Mostly I enjoy reading the political threads unless they get really ugly. I've learned a lot about politics and sometimes the threads can really make me think about my position on things. Anyway, I was thinking about non-binding resolutions the other day and really I don't get them. What is the point? It seems to me they are just statements about a situation or position and don't really accomplish anything. So why does Congress or a State Legislatures pass them? They appear to be a waste of time to me. Am I missing something?

They give legislators a chance to bloviate. And this post gave me a chance to use the word "bloviate." So, thank you.

They're symbolic ways a politician can go on record for voting a certain way, even if the resolution has no teeth. Then they can create a TV ad about how Senator So-and-so voted to cut taxes or supported a gun rights bill without ever mentioning it was symbolic.
