John Green's brother has a greyhound: And so do we: They are great dogs. If you're in the market, check and see if you have a rescue near you. And, unlike a lot of larger dogs that *must* have a huge yard, greyhounds do very well in apartments or houses with smaller yards because, in spite of the fact that they love to run, they are also wicked lazy and sleep most of the day like a cat, only requiring brief periods of exercise each day.

I would love a greyhound, but I have to wait for the old man to pass. Then I need to wait a couple of years. Then think about another dog. A greyhound is high up on the list, though!

I adopted a retired racer many years ago. She was a fantastic dog. Her racing name was Treetop Elsie. Miss her.

I have owned 3 in my lifetime, and fostered several others. Amazing dogs. More like cats than dogs, so if you like cats but aren't sure about a dog, check out greys.

I would looooove to have a Greyhound, too!! They look so sweet; I love the pic of yours, Virginia.
We were actually very seriously thinking about adopting a greyhound for a while, but decided we didn't have room enough at the time for a larger-size dog, so we got a Sheltie instead. Then over the course of the last 10 years we got a second Sheltie... then we got a third one... haha!!
Adopting a greyhound may still be in the cards for us someday, but not for a while at least, now. ( We definitely do gravitate towards the dog breeds with longer noses, though-- lol.) Besides having enough space inside the house for a larger dog to be comfortable, the other consideration for us with a greyhound would be making sure whatever dog we got was 'cat-safe' because we'll probably always have at least one cat.

They are big-ish but don't need as much room as you might think. They do really well in small apartments. And we also have cats. It took some time and patience (and a few well-placed smacks across the snout administered by an angry cat) for him to learn but he leaves the cats alone and we don't worry about him being around them. Some greyhounds never get there but most can if you give it time and attention.

While I don't have a full bred greyhound I have a 1/2 greyhound mutt. She's so sweet and silly. She loves to cuddle. And nap. This dog can nap like no other. She cracks us up because she zooms around the yard and leaps like a gazelle at full speed and then just collapses.

Ooooh, I want one! DH says he's leaving if I bring home another animal, though.

Ooooh, I want one! DH says he's leaving if I bring home another animal, though. Haha! I found a dog in Tucson last week, rescued from getting run over. I couldn't keep him since I don't live there, but I jokingly sent dh a selfie with the dog. He got mad, like actually mad thinking I was serious. We have 4 rescue pets right now. It's plenty. But I love them all!

hahaha!! I didn't actually watch the video before; that was awesome!! actually a lot of Lemon's traits are also things that one or the other of our Shelties do... one sleeps with his eyes partially open and twitches / dreams a LOT, another of them is the queen of moaning, groaning, and sounding extra pathetic; ad the third one is afraid of our cats.
So, our three Shelties = one greyhound! lol!!
I have mentioned getting another pet (mostly joking) once or twice, usually when we're at the Petsmart and we walk past the cat adoption cages... my boyfriend says no more pets until we have some attrition in the ones we have. (and then I sock him in the arm, because I don't want to think about that...)

I have had shelties for 26 years and love them to pieces (minus the hair). My friend has adopted greyhounds and they are the most mellow, low maintenance dogs! I can see how they could get a cat like reputation.

I want one too, mostly for the rescue aspect. But the "like a cat" aspect is also appealing!

Thank you for this terrific post and funny but so accurate video of Miss Lemon.
Greyhound addict here for over 20 years. The photos in the OP are classic examples of Greyhound "ETS", or escaped tongue syndrome. I have two Greyhounds and they both have this condition! They are so funny, sweet and very low maintence. I have never experienced dogs that are so grateful to have a home. My dogs wake up so happy, they just radiate the joy when they see you first thing in the morning.
One warning though, Greyhounds can be addictive and I am a "chipper", meaning I could not stop at just one at a time. True, they are tall but very narrow and do not take up much space. As previously mentioned they do make great apartment or urban dogs.
I have ton tons of volunteer work for Greyhound rescue organizations and I have not met a one I did not like. I think Greyhound Pets of America runs free adoptions in October too.
My avatar photo has one of my Greyhounds, "Hank", the big one on the right. The other dog is my Whippet.

Not by any stretch. I mean, we LOVE Jack to pieces but we don't plan on getting any more. We already have a squatty little cattle dog and he and Jack are fast friends. And even though Jack's size doesn't impact us much as far as how much room he takes up in the house, it is something we have to work around when we travel. He's big; he needs a lot of space in the car, a big kennel, and we can't just fit him inbetween our kids in the backseat. DH and I both drive small SUVs and trying to take both dogs, both kids, and luggage with one vehicle? Bananas. We will probably always have two dogs but only one grey at a time.
