I have been taking magnesium for awhile and think it is helping some with my sleep and restless legs. I also struggle with constipation and was hoping for some help with that but am not sure it is having that effect. I take a 250mg tablet of magnesium oxide. I have one tablet left and need to buy more but am not sure what to buy. I have looked at the store but many of the pills are huge. I want something that is easy to swallow (I am not pill-phobic but some of them look really big and aren't coated). I am also wondering if I should look for magnesium citrate (not finding many options for that in stores) or stick with magnesium oxide. I am also wondering if I should increase the dose?
If you have found a mag supplement that you like (or don't), please share! Thanks!

I love Natural Calm. It's a powder that's flavored (with Stevia). I like the Raspberry Lemon flavored one. I struggle with constipation too and it helps for sure!

I take Magnesium Malate because my rheumatologist said many people with fibromyalgia respond better to that form. They are horse pills though. But I'm a weird pill taker anyway. I have to have lots of water in my mouth, tilt my head back and drop the pills in and immediately swallow. I can not stand for pills to touch the inside of my mouth. It's a thing.

dewryce, I know you didn't ask for any advice, but I have had lots of trouble swallowing pills and was told by my doctor that they easiest way to get a pill down is to look down (as if you are sitting at the table looking at your plate).
Also, Kristin, if you like hot tea, Traditional Medicinals has a brand called smooth move that helps with the constipation.

You probably aren't taking enough mg. I take 750 mg at night. No problems.

These are smaller tablets that dissolve quickly. I take for sleep, leg cramps. I was Rx'ed 800 mg (2 tablets) at night but then I slept so sound I didn't want to get up! I take 400 mg now.

Thank you sugarmama! I will try that the next time I have any issues. I've pretty much got the drop and swallow down to a science now

Another question--I typically take it at night. Is that the best time?

Thisis the one I take. It is slow-release, and I take it morning and night. It is magnesium malate, with B9, B6, and B12 to help increase the absorption and bioavailibility of the magnesium. It was recommended to me by my massage therapist, who had gotten the recommendation from her accupuncturist, but my PCP MD heartily approved it.

I forgot to add that it says to drink it dissolved in warm water, I prefer room temperature water. Otherwise to me it taste like theraflu which I hate.

I take mega food magnesium supplement. It's a whole food vitamin and supposedly it's more bio-available or something. I just take 1 every night and it has seemed to help with the regularity and my rest

I take the same one as scrapsuzy. I stay away from mag citrate since it causes bathroom issues. Mag oil and Epsom salt baths are good too.

I use Magnesium Citrate for sleep. I buy my vitamins either from iherb.com or amazon if it's cheaper. In the past I've used drugstore.com but still compare prices to amazon.
I'm addicted to taking vitamins, always buying something new and exotic then forgetting what it's for. Case in point I recently bought Solgar Oceanic Silica from red algae, it's supposed to help my body build collagen so I have better nails. Previously I had no problems making deposits in the toilet, to me being regular was every few days (twice a week). Well when I started taking this I was making a deposit daily, sometimes twice a day. It was just too much for me especially since it only wants to happen at work lol, so I stopped. I have no interest in taking a dump daily. lol I googled this and apparently this is a side effect of it so it might be a good option for you.

I have similar issues of only going every four days or so but want to increase that. I don't think it is healthy to have the waste sitting in your body for long periods of time. I also have quite a few vitamins and don't know exactly what each is for. And don't always remember to take them. But I have been very consistent with the magnesium.

It doesn't bother me, I think everyone just goes at different intervals. I wouldn't call myself constipated or anything because if I eat an abnormally large meal, there's no hold up, it will exit very soon. I've had the same usual pattern my whole life, so I think it's normal for me. Although I couldn't even tell you exactly how often I go because I don't pay any attention to it. But when it became daily it became problematic/nuisance. I just know that I can lose weight easily when I apply myself, so I feel my body processes things just fine. I have a naturally high fiber diet.

My 12 year old daughter takes senna (8.6 mg) 2 times a day for chronic constipation (morning and night). Her Dr. said that he would be willing to go up to 3 per day before trying a different medication (she has a serious problem, lol). Of course, I would not recommend the normal person to take it at this dosage or for long periods of time without a Doctor recommendation , but just wanted to let you know that a child takes a pretty hefty dose and does just fine. She gets it as a prescription because our insurance pays, but the same dose (8.6 mg) is sold over the counter.

I found some packets of natural calm at my local grocery store and like it. I notice that there are some versions of magnesium that also include calcium and/or zinc. Should I be taking all of those or just the magnesium? There is a natural calm that has calcium as well but I am not sure if I need that?

I agree you need to take more to see an effect, at least initially. I was told it's better absorbed when taken at night, so that's when I take mine. I take 500 mg. by Nature's Bounty (magnesium oxide). It's not a small pill, but it is coated and goes down easily. It has helped decrease the amount and severity of my migraines.

I take a magnesium supplement that was prescribed to me by my Integrative Medicine doctor to help prevent my migraines. It's from "Designs from Health" and it's called "NeuroMag". It has 144 mg. of Magnesium L. Threonate in it and I take 3 pills a day which equal 432 mg. per day. You can order this online. It does work well for me.
I used to have constipation, but since I switched to a whole foods, plant based diet that is no longer the case. Fiber is lacking in the typical American diet. This diet includes whole grains, so I now eat pasta that is whole wheat (I got used to it and now prefer it) brown rice and whole grain bread. I eat a lot of vegetables and fruits and that provides some fiber along with oatmeal. I'm regular as clockwork now. Maybe switch some of your foods to whole grains and see if that helps?
Debbie in MD.

I still have issues with constipation. I do think that it has been better since starting the natural calm on Sunday, though.

I'm glad the magnesium is helping. Have you been working with a doctor about this? I see an Integrative Medicine doctor who prescribes my supplements. They are doctors who practices traditional medicine mixed with holistic medicine. Mine is a board certified internist, but has an open mind and is so sought after he has patients come in from over an hour away. I don't know if that would help you, but it might be better than working with a traditional doctor. I wish the best for you. Health problems truly suck, don't they? Debbie in MD.

I brought it up again in March when I had my annual exam. Told my dr that I generally eat 5-9 servings of veggies a day and have tried other things such as adding fiber supplements (I use fiber smart), probiotics, digestive enzymes, magnesium, etc. I have always had the problem of only "Making a deposit" (as was discussed earlier, lol) a few times a week but generally I didn't feel bad in between, only on the day of. Now I feel more miserable, I think because of the fiber. I have been trying to cut down on carbs/grains but have not cut them out completely by any means. I am close to trying an elimination diet, although I do have to say that I have gone each day since starting the new magnesium (didn't have that result with my previous magnesium pill). The doctor just told me to get even more fiber and I was "guaranteed" to have one to two BM's a day. I don't think he believed me (or didn't listen) when I said what I was eating. He said I could use the senna tea every other day or so but that it would eventually stop working. I don't want to have even more problems so I have been trying to limit it. I listen to quite a few podcasts with various doctors (holistic or traditional, but they all have functional medicine stance) but am not sure if there are any here. Does your insurance cover your provider birukitty?
