If you don't mind answering, how much does your teen get weekly for lunch?
My son does not think I give him enough for lunch. He will not eat the cafeteria food. He won't take food from home. He wants to eat at a fast food restaurant everyday. It's an open campus with an hour lunch as long as grades are good. I also know in the past, lunch money given to him was not used for food or he chose to use it for a couple of meals and not eat the other days. Anyway, minor issue but just curious.

both my kids take packed lunch, but they're also younger (3rd and 7th grade) and it's either that or the cafeteria. For me, I would have a hard time with him wanting to eat fast food every single day, so much so, that he would get $$ maybe twice a week and that's it.

They get 15 for the week, if they choose to eat on campus cool, if not budget or pack. They want extra we tell them to get a job. School lunches are 3$ The girls got smart and hooked up with friends and everyone packs something and they go to the beach for lunch on certain days or hit up a local park. They think it's retro to do a picnic lunch.

I give him enough money for a meal in the cafeteria, but that doesn't go far outside the school.

The HS my DD is in doesn't allow them to leave for lunch. I think since he won't pack lunch from home, he would have to deal with how much I gave him. Especially since he's been caught not using it for lunch money. Eating fast food every day is expensive! I would give him enough for a couple days of eating out and then he would have to bring his lunch the rest of the week.

This is a great time to teach your teen how to budget their money.
Decide what is a 'reasonable' $amount and help them to figure out how to allocate the $ each day. Best to learn how to budget earlier in life than later.

I give him enough money for a meal in the cafeteria, but that doesn't go far outside the school. This is exactly what we would do in your case We just add money to our dd's account as needed because she doesn't always buy and doesn't always take. So she doesn't have a budget right now. I don't think many people go out to lunch every day even when they work, which is what your ds is asking you to finance.

My freshman DD isn't allowed to leave campus at lunch until she's a junior so she either packs her lunch or eats cafeteria food. I put $100 in her lunch account at the beginning of the school year and I've yet to have to add more. Frankly I'm happy she can't leave campus, I can't imagine a kid eating fast food everyday!

I would pay whatever the school lunch cost plus a buck for water. Anything more than that, my son will have to spend his own money on.
I don't go out for lunch every day. If you want to, feel free to earn and spend your own money on that.

My DDs choices are school food or take a lunch from home. She packs her lunch everyday. IF eating away from school was a choice there's no way I'd give her money to do that everyday. I might give her a little extra to eat out once a week but that would be it.
eta: I didn't know that schools let kids leave for lunch. I had no idea that was still an option.

I don't give my kids any. I do pack their lunch everyday if they want it. I already pack mine and Dh's so two more aren't a big deal. They are 13 and 16 and if they want to eat at the cafeteria or somewhere outside school they pay for it with their own money. They both have jobs and expendable income but very rarely do they spend it on lunch.
If I were you I would continue what you are doing and give him enough to eat in the cafeteria. If he keeps complaining I would stop even that and let him eat from home or pay for it himself.

we pay for the standard cafeteria lunch - anything beyond that is up to them and comes out of their own personal money. They have the option of taking lunch from home or getting the cafeteria money...the school has a coffee/smoothie cafe and also has ala carte menu in the cafeteria but those are treats that they purchase with their own money if so desired. I only pay for fast food if there's a field trip involved.

I don't have children, so here's what my parents did (and some of my friends do now with their kids)....my mum found out what a school lunch cost. She gave us that amount X5 plus an extra $5 a week for water and/or snack as we stayed before and after school for extra curricular activities. We were allowed to spend the money as we saw fit. But once it ran out that was it until the next week. We could supplement with our own money or we could take a lunch from home. Or we could simply not eat while at school for a day, 8 hours give or take without food won't kill anyone.

I'm feeling better after reading these responses. Normally he's very quiet and I can't get him to talk to me, this morning was different and it really surprised me how he acted. He refused to take any money because it wasn't enough, and I was like WTH? I had to get back home and get my other kid to school, so there wasn't time to say anything. I'll offer him the weekly money when he gets home today MINUS the amount for today. If he pulls the same attitude, I'll try again next week. ETA: I've given him the same amount the whole school year. I thought maybe I need to reevaluate this, but I don't think I will! I might possibly up it a bit more for snacks because the cost is relatively low, but it aint happening this week!

$25 a week. She can use it in the cafeteria or off campus. She usually eats in the cafeteria. They only have 30 minutes and while she can go off campus, it's tight on time.

We are a closed campus, so there is no leaving for lunch. DS takes lunch from home Monday-Wednesday, and buys hot lunch on Thursday and Friday - this is more a function of my buying lunchmeat on Sunday and tossing what's left on Wed night than anything special about school lunch, which is actually woefully inadequate, particularly for high school athletes. (OK, jumping off my soapbox now). I would say that ds spends $6 for each day that he buys school lunch, including a bottle of water. This is just to get a minimal amount of food to tide him over til after school.
In your situation, your child is refusing to take food from home and is refusing to eat school lunch. If this is not what you want him doing, then put money on his school account and have stuff available for him to take from home. If he chooses not to eat, then so be it. You don't have to fund a $40 a week fast food budget!

The cafeteria where I went to high school was gross. Almost everything was packaged (think chips and hostess pies), but they had fresh French fries and milkshakes :/. My position on the cafeteria food would really depend on what was available. My inclination (my oldest is in eighth grade, and will be in an open-campus HS next year) is probably to have my kid take a lunch most days and give her enough for off-campus lunch a day a week.

I give him enough money for a meal in the cafeteria, but that doesn't go far outside the school. Same! Mine can get lunch in the cafe for around $5 a day so she gets $25 a week. I'd like to think she's buying something nutritional, not pocketing half the money and buying a candy bar

They did not get an allowance as I was driving them back and forth to their part time jobs and paid for their gas when they got cars (paid for by us.) So they could use the money we gave them for lunch anyway they wanted. I was sure to keep stuff available for packed lunches all the time and if they wanted to pack a lunch they could keep their lunch money for other things.

And a full hour for lunch?? That is an insane amount of time! Our school day is 7:11 am to 2:20 pm M-T-Th-F and 7:11 am to 1:20 pm on W - we have 7 class periods. Lunch is 27 minutes and since my DS has an offsite class that he has to catch a bus for, he actually gets closer to 18 minutes for lunch.

My kids aren't in the right grade for open lunch (upper classmen only) so it's packed lunch or cafeteria food. I put in $15 each for the weeks they are with me. Their dad won't give them money and makes them pack a lunch. I give them a choice and they opt for school lunch. $3 covers the lunch and an extra (chips or cookies).

I give my son $25 a month which is what he has been getting forever. I got that amount because that was about what he used in middle school. He takes his lunch most of the time but liked to eat at school occasionally. Now, he is a senior and they go somewhere basically everyday. But he still takes a lunch most days and takes it into the restaurant and eats there with his friends. I think there are a few each day that do that.
Now that I am thinking about it $25 is not very much but he seems fine with it and has never asked for more so I guess for the 15 days he has left before graduation, I will just keep it the same.

$20 per week, do with it what you will. If you want more, get a job. If you want to starve then splurge, go for it.

It was one of those situations where your mouth opens and you're shocked at how your kid behaves. I'm thinking WTH, then before I can regain composure, he was gone.

(I think lunches are $2.80 or something here, so it would be like $20 a week). She can work if food from home isn't good enough.

My dd always has a protein bar in her back pack. That way if she just didn't get enough for that day, she can eat that. It is easy to carry, filling enough to get her through the end of the day, and then she can eat when she gets home.

I don't know what the hell the problem was this morning. The kid isn't stupid. He sold fruit gusher fruit snacks for $1.00 in middle school that was supposed to be part of his lunch. Last year, he sold a big bag of Smarties for $5.00 that was bought for a lower price. We live near a park and he sets up a concession stand in our driveway each summer when there are games.
