We have hundreds, well probably thousands of books. I would love to have the space back that they are occupying. Does anyone know of a service or organization that you can send you books to that will give you the ebook version in exchange? I do reread books and so I have a hard time getting rid of them, but if I could have an e-copy that would make it so much easier!

I think that would qualify as copywrite infringement. It's not like when you have your own photos or home movies converted to digital. But I'm no expert!

I think the OP is looking to trade a book for an e-book. I don't see any copyright infringement for a trading books.

You're never going to get a one to one trade, but you could sell your paper books online, Amazon being one place where it's quite easy to do so. then you could purchase the ebook version with the procedes. But first check to see if the books are already free -- depending on the type of book you like, there are often sources for legal free ebooks, though the formatting is sometimes less than optimal. If you're not already familiar with Project Guttenburg, that might be of interest to you.
My own approach is to keep some paper books, because I do like the look of a well loved book shelf. Some books I purchase as ebooks, some I borrow from the library as an ebook, and the surpluss of paper books I own I either donate or plan to curate a Little Free Library. If only I had woodworking skills, I'd have that thing built and installed already. As it is, I have friends who say they'll work with me on making one when they have time. . .

If you purchased any books from Amazon, look into their Kindle Match Book program. They have free/discounted e-books available for some books purchased on Amazon. I used to use the match book program often for textbooks.
