Are there some cultures that celebrate this? Isn't it weird how most of us are feeling bad about a major life moment? We talk so much about empowering women, maybe we (not RefuPeas- women as a whole) need to work on this.I'm not chastising, I feel for her too! I was even glad menopause was complete early for myself. I hope she's able to manage. Do the students ride in the planes? That sounds amazing! I think our own personal experiences color how we feel about it. If having periods was a horrific and painful experience for someone they will naturally not be too excited about it happening for their kid. If it was never any big deal, it probably would be viewed more as something you just deal with. I fell into the nuisance/deal with it camp, but I wasn't having to put up with it in elementary or middle school either. IMO a female between 9-12 years old is still a little girl to me and not an empowered woman.

After my daughter turned 11 last year. She was all excited about it. Then after a few months she cursed that excitement. Bought her bike shorts for that time of the month. Helps with leakage when she does sports.

my youngest was ten when she started. Poor thing cried for days. I remember when we would be so excited and eager to get our first period. Nowdays, it seems like girls just don't want it at all. On another note, I have heard and it may be just propaganda, that the hormones in the beef we eat is the cause of the girls starting so early. On the Cosby show, an episode showed one of the girls getting her first period.... Her mom called it woman's day and it was celebrated by mom and daughter going out to dinner. I liked the idea so much that I did that with my dd. We went to a special restaurant and I gave her a ring that my mother had give me! It was a celebration.

Ugh. I was 13, and on a boat in the middle of Lake Michigan with my parents and a bunch of their friends. I pray that my daughter gets hers just as late as I did, and that she is at home.

I was 11 when I got mine. And you know I think when you are done having children you should be done with it too. I'm 40 and I'm so over it. LOL try being 54 after having started at 11 and still getting it!! I am REALLY over it!!

One of my better mothering moments was to have DD learn to use tampons right from the start. It took several months to really get the hang of it, but it's really made life easier for her. My DD was 11 years, 1 month and got her first one...at Girl Scout Camp. Horse camp. It was 100 degrees that week, high humidity and the firs had to wear jeans most the day because of the horses. She's also a dancer, so I bought her a box of tampons right away. I promised her that once she got the hang of it, she wouldn't go back to pads. I told her to practice and by month 2, she was only using tampons.
