I haven't been to NYC since 2002. While there, there was a subway strike and (I believe) a garbage strike, let alone it was the summer after 9/11. We were there with son's baseball team and getting around was a disaster.
I am headed there this weekend to see a play with dd, my sil and my sister. We will meet up with my niece who lives there. We are going to see a play and have most of the day on Saturday and until about 2 on Sunday to walk around. My dd wants to go to Central Park, my sister wants to go to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty (which I've been to and don't mind going again). I thought we would go to Belvedere Castle in Central Park.
What else should we attempt to see? I don't care to see the Empire State Building.
And on top of trying to make this a nice weekend, ds's gf (who he met through his cousin) and also lives in NY was supposed to go with us to sightsee and see the play. DS broke up with her on Thursday saying that the long distance just wasn't working. Ugh. I'm going to message her today and hopefully she will still join us for at least the play. I really liked this young women and she is devastated. I have to reach out.

What show are you seeing?
Here's my warning about Ellis Island and Lady Liberty - the lines are HUGE. It will take a huge chunk of time out of your weekend. Either get there super early or just take the Staten Island Ferry near them and enjoy the view.
Sounds like it will be a nice weekend. We'll be in too for my daughter's accepted students day at NYU. Can't wait!

Since I'm still in the middle of chemo, my stamina isn't up to par so we're doing a bus tour where you can get on and off when you like. That will hit all the high points we want to see. And I'm meeting up with some friends one of the days we'll be there. I'm hoping they suggest someplace awesome and not touristy. We're staying through Monday because we have tickets to Hamilton which is really the reason we're going. Central Park is a bucket list thing for me also so we're probably going to spend time there Saturday. I hope the weather cooperates. And we have collectively decided the Staten Island Ferry will be enough for us as far as Statue of Liberty goes.

Totally agree about Ellis/Liberty. Since you're there for a short time it would take almost a whole day - when you could see so many other things in Manhattan. Chelsea Market is fantastic, and gets you right to the High Line...so, so much to do! What show are you seeing?
As cheesy as the bus tour is, it's an excellent way to get many sights in without exhausting yourselves. I took one with a visiting friend a year after living there and we had an absolute blast, even in the rain.
Compwalla - how exciting that you have tickets!! I have resigned to waiting for the Chicago opening to go, but I'm dying to see Lin-Manuel. Sad that Jonathan Groff just left, but the new king is adorable too.

The new king - Rory O'Malley - is fab. We saw him with the original cast of "Book of Mormon" and he'll be so good as King George.

Since I live to eat, I'll give you this one piece of advice---if you make it to the Upper West Side while there, stop at Levain Bakery (W. 74th) for a cookie.

AND...I found out we can get discount tickets for the bus tour at the USO in Times Square. We are staying 10 minutes from Times Square (by bus) so we will be able to get our tickets 35% off without having to go to the navy base on Staten Island. I'm really thrilled about that.

We're a military family, too, and got free admission for the whole family to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Made a short visit very worth while. Also, I've heard that the USO sometimes has show tickets. I'll be checking into that when I visit in June.

No advice, I just want to wish you and Compwalla a great time with, hopefully, nice weather.
Last week, my daughter saw "Sense and Sensibility" off-Broadway at the Gym at Judson (by NYU) and, being a huge Austen fan, she wants to see it again soon.

I went on a girls trip with my bff in December. Some of the things we did:
American History Museum The Met The Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art Grand Central Station 9-11 Menorial On Board Tour of the city (w/ Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island) Chelsea Market Rockefeller Center Circle Line Tour Tenement Museum Tour Shopping at Macy's and Century 21
We saw Something Rotten (totally loved this) and Gentkeman's Guide to Love and Murder (which we liked, but Rotten was better)
We ate at: Rubriosa Marseille (eh) Red Eye Grill Crispo Distilled (my favorite...so good) Boqueria Juniors for cheesecake Big Gay for ice cream Sprinkles for cupcakes (eh) The food court at Brookfield Plaza (I eat here often as my office is in the same building, lots of great choices)

Friday nights are free at MOMA next to Rockefeller. I was just there this past weekend, and it was a fabulous stop for us. It was crowded, but it was great to see Van Gogh (Starry Night!), Picasso, Warhol, Degas, Matisse, Gaugin, Monet, etc. Definitely worth a trip. We also enjoyed the Museum of Natural History, especially the currently featured IMAX on the National Parks. Enjoy!

Either get there super early or just take the Staten Island Ferry near them and enjoy the view. Can't echo this enough. When I take people to Ellis Island and the Statue, I plan most of a day for it. It doesn't seem to even matter what time of year it is. If you are spending a week in NYC, I'd go ahead and take that time, other wise, do the Ferry or Circle Line.

We are seeing a new musical, Waitress. It stars Jessie Mueller, who won the Tony for Beautiful. We saw Beautiful in Chicago with her sister starring and we loved it. Waiting for Hamilton to go on sale to general public to get them here in Chicago. My dd worked at BIC for a few years and we enjoyed the perks of many free musicals.
If you are in the Chicago suburbs the musicals at the Aurora Playhouse are excellent! Next season doesn't looks as good, but this season we saw A Christmas Story, Hairspray and Oklahoma already. West Side Story in a few weeks. Very reasonable -only $30 a play and I after seeing over 40 musicals downtown I can honestly say that they are up to par with many we have seen and better than quite a few.

We are seeing Waitress. I bought the CD and love the music. We were at Ellis Island and Lady in 2002 and obviously it wasn't crowded because of 9/11.

Awesome! I want to see Waitress. Hope you enjoy! You've gotten some good suggestions. I would also add a visit to Smorgasburg (go early) and a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Have a fab time. Another recommendation for the High Line. If you're into museums/galleries either the Met or MOMA.

Oh, great! I was at an event in November and Jessie Mueller sang "She Used to Be Mine" and it was fabulous. I'm sure it'll be great!
