTS of water while eating it, it dilutes the smell.

Every article I read says that it is unclear whether the wee doesn't smell, or whether those people just can't smell it. Yes, I recall reading something along those lines too. basically there haven't been enough studies done to determine exactly what happens. The theories are that some people are 'excretors' of the smelly chemicals in urine after eating asparagus, and some people aren't...additionally they think that there is also a genetic component to people who can smell it and those who can't. So it's probably a two fold issue. I definitely can't smell it, so no idea if I don't excrete the chemicals or if I do but I can't smell them. I've certainly smelled lots of pee in my nursing career, but asparagus has never been on the menu in any hospital I've ever worked in so it's not likely that I would have encountered it in that setting! The cat also loves asparagus and someone asked me once if it makes her pee small and I said no, but who knows if we are both 'non excretors' or if she is an excretor but I'm a non smeller. I eat a lot of fresh asparagus, and no-one's ever even subtly hinted at a smell, so I tend to think that I don't make smelly pee when I eat it, but who knows, perhaps everyone I know is just very polite.

I can smell it. The first time I noticed the smell I thought I was crazy and was ticking off UTI symptoms as I thought maybe I had a UTI. Then I realized it was the asparagus.

We have about twenty asparagus plants and right now they are going crazy. We eat asparagus almost every day and will for the next month or so. We all can smell it but since we are all eating it, no big deal.

All 5 of us can smell it. It almost makes me not want to serve it. We grew our own for several years -- it was wonderful to pick it and eat it almost immediately. The bed finally died out and we haven't replanted it. The pee smell is so bad, though.

I can smell it, along with honey smacks, tuna and in some cases, chicken (mainly chicken from a can).
