I've just discovered this and I love it. I just wish I had the courage to do it. oil slick hair
Has anyone tried it? Experience? Got photos?

I absolutely love it! If my hair was dark I'd totally do it! Mine is mouse brown, I don't think it would look good.

I've never heard of it until now but it's cool! I actually probably have the perfect hair for it, but it's not really "me" I don't think.

It's pretty cool, but I wonder what it REALLY takes to do on dark hair? Because it's not like you can just put a lighter color over dark, dark brown.
And for the love of all that is holy, can someone PLEASE tell hair stylists to quit using that mirror vision photo effect. It's weird and so very overdone.

My dd had it done. She has medium brown hair and had the sections where the color was applied bleached first. I posted photos back when she had it done. I would re-link, but I am on my phone and challenged with cut/paste/search on my phone. I'll try and do it later when I am on my laptop.

After cmpeter posted pictures of her daughter's hair, I went looking for inspiration and showed them to my hairdresser. That was the day I had it done. Since then, it's mostly faded with a few spots of teal still holding strong. I'm going back on Thursday to refresh it and add more color. I'm doing the pinwheel color next with the same colors. pinwheel hair I figure the next time I get bored with my hair, I might go more black and purples.

Ooh pin wheel hair too - that's pretty!
Yes, I'm not sure whether my hair is dark enough either. It's a kind of old chestnut colour. I don't really want the bleaching, and I'm happy for it to fade, which is why I thought the oil slick effect might work.
Hmm... decisions, decisions.

Your title is misleading! My first thought was "who'd want oily hair?" lol

My natural color is what you see, brown. Not really dark. She did bleach my hair.

I love it. But the maintenance puts me off. I had pink and purple stripes put in my hair and they faded so quickly. Everytime I washed my hair you could watch the colour rush down the plug hole. Although blue does last longer and fades into green. So maybe oil slick effect lasts better yhan unicorn hair.

Thanks for the link Annie!
surprisingly, her color is lasting a lot longer than I thought it would. She has been good about only washing with cold water (the first couple weeks) and luke warm since then. She's using Pureology shampoo for color treated hair. She's only shampooing 2 times a week and will sometimes use a dry shampoo in between, but not often.
She'll be home from school in an hour...I get an update picture to show.

Here is an updated photo taken today...there has been some fading and quite a bit of grow out (her hair grows super fast). Most of the red is gone, but the blues, purples and teal are going strong. By comparison, here is her hair on the day she had it colored (Feb 13)

That's exactly what I thought! Yeah, sorry about that, but that's what it's called! Me,too! My hair gets greasy so fast, that I've considering joining OPEC. When I read the title, I felt a little surge of hope that maybe I could finally be "in" with a fashion trend. Buggers!

I have really good luck with directions dyes. they do bleed on towels and pillowcases when wet, but they are so very vivid that it's worth it to have some scrap linens. but if you want a pink that will never leave you.. like, legit it's there for a long long time, use special effect's atomic pink. I last dyed my hair pink in December and the pink is still there, making purples in my blue. I've bleached once and colored blue about 4 times, it makes such a pretty fade in between.
check out www.haircrazy.com/ . THE best website for alternative color info and inspiration, IMO.

In my opinion, this kind of hair color only looks good when one spends a great deal of time and money achieving the look.

In my opinion, this kind of hair color only looks good when one spends a great deal of time and money achieving the look. You're so right. There are some hot ass messes walking around. Maintenance is super important, but it doesn't have to be pricey. Gloves, a box of foil, a tube of color and a color brush and you can absolutely maintain it at home. My husband (who is a mechanic by trade) does my color. I only have a pro do bleach and haircuts but this is by far the least expensive color I've ever had. As long as your smart enough to put the color on the same color and don't slap it on like a slob kabob you're pretty good to go. It just deposits color so you can seriously leave it on for hours and you're not going to jack it up.
