I live in a NOT with it little burb. Yesterday I was visiting my 2 oldest kiddos in their little college town. I went to Kroger with the intent of buying them groceries and did some shopping for myself. I found some flat iron steaks on sale. A really great sale! I wish I had a reason to go to Kroger about 50 miles away and buy some more but I can't. I need to check on when the sale ends. Maybe I will get lucky and it won't be until Friday when I could possibly swing it.
ANYWAY, this is the point of the thread. How do you cook your flat iron? I have not purchased them before so I don't know if this is the way it is supposed to look but it looks more like a flat roast. I guess, thus the name? I keeping picturing a steak. Or something more like flank steak which we love but the price of beef is keeping it out of my reach right now.
I have found a couple of simple things on the 'net. I found one that has a Cuban style marinade. If I had all of the ingredients this would be the one. I don't have oranges but I do have orange juice. Could I just use that? Another just sprinkles Montreal Steak Seasoning and sears in it a cast iron skillet.
Give me some ideas on this? There is only so much searching one can do on the web. I want some real life, tried and tested good stuff. TIA

Oh how I miss Kroger and flat iron steaks. (CBS Sunday Morning had a story today that included Kroger partnering with Hugh Jackman and free trade coffee.)
We always grilled our flat irons like any other steak. We did marinate them in Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. They were always tender and delicious! Enjoy!!

I salt each side then cook 5-7 minutes each side in a hot cast iron skillet. Then, I cut slices at an angle. Sometimes, there is a piece of grizzle running through the middle, but for the most part, they are a good cut that is easy to prepare.
I have been disappointed at our Kroger lately - they are cutting them much thicker than they used to, so each package is twice as large as it used to be. I used to get a package for about $6 that would easily feed the two of us.

We love flat iron steak too. I often marinade it. I have used something similar to that Cuban marinade that you mention. I think mine did just use orange juice. Otherwise I do some simple spices and grill it.
