I had MOHS surgery a month ago on my nose to remove basal cell skin cancer. They had to remove a lot more than expected due to the roots. The actual hole in my nose ended up about 3times larger than the visible cancerous tissue. They did an amazing job covering that hole without having to do a skin graft but I am left with a large horseshoe shaped scar than runs down one side, across the tip of my nose and up the other side almost to the corner of my eye.
It it is healing very well but I was wondering if any of you had good results with any creams/oils etc on scars. I am supposed to massage it twice a day now to help breakdown the scar tissue under the surface. My instructions say I can use any moisturizer but NOT vitamin E creams. I thought vitamin E creams were good for healing scars?
Of course I forgot to ask the surgeon when she came for a look after I got my stitches out. I go back in June for a follow up but that's still a bit far away so I thought I would ask the all knowing refupeas.

When my Mum had MOHs surgery (I'm in the UK) they told her to use Vaseline jelly. That was in November and you can hardly see the scar now

Bio Oil is very good. Have used it on several scars and they faded very quickly. My sister had a very large scar on her nose from skin cancer surgery and she used it too.

My mom had the same thing you did a couple of years ago. You can barely see anything now, and she did not use anything.

Call the surgeon's office and ask the nurse.

nitad, The most important thing is to massage the area. This in itself will help so much. Also make sure you limit your sun exposure, not just for the obvious reason but scar tissue and sun isn't a good mix. I'm sure your doctor has told you this already. The best thing you can do is call the doctor's office and speak with a nurse. Ask them any questions you may have. It's why they're there and, as a physician, it's something I wish more patients would do. Use the resources available to you and advocate for yourself. I'm not going to recommend a particular product because I am a physician and this is the internet etc. Sorry. But please whatever you decide, read labels and directions carefully. The best thing, a month out, that you can do is simply massage the scar and keep it moisturized.

Last Friday I had surgery on my neck and I now look like Frankenstein. My doctor told me to use Mederma. No clue how effective it is, but that's what I'm trying.

I've used Mederma with good results. My OB's office gave me a tube when I went in to have my staples removed. My second c-section scar healed much nicer than the first. I didn't use anything on the first.

One surgeon suggested Mederma. It was on my foot and I had great results.
I had facial surgery done, and that surgeon recommended Aquafor. I have no scar. The incision was between the brow and eyelid.
I noticed Aquafor is mostly petroleum jelly (per the ingredients label).

I have a scar from a fusion that looks like someone slit my throat. I used vit E cream on it and sunscreen. After 10 months it is almost invisible. My dr recommended the Vit e.

Interesting, I might buy Vitamin E. Last Friday I basically had my throat slit and now have a close to 4 inch scar which I can't hide. Thanks!

Be sure to use sunscreen on it once it heals or it will burn or tan faster. I wore a lightweight scarf to protect it for the few months. I hope you are healing and feeling better.

Thanks for all the info everyone. So many people here and elsewhere swear by vitamin E so I don't really understand why my instructions specifically say not to use it. Colour me confused. However, I am going to follow it to the letter. It really sounds like keeping it moisturized and doing the massage are the two main things so I am going to continue with that. I think I'll try good old Vaseline like PascoePea's mom did...I have that in the cupboard already! I sure hope everyone dealing with this issue heals up quickly and invisibly!
take care
