I'm looking for new sheets and pillows (maybe).
Pillows: I don't like big, fluffy pillows that keep your head at an unnatural angle and make you wake up with a stiff neck. But I would like a nice, soft pillow. Do you love yours? And if so, what do you use?
Sheets: Why would I want organic cotton (versus regular). Is 400 count enough? Is 600 count better?
Duvet and cover: even with the lightest one, I still sweat like a pig at night. Do you use one? Or just a sheet and light blanket.
Thank you for any insights.

Pillows: I buy the cheapest feather pillows from The Company Store. I think they are 90% feather and 10% down. They're perfect in my opinion, soft but supportive, with the added bonus that they ARE the cheapest feather pillows TCS sells. I buy the zip-on cotton protectors, too, to keep them cleaner over their lifetime. They last a few years and then kind of collapse ... they're on all the beds in my house, so usually I replace a couple every year or two during their winter white sale. Sheets: 400-600 count cotton sateen is very nice. When you start getting into a much higher range, I've read that the sheets become so thin they wear out easily. I also like a crisp cotton percale (more like 200 thread count, I think). I only buy all-cotton sheets, although I've heard bamboo is nice, too. I don't think I've ever had organic cotton and not sure if it makes any difference. But I'd bet it doesn't, unless you're eating the sheets. Duvet and cover: I too sleep warm. I have a down blanket (lighter than the lightest down comforter) I keep on my bed three seasons of the year, with a cover layered over it, rather than enveloping it, just for convenience. In winter I add a lightweight cotton blanket under the down blanket. In summer I take off the down blanket and just use the cotton one, and when I say it's lightweight ... it is extremely lightweight. It's really just several layers of cotton gauze stitched together. On the hottest summer nights, I take the blanket off the bed and just sleep with a sheet and duvet cover. I love my bed. I also have a 3" memory foam pad from Costco over the mattress, so I sink in when I get into bed. Did I mention I love my bed?

I don't like the big fluffy pillows either, but that's all I can find. I have old pillows that I use because they are the only comfortable ones. I cover them with a vinyl cover and a microfiber cover and pillowcase.
I am not in the budget for expensive pillows, so I have only looked at Kohl's, Target, etc. I am very picky!
It's always cold in the fall, winter and spring here, so we have flannel sheets, a light blanket and a quilt. Usually we can use cotton sheets in April-Sept. I can't tell a difference between cheap and expensive sheets, so I am no help!

I'm at the place in my life where I simply won't buy crappy sheets or pillows anymore, and I have to feel them before I'm going to fork out what a decent set of sheets costs these days (especially for a king sized bed). I look for 400-600 thread count, any higher than that they are typically counting the individual strands of thread in each thread and that's pretty bogus. 400-600 TC sheets will last a long time and they get softer with age, so they are worth the extra expense to me. I like soft sheets, so I look for 100% Egyptian cotton or bamboo, both are nice. The last ones I bought I found at Tuesday Morning and they were nice sheets for a decent price (maybe $60 for the set? I don't remember exactly). They never have the same stuff twice there though. We have dogs that are on our bed at times, so I don't bother with a duvet. I have a couple of washable inexpensive (read: $40-50) comforters that we change out so they can be washed. I would love a nice duvet but for the time being it wouldn't make sense for us. DH has always tends to get hot so he throws all the blankets off the bed on his side. In the summer he even throws off the top sheet. I always used to be freezing cold all the time and needed to be warm in order to sleep at all, that is changing with age as my own internal thermostat is rising. I used to have a mountain of extra blankets on my side but not anymore. I have the sheet, a folded in half thin cotton blanket, the comforter and the dog's ratty blanket that he sleeps on on my side of the bed in winter. In summer I usually lose the extra blanket but keep the comforter because DH likes the A/C blasting all summer long and our bed is directly under the vent. I'm a side sleeper with back and neck problems so I'm done with cheap pillows too. My favorite was the down pillows from Select Comfort, but at $150 EACH or whatever they were the last time I looked at them, that's a little too rich for my blood. I ended up getting a two pack of down pillows at Costco for about $60-70 a year or so ago and they've been okay but they're the squarish European style and they don't fit nicely in standard pillow cases. I might have to check out the ones from The Company Store that lucyg mentioned and see if those would work for me. They do get beaten down over time and I hate having a stiff neck!

I like big fluffy down pillows. But, I don't find they hold my neck at an odd angle unless I use multiple. I buy mine from Hilton because I love their hotel pillows.
I don't think organic will make a difference in how your sheets feel, just your conscious if that is important to you.
I like 400 count cotton. They just get softer the longer you have them. We do sheet, blanket and duvet. You can pull them up or down based on the weather and temps. In the winter we add a heated mattress pad.

I have a sleep innovations pillow from Kohls. It's a memory foam type of pillow. I really don't know what's inside. It was $40 or $50 and the best investment ever! When you lay your head down, it kind of molds around it, but the pillow doesn't flatten.

I like goose down pillows because they're supportive but still squash into the right shape for my neck (I can't sleep on pillows that are too puffy.) I usually go for 95% down 5% feathers - the greater the proportion of down to feathers the better. They're expensive here, so I only buy on sale.
In terms of sheets I go for 100% cotton but not organic and 400-600 thread count. If you get a very high thread count they can wear out quickly. Ordinary cotton is fine as far as I'm concerned. The organic ones are a lot more expensive here and I've never had any reaction to ordinary sheets.

HOWEVER, I assure you I only spent half this much on it. Garnet Hill has gotten too big for its britches. LOL

I love high thread count sheets. I am a sheet snob. That said I don't find a huge difference between 600 and 800 thread count. I had some 800 ones and they were soft and I mean they were soft. I slipped off the bed. They are nice, though. I have no idea what brand they are as I bought them at a boutique downtown here. The 600 thread count ones are nice enough. They were cheaper than the 800 ones and a perfectly good choice. They had more traction so to speak, but were very, very nice. I don't know what 1000 feels like. I haven't tried out a ton of brands. I am happy.

HOWEVER, I assure you I only spent half this much on it. Garnet Hill has gotten too big for its britches. LOL Lucy, I have been coveting the Eileen Fisher bed linens at Garnet Hill, but they're so $$$. I really want a linen duvet cover in the pebble--I love the brownish natural linen shade. That blanket looks wonderful--I've wondered if it was really soft and comfortable. Dh and I both sweat a lot because of the chronic pain--it isn't our bed, we do it wherever we are. So since our bed is split, we each use our own blankets and comforters ( a down comforter we got at IKEA--it had two king layers that snapped together for winter, and one layer for warmer months--so we each have a layer)--we can fold it in half or just use one layer--it's so luxurious to have that huge fluffy down comforter all to yourself. AND they wash in our regular washer and stay fluffy. I just want a lightweight cover so I don't have to wash them so often, I've just been waiting to buy the duvet covers because I need two. I've been wanting a thin blanket/throw but haven't found what I want. I really want a cashmere one for winter--it can be a throw, but I've also wanted a soft, thin one for summer. The Eileen Fisher would be perfect! The throw length would work and be more versatile. I also love the pebble colour. Dh likes a heavier blanket, and I bought a few Ralph Lauren woven cotton ones from TJ Maxx that were on clearance. I bought a couple so I had some extras for the guest bed--nothing's worse than getting cold when you're at somebody's house and they don't have any blankets. We have a ton of different pillows. Dh has some memory foam ones he likes--he has one that supports his neck and comes up on both sides of his head--it's weird, but you can turn it so you can sleep on your side or get support on your back. I LOVE down pillows. I've thought about buying one of the really nice ones--there was a store in the mall that sold some really wonderful down pillows with great warranties. I've thought about the internet, but I like being able to feel the pillow and see how it's going to support my neck. I have gotten the best deals and favourite pillows at Tuesday Morning and a few at TJ Maxx/Homegoods/Marshalls. None of the pillows cost more than $50. Most were $20-$30. --I'm talking about 15 years of pillows. My two favourites really need to be replaced, but I love them. One is thicker and denser and the other is really fluffy, but they both support my neck, and I am a dedicated side sleeper (my heart works best when I sleep on my right side, so I automatically sleep on that side even when I want to sleep on my back to help the muscles relax, I wake up on my side) Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren both have really great pillows that I've loved. I love lots of pillows on the bed--I feel like I'm in a nest--pillow for my head, one sideways as a body pillow, and a fluffy one between me and the wall. When I watch TV in bed, I feel like I'm in the heavenly bed at Westin. For sheets, Sam's sells these 400 ct cotton sheets that are awesome. The twins are $20 and the king is $40. They have a lot of colours. Target also carries Fieldcrest which we also have and use--we have different sets in shades of cream, taupe and chocolate brown. The Fieldcrest are more satiny-polished cotton and a bit more expensive. Both sets are really soft and luxurious. I've also gotten some great sheets at Tuesday Morning/Homegoods/TJ Maxx/Marshalls. I really like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein (The CK are really $$$ at department stores, so I really liked it when I could find a great deal at the store--oh, and always check the clearance section.

This is perfect timing. I just told my dh we need to get new sheets. I may try those company store pillows. We are using those memory foam ones from Costco with the cooling gel pads. I swear they make me hotter.
