I'm digging into my first cantaloupe of the summer, and I peppered it up. I don't always do that, but it's really good. I think I got it from my dad--I remember him salting and peppering his cantaloupe (or muskmelon, as he called it.)
Just wondering how common it is.

I grew up salting melons, but have never seen anyone put pepper on them. Curious to see the responses here...

Yes!!! And I don't know anyone outside of my immediate family who does - so it's good to find someone else who does.

Nope, never heard of this before. But, as of this weekend, I'm not opposed to soaking serrano peppers in tequila and making a kick-ass spicy margarita

I have never seen nor heard of that. I too have seen people sprinkle salt on melons, but never pepper.
The only "fruit" I have ever seen anyone pepper is a tomato, although I know people don't typically really include tomatoes when they are discussing fruits in general.

Never pepper; that's interesting. I'll do a pinch of salt if the melon isn't very sweet

I like fruit with Tajin and some lime. Tajin is made of Mexican chilies, salt and some kind of limey (for lack of a scientific word) extract.

I think most native Okies pepper their cantaloupe. At least it is common in my extended family. If it is really ripe we might not. But one what is a bit green or barely ripe will get a dash or five from the pepper shaker.
An underripe watermelon will get salted.

Yes pepper cantaloupe and salt watermelons. I had forgotten that, but I do remember seeing people salt watermelon when I was a kid. Can't remember if Dad did or not. That habit didn't stick with me, but the peppered cantaloupe did!

No to salted cantaloupe only because I don't care for it.
But, (wait for it). Yes, to sugar on tomatoes when I was a kid.

My dad always put salt on his (muskmelon is what we called them), but I've never seen pepper used on it before.
I don't like cantaloupe myself, personally, but if it comes in a fruit mix I may eat it. Salt does bring out the flavor. (Dad used to put sugar on tomato slices, too, if I recall correctly... and eat radish sandwiches-- so he likes some strange stuff, lol!)

I salt and pepper my cantaloupe. I salt my watermelon. I don't do anything if I eat honeydew and that it rare. I don't really like that one.

No. It doesn't sound appealing to me so likely wouldn't even try if offered a piece. I like cantaloupe with a light dusting of powdered sugar on top.
