I've been taking a low dose pravastatin (10 mg) for a couple years with no major issues. Some muscle pain, but nothing terrible. I had a Dr appointment a couple weeks ago and the Dr upped me to 20 mg, and also had me start taking CoQ10 for the muscle pain.
The last couple days have been awful. My legs especially hurt and feel very weak. It feels like I'm pushing through water to walk. It was hard to walk up the stairs this morning. Has anyone had something like this happen? If you've taken CoQ10 to help how long before it helped? I really think this dosage just doesn't agree with me.
I have placed a call to the Dr to have them call me back about maybe lowering it back to just 10 mg. I have been losing weight, and my cholesterol has improved, but still not as good as it should be, hence the higher dose, but I'm hoping if we just wait it out and I continue to lose the 10 mg would be enough.
Anyone have experience with this?

Yes. In fact, my husband did. We were at the hospital and ran into a friend of his who said...it's your statins. He had been on the verge of being admitted to a nursing home because he couldn't care for himself. He stopped the statins, and recovered completely. My husband stopped taking them immediately, and recovered. No more muscle pain. When he saw the doc, she admitted that it is a common problem, then put him on a different statin. Within a week, he couldn't taste food. He stopped taking the statins, but this time, his taste didn't come back. His doc decided not to put him back on a statin. He uses diet, and exercise to control his cholesterol now and is on no medication.

My MIL had permanent muscle damage from too high a dose of a statin (I don't remember which one.) She was on it for a long time, and a bad reaction between the statin and an antibiotic put her in ICU for many weeks.
Talk to your doctor sooner rather than later.

My DH. He stopped taking them when he couldn't walk our neighborhood with me. He's only 57 and 2.5 miles was agony for him. Now we're doing 3.25 including a big hill. no issues.

I'm new to the statins. Six months ago, after intense lab work, my doctor informed me that my cholesterol was too high. I was shocked. I told him that there was no way that I could eat any healthier than I had been. He told me that it was my genetics cholesterol, that he could see that the numbers that I could control were really good. He put me on 10mg of Pravachol and 100mg CoQ10 daily. I am going back next week for a follow up to recent blood work. I've had "some" muscle pain occasionally in my legs recently. I assumed it was something else, but maybe because of my new statins. I am really hoping that my numbers have gone down. As usual, the Peas are a major source of information and I am very grateful for that.

I never had muscle pain but I did develop acute drug-induced hepatitis. I no longer am allowed to take statins.

Add my DH to the list. His doctor eventually agreed to take him off them.

I have muscle soreness and fatigue. Some days are better than others, so I'm just dealing with it for now. I had no idea the problem was so common, and that the side effects could be so severe.

My Mom had trouble with Lipitor and had gotten to the point where she could hardly walk. I am on the Dash Diet to control my cholestrol and hope to never have to take statins. The dash Diet is great to help with high cholestrol, blood pressure, sugar and weight. It is working for me so far.

Yes! And with the exact same meds after the exact same dosage increase!
I've been off them for a couple months so of course my numbers went back up. I just picked up the generic version of lipitor and I'll be starting that....soon. I am concerned about the muscle pain coming back so I haven't been in any rush to start again..

Muscle pain when on statins always needs a trip to the doctor to check out. The muscle pain may be unrelated to the statin use - it could be post- viral for example, but this can be determined by a blood test. The sort of muscle pain caused by statins can lead to muscle damage that may not be reversible when the statins are stopped. Please take the symptom seriously.

Yep, my DH had severe muscle cramps caused by statins. Doc took him off the drugs and he recovered fully. Kinda pissed me off that the doc didn't give DH a warning about the muscle cramping side effects...it took some research and a buddy with whom he cycles to tell him that the statins were probably the cause of the pain.

Would anyone who has had muscle issues with statins care to elaborate. DH has other health issues, but has been taking statins, (Lipitor, 20mg) since mid-October. He can walk only short distances...he just feels like his legs are terribly fatigued and aren't going to hold him up...some pain, but more of a discomfort in calves. Some have indicated issues with walking but is it due to severe muscle cramps, DH doesn't have that, just a real sense of fatigue and heaviness.

She even got to where she fell a couple of times. She said her legs felt heavy and fatigued. Your DH should go talk to his doctor as soon as he can.

Yes. I am on 20 mg generic Lipitor and have muscle pain and a little weakness. I had horrible, really horrible calf cramps prior and take a high dose of COQ10. I want off the statin so bad but even losing weight, exercising, eating really well and taking supplements my cholesterol is really bad with out it. The Dr said it's genetic. I am thinking of taking my chances and stopping the statin. I hate it.

Once people stop the statins how long did you or your relative have until you saw some relief? If the damage wasn't permanent.
Will post shortly about why I am asking this but just had a minute.

I always have leg pain-today was just icing on the cake. I could barely walk to the bathroom, but so far I haven't correlated leg pain with Crestor. (I don't know what it is called but it is a statin, too). Everything I do makes my legs ache. It is awful.
I don't want to take it anymore. I take enough pills and I hate swallowing them. I hate it. So much!

This sounds like how mine started (I was on 40 mg Simvistatin, which was then reduced to 20 mg). I would have to force myself to walk even just the distance from my car to my work building. Then I started getting aching in my upper arms and back too. The doctor reduced me to 10 mg., but that didn't even help so we discontinued it and after about 6 months I am finally feeling better.

Are you taking any statin at all now? Or just trying to reduce with diet? I'm thinking I'm going to try harder with the diet and exercise, it's pretty miserable feeling like it's hard to walk

The doctor said since my HDL is still good, he is not worried about my 'overall' number being 225. I agree it is a horrible feeling when your legs feel like dead weights.

Lipitor gave me terrible leg pain. In my calves, as though I had been walking for hours. Switched to pravastatin and no problems since.

This is why I refuse to take statins!!
I have lowered mine by taking plant sterols. I use a product called CholestOff. It is hard to find in the stores, so I just order it through amazon. It works by blocking the absorption of the cholesterol in the digestive track. I can't find my exact numbers to share with you, but it lowered by bad numbers by about 40-50 points. I have had no side effects.

I'm so sorry you are experiencing this. I was terrified of statins when dh started taking them over ten years ago. he has not had any issues. However, I witnessed my MIL and my godfather both lose the use of their legs while taking statins. My godfather was so weak he thought he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. At 80 yo or so he told the doc to take the statins and jump in the lake... and he rebounded to robust health, running the seniors club at his church, taking care of the grounds, etc.
If I was feeling what you have described, I would run in the other direction from these drugs!

It's for this very reason that I will not take them. I'm in a battle with my GP to the point that I've switched GPs. The side effects are too widespread and too severe and since I've never had a heart attack or stroke, I'm not willing to take them without more in-depth testing that my old GP refused to do. I'm working with my current GP to lower it via dietary changes; I've always had higher than normal cholesterol but since going low-carb, it's really gone up. If it doesn't improve by my next lot of tests, she's going to refer me to a lipid specialist.
Both my parents are on statins. I'm convinced a lot of the problems that they are experiencing are due to the statins. :-(

This Happened to my brother. He had problems lifting even a gallon of milk. He also started getting a scaly rash on his elbows. He was worried about auto immune problems and then he started googling his old statin and a new cholesterol med. It turned out they should never be taken together.

Neither DH nor I can take pravastatin because of muscle pain and sleep issues. I take Crestor and have no problems at all. Its very expensive but your doctor can give you a coupon to reduce the price to just a few dollars.
