Scenario: Sweet, cutsey foo foo baby shower. Lots of pink and flowers, old school, traditional baby shower. Hosts are older women (60's) who were the pinterest of their group before pinterest was a twinkle in the eye of the internet. Their style is classic and sophisticated.
Need: A serving mechanism for a sheet cake. They want to put it on something pretty. They are very talented and can probably manage to make just about anything short of building an extra room on a house. They are also in a position that if they want to buy something, they can/will, but prefer something that they can DIY.
Theme: Baby ducklings. Pastel pinks, greens and yellows. Some silver accents.
Any ideas?

I think the tiered servers are very pretty and you can find them in all sorts of different materials from rustic to very elegant silver. What about cutting the cake into pieces and plating then putting the plates on the tiered server?

I would pick up some fabric (like a sweet yellow gingham) and wrap it around a cake board. If they're looking for something fancier, a piece of tempered glass held up with those dollar store glass candlesticks would be pretty too.
ETA: Something like this might work too (obviously, they'd want to do it rectangular for a sheet cake, would probably require at least 2 "bases"): DIY cake stand

I would suggest hitting Michaels or some other store that may sell cake supplies - and buy a 1/2" thick cake board in the size you need. Then it can be covered with something that will match the decor.
Actually - while AT Michaels, also pick up ModgePodge - and you can use napkins from the shower decor or wrapping paper that matches and modge podge it to the board. We had this idea demo-ed to us at a cake group I belong to.

schizo319 I might steal your idea. Fabric around board, on legs, then put glass on top. Metal trim around edge. I need a temporary, but pretty display! Hobby Lobby sells similar metal trim shown in your link in ribbon section (weird) it was half price a few weeks ago. They also had some 2" or wider. I bought a roll knowing a project would come. Don't they always? Sorry for sidetrack, Anxious.

For my husband's 40th birthday party, I bought a piece of plywood cut to size at Home Depot/Lowe's. I covered it with birthday wrapping paper and served the cake on that. It was perfect.

I had a friend who is very creative and when she threw a baby shower for a mutual friend she covered a piece of plywood w/wall paper from the nursery, the father -to-be gave her a part of left-over roll. She put the cake on top, it was a hit because it was personal to the mom & baby.
(I just called her for more info for you) She's used this "trick" before and reuses the board--she never leaves at the party-or throws is out). Her dimensions for the board she said are about 32 inches long x 24 wide & got it from a local hardware store that cuts wood. She said keep the cake on the cardboard liner that it comes on so it's not touching the surface.
She said she's covered it before w/cheap Walmart themed fabric that she threw out after the cake cutting for her kids b-day (used staple gun to attach) / wrapping paper had to use duct tape to get it to stick to the bottom of the board (may have to cover twice if the paper it thin)
Also if she has "extra" room she may decorate the board---Her kids theme one year was cars--she said the cake was small so she hot glued hot wheel cars along the edges to take up room. Walmart $1 each and just pitched them after the party.
She is also not a baker and always buys store bought cakes...but she is a DIY party planner.
Good Luck~

Or a picture frame.

I loved #4 the Get Out The Cake Stands - Here is the link
You can’t possibly have a tea party without a cake stand. Don’t have one? Don’t panic. They’re pretty simple to make - and you don’t need to be a DIY pro ether. Make this simple chandelier version with an old light fixture, some plates and glue. Or stick pretty plates to upturned glasses, candlestick holders or tea cups for the ultimate vintage vibe.

I also love this too and then add decorations to go with the theme.

Thanks for all the ideas! I know that there are no paper products being used, so I can't suggest any kind of decoupaged napkins or the like (china, cloth napkins/table clothes/etc.) But maybe fabric on a board might be a good idea.
But I am still listening if there are any other ideas?
I think it is a half sheet cake so the size is fairly substantial. They are also having bite sized cupcakes, but they already have a serving display for those.

If they're going to cover a board with fabric, a good adhesive might be a spray adhesive. It goes on smoothly, and depending on what type you use, the fabric can be removed after the shower so the board can be used again with a different fabric. I use Elmer's spray adhesive (the can tells how long to wait after spraying to make it either permanent or temporary).

Sorry that some of mine are for cupcakes but maybe it will inspire some good ideas. So what about flipping a box/crate over and putting the sheet cake on top (decorate as needed). Then the box/crate could be used in the babies room for storing books or toys.

We do this often for serving pieces-- get a huge decorative picture frame and pop a mirror into it. Place the cake right on the mirrored surface. We also will use smaller frames with mirrors for appetizers or other pastries.
We place the large frame in the center of the table, elevated (we use pedestals or wood boxes and fabrics to drape around it). It looks awesome!
I also was asked to bring my quiches to a shower and the hosts had this very large wood cutting board that I laid them out on and it looked fabulous!

I have a plastic tray that looks like cut crystal that I use for a half sheet cake. I bought it at the dollar store and people think It really is crystal and came from some place expensive.

Any ideas? First of all I LOVE this line....."who were the pinterest of their group before pinterest was a twinkle in the eye of the internet. Their style is classic and sophisticated. " --- I know exactly the type of ladies you are talking about!! Could you just use a board cut to size that is wrapped in aluminum foil (the silver) and covered with doilies (to give it a nice "finished look") -- they come in lots of colors instead of just white. Michael's has them. Then it will be sturdy and decorative but not another "useless serving piece" that will likely not get used again? My description doesn't make it sound very pretty but if you do it skillfully, it looks nice. You could also add flowers on the edge if you wanted to. Very pretty look and easy to do.
