Is this required where you live? DS's job hired him and after 2 weeks said that he needs a work permit, which we have to get from the high school. In order to get the permit, he needs 3 sections filled out -his personal info (signed by parent) -work info (filled out/signed by boss) -Dr fills out 3rd section and he needs a physical
I find it strange that they are required to get a permit from the school in order to work. Isn't it my job as his parent to determine if working is appropriate for him?
We'll go along with it because it's required, I just wondered if this is the norm?

I grew up in Wisconsin and it's required there. The state has strong child labor laws.
ETA: the state checks on employers to be sure they follow the laws re:working conditions, how late youth work, amount of hours per week, etc.

How old is he? It's been a while, but I remember when I was a teen that 16 was the age you could work without a permit. There may have been a limit to the hours per week as well.

Yes, a minor (who is not a high school graduate) needs a work permit in California, and it is issued by the school. I don't think they need a physical though.

In Oklahoma you need one if you are under the age of 16. And I do remember getting my own from the school office.

I'm not sure here. Both of my kids started 'working' for their dad after school when they were around 14. Maybe the rules are different when it is family? My youngest works almost every day, but he is 17 now. I haven't heard anything about needing a permit at any point though.

Yes, a work permit is required in California. It may be up to a certain age, I can't remember.

In IL, a work permit is only required for those under 16. Light years ago when I was a teen in OH, I needed a work permit for my first job.
When my dd got her first job (she was 17, I believe, so no work permit) we realized that mimimum wage for those under 18 is not the same as the regular minimum wage. My dd made .50 per hour less than that. When she turned 18 she made sure to mention it to her employer. For several reasons, I'm convinced that otherwise her employer would have continued to pay her the lower rate had she not spoken up.

I'm in California, I don't remember having to get a permit but It's entirely possible I've forgotten. A friend of mine had to get a special permit at 14 so she could work at McDonald's. Her father had died and left her family penniless and she had to go to work to help out.

It was required when I was a teen in Georgia, but I don't remember the doctor section. Who knows though - it may have been there!

I know in New Mexico that kids did have to get permission or permit of some kind from the school to work. I'm not sure about 16 and over but I AM sure about the 14 and 15 year old kids. This was McDonalds and I know that until they were 16, there were things they could NOT do, like use the fryer or go into the walk in refrigerator or freezer. Over 16 they could.
Also, up until, I think 18, during the school day, they could only work certain times, we made SURE they clocked out at least a minute or two before the time they HAD to clock out.

I remember DDs had to get one in KY but I'm not sure if it was under the age of 16 or 18. DS worked once he turned 16 and didn't say anything about getting one but he would be much more apt to just take care of it as much as possible on his own and could have had DH sign it for him so I can't say with certainty that he didn't fill one out.

In CA we do. However, it wasn't medical related. Just school related. They had to have a certain GPA in order to work.

I think this is a good idea as some families may make their children work inappropriate hours. When I reflect on my childhood , I'm not sure cleaning out a couple of hundred pigs every morning helped my education!

I find it strange that they are required to get a permit from the school in order to work. Isn't it my job as his parent to determine if working is appropriate for him? It's due to long time Child Labor Laws. There are jobs that you cannot perform depending on age. I think it's a great idea. If your child's physical is current and the school has a copy, the nurse can sign the form...

A work permit is required in my state, but a physical is not. It is required before they start work and the purpose is because there are restrictions on the number and time of hours they work as well as the type of work they do.
Presumably, the fact that your child has obtained the job would be in line with you determining that working is appropriate for him.

My kids needed work permits at 16. The school needed to sign, but there was no doctor approval needed.
It listed specific hours and limitations, but there was also a section that allowed for a waiver of those restrictions and DD's employer required that she/we? sign that. So, basically there were no restrictions.

In Michigan, you need a permit if you're under 18. Each permit is a different color from 15 to 17 and have different restrictions in what kind of hours you're allowed to work. There's a section that has to be filled out and signed by the parent and a section signed by the school.
I only know because I looked it up recently after my ex kept saying it's time for ds1 to get a job (he's 15).

I've never heard of such a thing. When I went out for my first job, my school nor my parents had no say in what I did or where I went. Seems very nanny state to me.

I had to get one in MA growing up. I remember my Dad driving me in to someplace in Boston to get it. I didn't get it thru school. Not sure about now.

Yes, it is required around here - Northern Illinois - not sure if state law or local. It was also a requirement when I was in high school in NY in the 80s, so not a new thing.
As I recall it was connected to child labor laws. I had a different one at 14 than I did at 16 and right on the card it listed what hours I was allowed to work depending on whether or not school was in session.
