I'm sure this has been addressed many times in the past but I can't seem to find a recent thread that directly addresses it. I'm in the process of completely an album that in includes a whole year worth of events. I do it in a mixed project life style which means I do one or two 12x12 layouts per events then accompanying pocket pages. The problem is I've felt compelled in the past to incorporate every picture even if they're mediocre. My album for 2012 is almost full and I'm only up to the summer therefore I can't use every picture. No I'm curious what others do with the extra? I can't bring myself to throw them all out. Well maybe a few bad ones. Lol! So far I've been saving a few in an envelope but it's getting way too big. Do you do regular photo albums for the rest? Toss them?

I get rid of the bad pics and store the extras in the Iris photo bins. I add a label to the front so I know which album they correspond with...

I keep regular photo albums as well as scrap albums. I scrap the photos I love and the rest go in the photo albums.

I keep all the photos for the year in a Michaels shoebox. I sort them sort of by date, by standing alternate sets on end. As I scrapbook, I take the ones I want to use out of the box, leave the others there. At the end of the year, I can put them all back to horizontal, label the box and put it away.
That's the plan, anyway. Finishing up things like this is not my strong point! Still have the photos from 2014 in a box on my scraproom shelf, even though I am done scrapbooking that year...
The problem is, I print too many photos. And not all of them are good ones. Last year I experimented with making a discard file as I scrapped at a crop, and then just pitched that pile. Now THAT was traumatic! And I ended up having to reprint the photos from one event that had mistakenly fallen into that pile...

If I print out more photos of an event, etc. then I end up actually using in my layout I just toss them. All of my photos are stored digitally and if for some strange reason I need another copy then no problem to print out another. I try super hard to only scrap the best that tell the story.

I only print those that I know I will use these days.
As I continue to scrap older prints I toss any that are bad or contain people I can not recognize. My dad and my husband both liked to take 4 or 5 oictures of a scene/event and I only keep the best one. The rest go in the trash. There is no way I have the room to store 60 years worth of photos, especially since I've no children and my sister and parents have all passed.
I have no guilt about getting rid of the photos. The ones I've kept tell a story and that is all I want.

I need a system. Some I toss. Some I keep, but not in an organized way. Every so often I come across an envelope of photos and I don't remember if they are leftovers or if I haven't actually scrapped that event yet.

I toss the really bad ones and the extras go into a photo storage box with separate categories by person. I really only save extras that are good ones of people

For pictures that are already printed, I put them in a baggie and write "extra" on them and then they're stored in a container in the attic. I toss any that are exactly the same as one I scraped, or bad pics that aren't necessary to keep (already have similar ones of same event/subject, etc.) For digital it's harder for me to give them up, but I try to delete the ones that are all almost the same, keeping the best one. I spent days last fall going back through several years of digital photos doing this, so now I'm trying to keep up with it as I upload. If I don't have them I can't be tempted to scrap them.

These days I don't have many extras since I only really print a small selection specifically for a purpose, but I have a photo box in the closet with extras of old film photos that I couldn't get rid of. They're good photos, just extras. I figure if something happened where I lost my albums I would be happy to have photos in another place (that maybe didn't get destroyed). I also have negatives and scans, but as long as they fit in the box I figure it doesn't hurt to keep them. I also have a basic 4x6 photo album full of photos of people we love. No details - just face photos slipped into the sleeves. Could any of your photos be sent to family or friends in a letter? I have done that in the past when I've had an extra copy of a nice photos. It's a good excuse to write someone a note and say Hi!

I toss the really bad ones along with any generic scenery type shots that I don't currently have a plan to make a layout with. Photos of people I usually keep as I will dig back through those when I want to tell a personality type story. I recently went through all the photos I had kept like this and tossed a heap more that I wouldn't use. Any pre-digital photos I keep in a slip in album although I have digital copies of most of these now as well.

I only print the ones I'm pretty sure I want to scrap, but I am bad about deleting any 'similar' or 'bad' digital photos. I think I'd do what Chinagirl828 said and keep some to make a 'personality' page. I've also made pages that shows 'progress over time' like a layout that shows our yard a couple years apart to show how the plants have changed; I also make pages of 'random photos I love' if they don't go with a specific event or layout topic. Like a page that's all gorgeous photos of flowers or landscapes, cute dog / cat pics, etc. I also like to sometimes experiment with different scrapbook page styles, and will use the extra / crappy photos to try some of those things out rather than risk using my 'good' photos to try something new that I'm not sure will work.

I have mailed the photos to the people in them with card. I like to save a few of the bad pictures to practice stamping on photos. Twice I've cut them up and made a photo collage on the inside covers of the corresponding albums.

Like others I only print exactly what I will be scrapping. I'm a planner and will print photos in the exact size that I need. To help me plan, narrow down which photos I want to print and the sizes, I print a contact sheet on regular paper for each LO. The contact sheet has thumbnails of each photo I'm considering for the LO. On that sheet I will make/copy a sketch and make notes about photo sizes. I use this at my computer when ordering photos.

I usually only print what I need, but I'm actually working on a layout right now where this is an issue for me. I printed 1-5x7 and 3-4x6 photos. Now that I'm working on the layout. I could have gotten by with 2 of the 4x6's. I can't seem to make myself toss the other 2 photos and I still want a 12x12 layout so I'm using my fuse tool to create a photo book.
I know in the past (when using film camera and having to print everything) I use to put several photos in one pocket so only the best was on top. Maybe that could work for you too.

Since I print most of my pictures at home, I only print those I am actually going to use. If I end up not using a picture, and I can't find anything to do with it (give it away, my desk at work, collage, etc), I toss it.

When I have photos printed, I usually only print ones I know I am going to scrapbook.
But we all know what they say about good intentions....
So, when I get a shipment from Snapfish, I write the dates that the photos span, say from March 1st, 2016 to March 31st, 2016. Then I also write any big events that happened. Jonny's birthday, Susie's recital, Aquarium visit, Pookie's first lost tooth, etc.
Then any pics left in the envelope, and unscrapped, I at least have some reference to go on, should I ever want to look at them again, or give them to someone.

I tell my daughter she can have what she wants and to throw away the rest. I do have an assortment of photos in the basement pre-digital I need to organize.

I print whatever pics I think I will use and toss what I don't end up using. I have them digital if I need them later.

I saw a video from someone, but I can't remember who, where they took their leftover photos and a square punch and punched the most significant thing in the photo (usually a face ) and put them in a shoebox with that person's name or family. I do that now and it's cool to take some out and made a collage page.

I only order by the ones I intend to scrapbook. But once I finish a layout I may decide to leave one out or print some in a different size. Any extras I put in an envelope for school projects or just to hang out until I clean it out. It's a photo envelope from developing so not too many extras are hanging around.
