DH almost made this mistake when we registered to vote in CA, so I can see it happening. If you haven't received notification asking you what ballot you want for the CA primary, you aren't registered as an Independent (or no Party Preference).

They think more than 70% are in the party by mistake. That's kind of a huge deal I think. Hopefully by getting this out there people will know to change it.

I remember registering in my town for the first time. I wanted to be an independent voter, and the town clerk asked if I wanted to be part of the Independent party or if I wanted to be unenrolled in any party. I never realized there was a difference.
