She got her damn period. I got mine at the same age but I was really hoping she could hold off another year or two.
I could tell she had to convince herself today that life isn't over, lol. Plus her class had a field trip that involved flying and the pilots always do loops in the air and a bunch of other fun maneuvers, all things a girl doesn't want to do on her first period.
Why must girls get these things?!

And so it begins... I was 14, but my girls were 12. i learned as a mom to always have an extra package of supplies hidden. Why they tell me the day they get it that they are out of supplies is beyond me.

I got mine at 11, right before the big Girl Scout camping trip. Fun times. And tampons were not an option. DD got hers right at 12. Still sucks. Why can't girls get their periods at age 14? All girls, all over the globe. At least we, as moms, would know it was coming.

I feel for your dd. It's too bad there isn't some sort of warning system that sends out an alert 48 hours in advance of the impending first period. My dd got her first period the day after my dad passed away. We were at my mom's (who lives out of town) making the funeral arrangements when she came to me and told me she had started. Of course we had no supplies with us.
I like the idea of having a universal start age. I think 18 or 19 would be great. Then they would be out of the house and we moms wouldn't have to deal with so many hormones!

My period app sends me a warning via text. I've responded fuck off but it doesn't go through. I'm so done.

I agree it comes too soon. I was 11 when I got mine. And you know I think when you are done having children you should be done with it too. I'm 40 and I'm so over it.

I think I'll definitely get her started on a period app to at least give her some heads up. I'm just glad she got it first thing in the morning and not at school. She came to my bedside this morning with an "oh crap" look on her face. Can't say that I blame her for feeling that way.
I had the ablation 5 years ago so I luckily don't get it anymore, but it just makes me that much more empathetic to the poor thing, knowing she'll have to deal with it for so long. Blech.
I agree, it should a universal thing that girls don't get it until they turn 18.

my older daughter got hers at 11y3m...on the first day of middle school.
I think the younger one will probably still be in elementary school when hers starts - she's 9/3rd grade now and I'm predicting her to start at 10-10.5 based on development. That'll suck.
I was 12.5 and completely unprepared. Now I'm turning 46 and ready to be DONE with it but instead it's showing up every 3 weeks instead every 4-6 weeks, sigh.
I hope your daughter has an easy go of it with her period and learns that it doesn't have to slow her down

My condolences. My dd started hers 2 months before her 12th birthday. I was hoping she would wait longer but oh well. I started her on an app which right now she refuses to use so I keep up with it. Our cycles have been perfectly synced until this month when we were both off by one week. Fun times in our house during pms week.

Our fourth grade class always had a good handful of girls who had their period. These would be nine turning ten year olds. Many of my fifth graders got it too. It was funny how the girls who had it didn't want it and vice versa. i

I was lucky, mine didn't start until I was 15! The bad thing was my mom was so freaked out that she dragged me into the doctor to ask if there was something wrong with me. Awkward! Both of my sisters started when they were around 11 or 12 so I was definitely a late bloomer. ETA: One advantage to having my kid later in life is that by the time she hits puberty I'll already be through the change so there will only be one person with raging hormones in the house!

One of my better mothering moments was to have DD learn to use tampons right from the start. It took several months to really get the hang of it, but it's really made life easier for her.

Sorry I didn't say she couldn't, just not wanting to. Perhaps I'm putting feelings towards certain activities because of how heavy my periods were. I never wanted to even lie down for fear of looking like a crime scene.

It's funny because without periods life would never begin, but if I could personally end the whole period THING women go through and just push a button and a child could be born, I would be game for that. That said, I am not a fan of Always products as they don't agree with my skin, they might be perfect for her until she is an old pro at it. The wings are a lifesaver or at least they were for me!

This where I am so glad I had 4 boys lol!
I think I was 12 when I got my first period.
Earlier that year in school we had watched the film. At the time I had no clue what it all meant and I was too embarrassed to ask questions at school and shit my mom never ever made me comfortable enough to ask any questions.
When I got it we were staying at friends for the September long weekend. I remember going to my mom telling her I thought I was sick ugh. She didn't drive and had to tell my dad she had to go to the drugstore. He made a huge deal of it because he was on the way to a football game with his friend. Geez within a few minutes the whole house knew I had my period and of course I was totally mortified and still really was clueless
For years I felt ashamed of my period, thanks mom and dad for another fucked up thing you did as parents lol.

my youngest was ten when she started. Poor thing cried for days. I remember when we would be so excited and eager to get our first period. Nowdays, it seems like girls just don't want it at all.
On another note, I have heard and it may be just propaganda, that the hormones in the beef we eat is the cause of the girls starting so early.

I was 10. And I am pretty sure I was doomed to be early, because my mother 10, and her mother was 10. Ugh.
For me the worst was swimming. I hated trying to figure out how to keep everything under control and discreet when swimming. I hated having to go dashing into the bathroom the second I was out of the pool or lake.

I'm nearly 51 and Aunt Flo is a bigger bitch than ever! I wasn't regular when trying to conceive but I sure as heck am now. Wish she would leave the building for good. It seems to be getting worse rather than easier. I think there needs to be an on/off button. Want to get pregnant? Turn it on for a bit. Afterwards, shut the damn thing off!

Poor kid! I was 16, and my older kids were 15. I couldn't imagine having to deal with that at such a young age. It's bad enough as an adult! Why can't that wait until we are at least 21!

I began at 11...I have 3 older sisters, so my mom had experience in this. The school had not shown any movie. Girls didn't talk about such things. About 3 months prior to beginning I had little pains in my abdomen. I was afraid of appendicitis (a sister had had hers removed) When I told my mom, she gave me a book from the Kotex company and told me I was probably getting ready to start having periods. I was to read the book and let her know if I had a question. I read, but didn't question. So, when I began to bleed, I knew what was happening.
I never tried a tampon until college.
My periods were always heavy and very painful. VERY PAINFUL That pain did not stop until after I had a child. ...I was pain free when on the pill.
I did menopause when I was age 40. I always have wondered if our bodies have a set amount of years--early start = early stop.

I was 13 when I got mine, but oldest daughter was 11.5 and now we're waiting for my youngest to get hers...she's 10.5 now, so I'm hoping she has another year or two to go. Being a girl sure has it's challenges.

Are there some cultures that celebrate this? Isn't it weird how most of us are feeling bad about a major life moment? We talk so much about empowering women, maybe we (not RefuPeas- women as a whole) need to work on this.
I'm not chastising, I feel for her too! I was even glad menopause was complete early for myself.
I hope she's able to manage. Do the students ride in the planes? That sounds amazing!

My grandma had a severe nasal hemmorage the week before I got my period. When I woke up with my period during the night, I thought I was having one, too. Thank God mom let me stay home that day to get it sorted out.

I started late but I'm already winding down at 49. (YAY!) I don't know when my mom started but I'm pretty sure she stopped in her early 50's, same with one sister. The other sister had a hysterectomy around 43. Both of my sisters started years earlier than I did.
