We're thinking of getting one. My neighbor just got one and we need to add another car to the family. My neighbor said they are offering good tax credits/incentives right now. DS is getting his license next month, DD is coming home permanently from college and I'm working more. It's all electric and gets 80 miles to the charge. One of my jobs is only 4 miles from home so it should work fine for that. I would probably give my PT Cruiser to my son to use (not have). DD will then hopefully carry her own car expenses.
If you have one, what do you think of it?

Research the maintenance costs and battery replacement. You may find that in the long run the gas savings does not outrun the long term costs. Electric cars are notorious for being expensive to repair. Also look into costs for insuring and the likelihood/costs of repairs if it is wrecked. My DH manages an auto shop and has turned wrenches for 30 years. He is not a fan of electric cars because of the maintenance and repair costs.

Thanks for that feedback. We already have a Hybrid that needed the battery replaced at about 250,000 miles so that is a real concern too with an electric car. The battery costs $3,000 but in this instance, we thought we got a lot of miles out of the original one. I will definitely look it other related expenses too.

We have purchased 2. Both are/were gas powered not electric. They are/were our daughter's car.
The 1st one was totaled when dd was t-boned at a traffic light ladt summer. Another driver turned left right into her. 3 airbages deployed, dd walked away with no permanent damage. The car not so much, but Big Red held up well. The Mustang that hit it eas far more damaged. We were pretty impressed. We bought her another one.
They have a really good safety rating for their class. She gets amazing gas mileage and they are surprisingly roomy on the inside. I wouldn't want to take a long road trip with 4 adults in it, but for her it is perfect. Her and her soriety sister have a lot of fun in it. It is the perfect car for a young girl in an urban setting.

If I only worked 4 miles from my work I would bike it.

If you can wait 6 months or so, I recommend waiting for the Chevy Bolt. It is an electric vehicle which will have a 200 mile radius.
