It's heading towards 2am here. I can't sleep so I'm messing around on the internet trying to distract myself. So here's my question.... If you had 50 million dollars free and clear, no strings attached except that you can neither use it to pay bills nor can you simply invest it, what would you do? I doubt this would add up to $50 million (or maybe it would?), but it's a start....I'd: ~Buy a beautiful atelier in the Marais. ~Buy or build the perfect little beach cottage (not sure which beach yet). ~Buy a fully restored 1970 convertible Chevelle. Take a months long Route 66 road trip with my husband. ~Take a year long cruise around the world. ~Take my dream vacation: African photo safari. ~Take my BFF to Paris. Treat her to a $10K shopping spree at Louboutin (her dream but she will never afford them). ~Pay off the mortgage of my immediate family and closest friends (hey, they're not my bills lol) ~Give each of my siblings money, lots and lots of money. ~Send my mum flowers once a week for the rest of her life. ~Have a year of fun with my husband...we just do whatever fun thing we want such as concerts, movies etc whatever cause hey we have the money. lol ~Buy my mum the little place she wants in Costa Rica. ~Buy the awesome condo in Chicago (?) we spoke of here. Turn it into Refupeas HQ. Host scrap retreats. Set up a management group and use it for visiting peas...anything pea related. ~Take my God-kids on a Lego shopping spree. ~Give each of my friends a sum of money, not to be disclosed to anyone as they'd all be different, that they could pay off bills and have some fun. ~Take photography classes. ~Spend a week in Cancun with my sister. I'm thinking 50 million goes pretty dang far in my fantasy. lol

Even in my wildest dreams I don't think I could spend $50 million. Everything I can think of that I'd want to do would total maybe $5 million.
-New house -Buy truck and horse trailer -Pay off my mom's house -Buy land and open an animal sanctuary. -Visit England, Hawaii and Alaska. -New camera lenses -Immediate retirement, I am not working with $50 million in the bank -Establish scholarship for local kids based on work ethic, entrepreneurial ideas.

$1 million to our church to purchase property around it and build a new facility. $1 million for the education and future of a young girl we have been involved with. $1 million for DH's nephew for education and future. $1 million to my niece to educate her sons and for housing. $1 million to a trust to provide housing and other things for a disabled friend.
Purchase a lake house. Purchase a "castle" back home and provide housing for my BF's family, DH's sister, and BmaleF on the property. (Or build our own compound.) Helicopter and lessons for DH. Vehicles for DH sister, my niece and her husband. Possibly buy a different house here. Hire people to manage our 3 households. Travel....travel...travel. US, Europe, Australia. Then branch out to other areas. Maybe even get a yacht to do some of the traveling. Personal trainers for DH & I. And a cook. Golf lessons with some golfing muckity muck for DH and self. And for DH's golf buddy who is a friend of mine. Educational enrichments for my young friend. Funding for animal rescues. Or an endowment. Dental care for me.
That is off the top of my head. (Can you tell I have given this some thought in the past?)
ETA: Eliminate these whiskers once and for all. Adopt siblings. Music lessons for DH and I and a new piano.

Move far away to live with family in a different part of the world. We want to do this really badly, but it's just... ya know... with work commitments and stuff, it's just not realistic right now. But with $50 million I guess work commitments won't be an issue Over the top Disney vacation here too! I have several young kids and teenagers in my family that would love that! And I would treat them all to that experience! I would definitely buy a nice house, but not go over the top. The best thing about having that amount of money would definitely be that I would have the freedom to indulge in hobbies like scrapbooking, and explore new things. I would love to have the time to learn new things. Take classes and learn first aid, flower arranging, maybe do a Bachelor's in linguistics part-time.... But being able to give my kids every opportunity and every experience money can buy is the best gift of all! Like the Disney vacation. And travelling somewhere new and exciting several times a year. One of the experiences I would REALLY like to have is to take a week off at the end of October, rent a house in a normal neighbourhood in the US and have an 'American' Halloween. We celebrate Halloween somewhat over here, but we don't go full American. And I would love to experience that! Cause you gotta have goals..... Ah, yes...I totally have a few tickets for next weeks draw! Wish me luck! And good luck to all of my fellow Peas!

Travel. And more travel. There are so many places I've read about I'd like to see.
Help I'll family members so they don't have to work.
Buy a big but simple beach house with enough rooms for my kids and grandkids to all be able to visit at once.
Hire a housekeeper.
Take the grandkids and their parents to Disneyland.
Take a trip with my dad of his choosing.
Honestly, I'd have a very very hard time spending that money. My needs are simple. I would want to hang on to it so I could take care of anything that came up in the future.

justkat, I love the idea of Pea Central in Chicago! Can we have a travel fund too for Peas wanting to visit from overseas? I actually did a layout about six or seven years ago about what I would do if I won £35 million (approx $52million) A local woman had won this much on the National Lottery, and there were many, many conversations about how we all would spend it. I came across the layout quite recently and laughed as one of the things I had listed was 'have four Labradoodles'. Now that I have one, I'm not sure I could deal with four! Anyway, my list is: Buy my upstairs neighbour's house, and convert both flats into one beautiful house. New cars for me and the kids (and driving lessons for them both first!) Buy a house in Pass-a-Grille at St Pete Beach Buy a house in Edinburgh Give money to various friends to pay off mortgages, etc Fund a music therapist at the Adolescent Psychiatric Unit where my DD was treated Donate to some local organisations to ensure their survival Set up a scholarship fund for local students who achieve 'against the odds', so that they can take up places at non-local universities BuyDD a big bundle of rabbits to cuddle - and employ someone to clean them out! Travel across the US in an RV, visiting lots of Peas as I go. But don't worry, I won't park it in your drive, I won't expect you to wait on me, and I won't outstay my welcome. Travel. Anywhere and everywhere that takes my fancy. Starting with a few weeks in Walt Disney World, staying Concierge level at the Beach Club. Sigh.

DH and I dream about this all the time - we would hire an architect and build a big house in a beautiful mountain/lakeside location, with all sort of entertainment built in (theater room, Christmas room, full gym, bakery, multiple hobby rooms) and then hire a staff to run it and never leave, except to travel first class!

I think we'd both retire for sure!
But the list:
New vehicles Pay for all three kids' education (they are currently paying it themselves) Orlando vacation property Cottage on Georgian Bay near my brother's boat marina See my Mom & inlaws comfortable for their remaining years Over the top vacations - Disney for sure, Europe, take the kids to see where DH came from in Scotland & visit his family there Pay to have somebody finish our basement, and reno our bathroom, totally re-do the front of the house. Then probably sell the house and get something with some property around it
I'm sure there is more that I can't think of....but it sure is fun to dream!

I would put at least 30 million in a charitable trust. I think it would be wonderful to spend my time finding good causes to support.
I'd buy a home at the beach we prefer. I have a dream condo I ride by on my bicycle when we are there and wish I had the 2 or 3 million I'm guessing one of those condo's costs.
The rest would be invested in very secure funds so I never have to worry about what the stock market is doing again. I'd up my lifestyle slightly but not that much. Maintaining that expensive condo isn't going to be cheap but to live in luxury steps from the ocean. Ah, heaven!
There are a few generous gifts I would make to those closest to me.

And just in case this is a "I'll share a bit with all who respond type message" (ugghhhh don't you just hate those on Facebook lol) I'll respond with my list: ~Quit jobs ~Share, share, share ~Feel a lot more secure about life and such (sick son) so I'd feel like we could safely travel the world. ~Donate directly to causes that we feel strongly about ~Become a snowbird and move, part time, to Maui Oh I could go on and on and on but mainly help people and travel.

We'd be doing some serious traveling and doing awesome experiences. New clothes for all! All the house repairs and updates would be made. Idk, I don't think I could spend 50 million on frivolous stuff. I honestly love the things in my life right now, so I really wouldn't be looking to trade up.

Pay off this place and keep for kids to build homes on the land in their future. Put aside money for those future homes. (do not tell kids of this yet so they keep on keeping on) Pay off DD19 college for now and the next 3 years and graduate school. Put $ aside for DS16 for his college education.
Buy a new but modest lakeside house. Here or in Door Co. Oh, wait, both! I have 50 million dollars!
Put aside an "I'm old and need assisted living" fund so I don't end up at someone else's mercy.
Set aside a slush fund to live off (financial adviser?) and then figure out what to use the rest for to better others lives. (Charities that $ actually gets to and do best for people of need.)

I have a plan for what I would give all my family and DH's should we ever win a lottery. After that, a log cabin in Idaho, a gorgeous apartment on Newbury St in Boston and a small private plane. Actually, I may be in debt after all that!!

-Renovate my house. -Hire someone to take care of the grounds so dh wouldn't have to anymore. -I would buy a small apartment in Manhattan. Doesn't matter much where, just a nice little place to stay overnight when we want to after a show (and the 50 mill would buy plenty of Bway and dance performance tickets!) or when dd is dancing in NYC. -I know it says no investments, but I would fully fund college funds for dd and my nieces and nephew. -An air threading serger and a coverstitch machine -a full Nikon dSLR, a few more lenses some more lights, and studio equipment -a scholarship foundation for fabulous kids who are not the tippy top students, but the "also rans" who have financial needs not really being met. Would also like to quietly fund the education of few people I work with.

I would spend all 50 million on the worst inner city schools in the public school system. I would buy the best books, computers and supplies. I'd also paint and fix all the classrooms...of course I'd need a lot more than 50 million to do what I'd like to do.

Hmmmm. I would retire with my DH and move to the beach. Probably somewhere in Haiti.
Our family funds clean water wells in Uganda as a memorial for our daughter, so I would want to buy more and allow more to have clean water for drinking.
Edited to add: I do not want more children - but I would like to pay for people who would love to adopt but cannot afford to. So I would give away the money so good people can adopt.

I would buy my friend who's going through a messy divorce a house. She is devastated that she's having to pull her kids out of their current school because she can't afford to live in the district on just her income. I would pay off my other friend's student loans. I would fully fund my local NPR station. (no more pledge drives ever!) I would donate a ton of money for breast cancer research at UAB I would buy my dream house, but it's a relative bargain at 1.5 million I would set up a scholarship program at the high school where I teach. And that would probably do it! Dang, 50 million goes fast!

I'd have to give about $40million away - funding clean water, education, social empowerment etc in Africa and South Asia. Possibly an educational trust in New Zealand - there aren't a lot of options here for university scholarships.
Then I'd buy a house for my brother and his family and retire - with a celebratory round the world trip.

MOVE! -Get a divorce -Keep it a secret! I can think of a few people who would try to get as much as possible from me. -Put my son in ABA therapy for as many hours as he can handle. -Pay off debt. -Buy a bigger house, but not massive. A home that would work long term for my kids. I would need to budget for the lawn guy, housekeeper, cook,... -Go on a private jet and vacation somewhere with my family. -Put money in trusts for my 3 kids. -Hire someone who is able to watch my son on occasion.
I'd still be the full time caregiver for my kids so it's hard to even pretend what I would do with that much money. I guess my new home would have all new furniture and an amazing home theater room, my own office/craft room, beautiful built ins, and my backyard would be very private and safe. It would probably be a brand new build and because I would be SO rich I'd bring in fully mature trees for the landscaping.
