So it is Friday, the end of the week. When I had a M-F job, I LOVED Fridays! The work week was OVER! DONE for the week! At the same time, I was a lot more efficient at home. I knew I had to get everything done around here in two days, PLUS have some fun, so I was motivated to FINISH things. But now that I am retired, the days kind of run together. I find I can procrastinate and the work will still be there tomorrow. I start a lot of things, but very few get finished...
I have the same problem trying to finish off a page. When is enough ENOUGH? Maybe I should add one more element... And heaven forbid I quit adding spray colors when it looks almost OK. Oh no. I need to add that last color and ruin the whole page... Sometimes those last minute additions really pull the whole LO together. Sometimes they wreck the whole effect. I really need to know when to QUIT!
Also, I am never sure when or how I need to wrap up one album and move on to the next. I keep looking for seminal moments with the perfect photo to wrap up the season or the topic. And even when I have created the last page, I suddenly think I need to add something somewhere in the middle. Thank the scrap gods for 3-ring albums!
So my question for YOU this Friday is how do you decide how much is enough on a page, on a card, in an album? And wishing you all a happy scrappy weekend!

I work half days on Fridays so they're my favourite work day.
I don't really know how I know to stop on my pages, I just usually reach a point where I think "there". Often at that point I'll be moving an embellishment around the page but can't seem to find the perfect spot for it. I leave my pages out for a day or two to admire them so if I come back and don't love something I will add or remove whatever is bothering me.

Oh this is definitely a problem for me, but I figured out a way that works for me on those pages where I'm not sure of the last few elements. Here's my process - I don't glue down the finishing touches until I've taken a photo of the page. I place my few last things where I think I'd like them, take a photo, rearrange the elements, take a photo, add a thing or two, take a photo, etc. I find that looking at the photo of the page really helps me determine the line between finished/too much. It's a stepping back to see the big picture and how it all works together. I can spend up to about 10 minutes doing this and then finally glue down the arrangement I like best and call it done.

This has gotten easier for me since my style has simplified. I don't try to "do it all" on a page anymore. I'm more tempted to do all the extras while working on things other than page LO's, like cards, mini books or art journaling ( which I haven't done in ages! ...hmm do I see an inky, messy day in my near future??)

I find that looking at the photo of the page really helps me determine the line between finished/too much. I hadn't thought about it but often I'll stand up and look at my layout (I scrap sitting down) if I'm struggling to work out what it needs. The different perspective often makes me change my mind on where things should go.

how do you decide how much is enough on a page, on a card, in an album? First, I just gotta say, I love these threads! Thanks for posting them. For a layout, I tend to add until it feels finished. Sometimes the layout is really simple, sometimes not. It often depends on my mood. I have an order that I put a layout together in: Pick photo(s), grab background paper, grab two to four coordinating scraps of paper, adhere photo & layered scraps of paper to background. Journal on tag/journalling spot/etc & adhere. Then the rest is "jewelry." Stamped images, a sticker alpha title, enamel dots, Stickles, paper punched shapes, paper flowers. I just throw them all on there (I tend towards embellishment clusters, in threes, sometimes fives). I don't make cards often anymore. No one appreciated them when I did, and it hurt my feelings to put that much love into something that others didn't value, so I just stopped. My albums are mostly ongoing. They end when I can't squeeze in another layout. Other than (my version of) December Daily albums with are from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. Or school albums, where I often have two to three school years in each album, and try to keep the school years together. Ex: PreK & Kindy together, then new album for 1st & 2nd grade.

First, I just gotta say, I love these threads! Thanks for posting them. Agreed! I used to leave a 'fininished' layout on my desk for a few days and looked at it every time I go by. Now, I typically can work it until finished and be happy with the result. I just add until I feel it's finished which is different for each layout. Yesterday, a layout had just 3 buttons, a title, and 2 pl cards (1 for journaling) and some washi. Sometimes the layout has a massive amounts of stuff. The one on my desk already has 10 things in addition to all pattern paper and foiled vellum and I've only had 10 minutes with the layout so far.

I'm loving these threads also - thank you!
too much isn't an issue I struggle with scrap-wise...sometimes I wonder if there's ENOUGH on my layout but then I try adding more and I rarely end up happy so...
albums -space is usually the determining point for me

I struggle with the embellishing part...I don't think I do enough. I try to keep the visual triangle, so tend to do 3 spots...3 of the embellie. But I find when I look back at the book, even though my layouts are simple, they are not 'as bad' as I thought at the time. I like the taking a picture idea...as it happened to me recently, while posting a pic on my blog..I 'saw' that one of the pages is top heavy...so I can go back and give 'balancing' it a try.

Funny you should mention taking a photo to help with page design! This was a quick journal page to upload to LOAD. The prompt was to document a challenge. And then they challenged us to do a page in HALF the time we usually use. The page itself came together really quickly. I had been wanting to use the BoBunny technique of scribbling flowers AND Dyan Reavely's technique of spritzing colors over wet white pigment spray for a marbling effect. When I say the LOAD prompt, and decided to do a journal page about surviving cancer, I remembered I had a keychain charm I could use... and when I pulled it out, it really looked like the shape of a flower petal, so... The page came together really quickly. But when I took a photo of it, I didn't like it, so I added the washi tape stem and leaf. Took another photo. Still didn't think it looked finished. So I grabbed the Doodlebug enamel dots. Put the one in the centre. Took another photo. Decided to add more dots... Good thing the LOAD challenge was to HURRY, or I might have been fooling around all day. When I claimed 23 minutes, I didn't include the most time consuming part of all: getting the ring off the charm! That happened before I grabbed the white spray. grammadee, love your page! Using the key chain for the petal was a brilliant idea.

Hmmm...how much is enough on a page? For most of my layouts I like a clean, airy, linear look. On layouts when I use more layers and embellishments I stop when I feel there's any competition for the attention the pictures should get. I'm loving these threads, too, grammadee . I'm SO glad you volunteered to host the challenge.

I just finished layout #15. It's of DD playing in some goopy stuff I made out of cornstarch when she was little. DD2 touched and said nope I'm not playing with that and DD1 sloshed it all over the place. They're so different. I used Dear Lizzy Neopolitan. I forgot how much I loved that collection. I found some brads at A Walk Down Memory Lane's closing sale so I'll probably add some of those when they come in the mail.
On to 16!

My favorite day is Sat. I can sleep in and then stay up as late as I want. Fridays drag until it is time to leave work!
I know I'm done with a page when I have used everything I wanted to put on it or when I have no more space to add what I have left.

grammadee love your page! If I feel a page isn't quite finished, I add embellishments until I think it's done or the page is full. I don't always quit while I'm ahead. Here is my LOAD page. I added the trees and boot prints because I didn't think it was quite done.

I got my 16th layout done. I don't have any more pictures to scrap so I have to start checking off other things on my to do list for the month. I pulled out a stack of layouts that need titles and/or journaling. I have 15 that need journaling, 9 that need titles and journaling, and 3 that need titles. Oh, boy. I didn't know it would be that many! I need to get over to Michael's tomorrow to get a new cutting mat for my Silhouette and new blades for my paper trimmer. Is it crazy to think I could do all of them tomorrow? After that I need to start editing another batch of pictures. The most dreaded part of scrapping for me. I will usually listen to the Scrap Gals while I edit but I don't think they have anything new lately. Any suggestions for scrappy podcasts?
