Now, I'm sure many of you will be thinking 'Duh! I could have told you that a long time ago.', but I'm hoping that my delayed light bulb going off will help at least one of you, lol. It normally takes me a pretty long time to plan a page. Between deciding on the right sketch to matching the cardstock & patterned papers to choosing embellishments & titles, it can be an exhausting & time consuming (although quite enjoyable) task. Right now, I am planning layouts from our Hawaii trip and I am blowing right through them. I've been wondering why and then it hit me. I'm not taking as long to make my decisions because this was a once in a lifetime trip and I want every page to be special, so I'm not haggling in my mind over whether or not to use something. If I like it, it's going on the page. No wondering whether or not there's a more 'special' layout in the distant future. This IS the special layout! That's why I'm getting so much done! I'm not wasting my time w/silly decisions. So if I just treat every layout like it's the layout, I'll be so much more productive. Then I won't feel so far behind and I will enjoy my beloved hobby that much more. I can't believe this didn't occur to me years ago. <sigh> Hopefully some of you who struggle w/the same issues I do will benefit from my aha moment.

Sometimes I think my problem is the opposite of yours. When I have a page I want to be "special", I argue with myself about everything. But when I get into the groove, I tend to just "grab and go". Helps to have a lot of pages with similar themes. Then everything I look at--even scraps from the last ones--will work on the page I'm on now. For me, the key is to focus on the story I am telling, rather than the products, or the process, I am using. Glad you have found YOUR key, tiffanytwisted !

You are so right!! I just had this problem last night with some pictures from a few years ago that I deemed weren't good enough for the new paper that I had bought so I was dig dig digging thru my crap to find something suitable... I need to let go of that idea and just use the new stuff!!
Thanks! Definite light bulb moment for me as well!!

I'm a grab and go on my everyday pages. If it fits the story, use it. But those special stories, I totally wonder if there is better paper, embellishments, etc. out there or coming out soon or if I'll do it justice. But happy you found your aha, Tiffany.

I'm the opposite in that I use my best stuff first in case I decide never to make another page. LOL I treat each page like my last and use my newest and best stuff. I've never actually completely 'killed a kit' cuz there's always something newer and better to use!

Me, too. And if it turns out to be not as special as I like, I redo it! But that doesn't happen often.

What gets me every time is the placement of the photos. That is why I have lots of pages saved by number of pictures. That's what gets me going. I also gave up on doing a clever page title for every single page. It's usually obvious what's going on because I'm more of an event scrapper.

Glad you have found YOUR key, tiffanytwisted ! Because my taste and style is pretty consistent I make it habit of putting all my leftovers from layouts done in a weekend (I do two scrapbook weekends a year) into a basket. This is scraps, leftover embellishments or unused embellishments from the kits I premake. When I go to make the next batch of kits I use these leftovers to start my kits with then add new stuff to round out the kits.

I only have a small stash so I like to look through everything in case I have something better already in my stash but if the new shiny pretty special thing is the best match for my project it's the one that gets used.

Tiffany, your new motto should be, "Live every day as if it's your last and scrapbook every story as if it's your last." LOL!
I recently gave myself permission to only use my newest product and I love everything I make now way more!!!! I don't know where some of us got the "save this for a special layout" mentality but I'm kicking myself over how long I did that.

I don't know where some of us got the "save this for a special layout" mentality but I'm kicking myself over how long I did that. You are so right! I have done this with every hobby- save the pretty bead for the perfect necklace, the right fabric until I find a pattern. It's time to make it stop. Oddly enough good China can be used on any day, for any meal.

Mostly because I don't often have the time to scrap unless I'm at a store or at a retreat. So any page I make could very well be the last page I make-- for at least a number of months, anyway!

Previously I would save my favorite supplies. But now I only get the chance to shop once a year for supplies. (We go back to the US for a couple weeks each summer) I'm trying my best now to use up as much of my stash as possible!

Does every page have to have a title?? No! I realized I was getting hung up on titles.

I think it's great when we have these little epiphanies and "aha!" moments. I've had a few and wish that I wasn't always overthinking things so that I didn't NEED to have those moments.

Good thinking! I try to keep this in my mind at all times because if I don't love the photo/story it just doesn't get scrapped. And I don't find myself loving, or sometimes even liking, pages that I force myself to use items because I have them lying around...you know what I mean...excess stuff from kits maybe, so I can say i killed it...You have to use it while you love it, and if it is in your books you can still look at it all the time! Recently, I had a moment similar to yours, when I was scrapping a SUPER special photo, because it is probably the only photo i have of myself and my father when I was a baby/small child. The ONLY one...and it is tiny. So I let myself use ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, even the fancy china as anonrefugee said! I used my only beautiful piece of an October Afternoon paper, almost an entire sheet of fancy vellum, the last of some pretty chipboard I was hoarding, some super adorable puffy stickers. Lots and lots of pricey and pretty embellishments. And guess what..I LOVE this page so much! So, I agree with you OP...I totally agree with you. Here is the page I made... Please share a photo of a layout or two you made from your trip tiffanytwisted!

I had to giggle a bit at myself for this. I have an older line called Snorkel that I have used on maybe four or five other layouts. I purchased two packages and extra paper because I loved it. I have some left that I have been hoarding for the perfect layout. We went to Mexico last month and I have amazing pictures that my son took on his Go Pro and a professional took that was with us. The sea turtles and sting rays were everywhere. I have finally given myself permission to use the paper for the layout. It is the perfect paper. Wy do I do this? I know I will still have more paper, but the struggle is real.

I stopped hoarding the good stuff a long time ago and use everything and anything that will work on a layout. Why? Because when I was looking through my stash much later, something I thought was "great" turned out to be not all that and I sat back and wondered why I was holding onto it in the first place! I've spent a great deal of time redoing layouts that I hate because I used stuff I didn't absolutely love, and as it turned out, the redone layouts are much better than the original because I don't hold back any supplies! If it works, it gets used. And the best part about using those things is that the pages are much nicer to me because that one piece of patterned paper I thought I couldn't part with sure looks better on a layout than stuffed somewhere in my paper stash! Besides, gives me more opportunities to buy more stuff I love! As for getting pages done quickly, I find the best way for me to design a layout is to start in Photoshop Elements or the Silhouette studio software. Things come together faster for me that way because it's easier to recolour elements or paper or whatever and then print them off.

I find I am more creative when I limit my supplies. That prevents the overwhelming "too many things to choose from" which turns into "I can't decide which one". I also use my newest supplies if they work for my project. Typically I make a kit from my stash and that's what I use.

So happy for you that you discovered this secret. I love using my new stuff. I only save supplies if I have a specific plan for them. I figure there will always be something new and shiny down the road so I might as well use the current new and shiny now. Love the concept that every page might be your last. It's kind of sobering in a way. Makes you really want to make sure that you get your stories down on the page, doesn't it? Then everything I look at--even scraps from the last ones--will work on the page I'm on now. I do this all the time when I'm working with a kit or a collection. It makes it so easy to crank out some pages. I also like that I feel as if I'm really using something up. I love to kill a kit.
