You have to wonder. Today the sign said "don't give money 2 meth heads." So are you supposed to give the guy money because he's not a meth head or is he telling you not to give him money because he is a meth head?
I guess it's an improvement over "f### you, give me money" which I have also seen at another freeway exit.
I didn't see anyone giving either one of them money so at least the people in the cars, read the sign...

The career panhandlers who work in shifts near the local mall have been using a sign that asks for money to go to "Mempiss."

I usually can't see what those signs even say.

I saw a sign a few weeks ago that made me smile. It said "Bet you can't hit me with a quarter" with a smiley face. I thought that was kind of clever, but sadly I didn't have any quarters.

Most of the ones around here have some variation of, "Homeless, anything will help. God Bless." We donate to local charities that serve the homeless, so hopefully we're already doing something that helps them without giving money to them directly.

The latest one I've seen says "Arrest Hilary". Most of the others I see are the generic ones.

We have one guy whose sign asks for money to help bury his son. He's been in different locations all around metro Phoenix with the same sign (or different signs but the same plea) for at least 3 years. Not sure where the body has been stored all this time but it's gotta smell something awful.

Maybe the sign mentioned in the OP is a PSA reminding drivers where the money will be going if they give to panhandlers by the freeway. Although I've read that many are folks with decent lives. It seems to be a career for some people.

I always feel a mix of cynicism and guilt when I pass these people. There are probably a few who are in genuine need, but my cynical mind tells me that they are not. I learned my lesson when I gave money to a man with a well rehearsed sob story and then encountered him again a few days later on a different street telling the same story.

There was a guy in Cincinnati who was out with his sign every Sunday noon when we drove through his neighborhood. He wasn't asking for money. He was angry and wanted everyone to know that someone had been unfair since the 1980s. The other side of the sign didn't give us any more clues as to who either, or how they were unfair. But the dude was pissed, and shouted a lot.

It's exceedingly rare that I see anyone panhandling around here, but when I have they have been in areas near shopping, not on highways or freeways at all.
There was a guy at the entrance to a mall many years back. His sign had something to do with him being a veteran. And once, near the road that leads to Target, there was a couple with a dog. But I have no idea what their sign said. I saw someone bring them burgers, though.
I can't really recall any others.

I saw a guy with a sign last year that said, "I'm honest. Need money for beer."

okay, the guy with the sign for 3 years wanting to bury his son is kinda funny, lol!! I intensely dislike seeing panhandlers around here; I see them at the same freeway exits every day on my way home from work. I also have the cynical feeling that some of them are making a pretty good living elsewhere and then getting extra cash by panhandling. They didn't allow it anywhere in the Chicago area, so when we moved to Phoenix it was a bit of a shock to me to see so many of them.

There are so many panhandlers in San Diego. It makes sense, we have great weather. I pass by the same 5 or 6 people every day before and after work. They stand out there all day long walking up and down the medians with their signs. I never give them money, I wish city officials would do more to help get them off the streets.

I saw this sign at 6 a.m. by the freeway offramp one day: "the early bum gets the crumb" - I thought it was funny, so I gave him a couple of dollars. I don't usually (because I give through a matching organization at work).

Same for me, I worked at a convenience store so I saw them often. The saddest was when people would buy them food but they didn't want the food, so they threw it in the trash. Ours just wanted money for drugs and alcohol

I admit, one of the many many reasons I miss Kayley was that she would bark ferociously at the pan handlers who walk up and down the traffic at a stop light. They avoided my car like the plague, walking fast as they went by. I also admit to encouraging this behavior by laughing the first few times she did it.

My best friend in Baton Rouge reminded me of this tidbit when I was visiting her last month. She arrived in San Diego in 1990 to attend my niece's wedding. My sister and I picked her up at the airport and as we were headed to the freeway, we were stopped at a red light when a man walked up to her window, pulled out his *member* and *waved* it at her. All three of us screamed ~ somewhat between fear and laughter ~ and as we drove away my sister said *Welcome to San Diego!*.
