Yesterday, I planted some new flowers in the pots right outside my side door. As I watered them this morning while the coffee made, my neighbor was in her yard watering her new flowers as well. We talked across the driveways as usual and she made a comment I have been mulling over ever since. She said it always makes her smile to see women tending flowers around their homes because, "Happy women plant flowers." I'm not sure it's that simple - lol - but it is a nice thought. And it's true for me at least. So... have you planted any flowers lately?

Hmmm, I don't know! I have planted a ton because I am so happy about our beautiful little garden attached to the house...so yes, I am planting flowers because I am happy.
My gigantic dog keeps wanting to stomp around on them though so I have an ugly barricade around the flowerbeds, that doesn't make me happy, lol.

I haven't...but that is only because the gardening gene totally skipped me. My mother, on the other hand, is a Master Gardener and is out in her yard for hours and hours and hours each week and she is one of the single most content people I know. I find that while planting flowers isn't my gig, sewing and cooking are-and I am pretty happy. I think it is more 'creative production.' But any time y'all want to come plant flowers for me I would appreciate it. I really have trouble getting into yard work.

I love that! I have purchased most of mine, and they are sitting out ready to be planted. They are my Mother's Day gift to myself every year. :-)

I have my first batch to plant if it would stop raining long enough to do it. I managed to get to the nursery the other day and bought 7 azaleas and 4 soft touch holly bushes to redo a bed in front. I still need to get a bunch of things to fill in some spots in my back beds.
It does make me happy to walk outside in the morning and see everything in bloom.

I have yet to plant any flowers this spring. Depression can be paralyzing. I'm sorry. I hope that veil may lift a little for you. I think it is more 'creative production.' That's entirely possible!

Interesting thought. I think planting flowers is like any other hobby. When one feels happy enough to pursue a hobby, one tends to do so, and it is self-reinforcing. People don't usually pursue hobbies they dislike.
So, I think planting flowers can be a sign of happiness. It's usually optional, so if people do it, it's either out of happiness or obligation to the property looking nice to others. I'd like to think it is out of happiness.

There is something to that, I think.
I have minimal flowers in my new home because the water spigot is in the front and the patio is around back. So watering them last year was a nightmare of trips to the sink with my watering can. I got a couple of pots filled with flowers from Costco, and that's it for this year.

Every spring I look forward to going to a special nursery and loading up. I usually make at least two trips. I spend several days planting. I have very little free time, but I make time for planting. Sometimes I get mad at myself when I have to do all the watering. It really does make a difference in my mood to see so much color.

I always have pots and hanging baskets. I have a few impatiens in the ground, too.
I put mine out last Saturday and had to haul them into the garage last night. It was supposed to get down to 30 degrees last night! It was 92 a week ago...gotta love Minnesota.

We have lots of nice things ready to plant, but only got a couple of pots done when it was gorgeous last week. We will be able to cluster it all together and cover it tonight. Our frost date is usually considered May 15 or so, but rarely do we go that late. My husband wanted to bring his plants home from his classroom for summer a couple weeks ago, but I had a feeling this would be a late frost year since it has been unusually cool. I don't like hot, but I like a little warmer than this!

I love the idea of planting annuals in the spring and get really energized about it in May.
By the time July comes around, I have lost all interest in maintaining them and get frustrated when they don't look great. Because of this, I have found myself planting fewer and fewer each year.
I don't know if this says anything about my happiness level, I think it's just a reflection of my laziness level and dislike of the heat of summer.

In warmer years I have to buy a new round of annuals midsummer. The spring stuff is too straggly to deal with. I also try to get things that go all summer. Dahlias are a great choice for that in Zone 5.

I like that!
I went for years not being able to plant anything due to where I lived. This year I have window boxes and have planted flowers in them. In fact right now I'm sitting on my balcony drinking coffee, looking at my flowers, watching and listening to the birds and enjoying every moment of it! I guess after living in places where I didn't have these things to enjoy it makes me appreciate them even more!

hmmm i'm not sure it always makes me happy to plant them, but I love to look at them Just bought a bouquet at the store this morning of cut flowers. They are cheap and last for weeks and make me smile. Still waiting for some of my favorite flowers to show up at the nurseries before I get planting.

I hate planting things and I hate yard work of all kinds. I plant flowers anyway because it makes me happy to look at them. So I don't know how that works in my case. I'd say I'm usually pretty happy.

I plant an obscene amount of flowers. I too had to cover them up last night due to cold temps. I'm happy most of the time, but my flowers make me happier. Work is evil at the moment so my flowers are my bright spot. We have had a cold, cloudy, wet spring so that's making me unusually grumpy as well.

This happy woman doesn't. I despise gardening in any form. But i agree with the thought that happy people Pursue activities they enjoy.

I don't know about flowers but I have a garden I plant every spring. Corn, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, beans. I really want to turn this diet pile behind the shed into a deep planter box and toss some fall squash seeds in it.
We're going to build a box for a corner of the yard and plant flowers to encourage bees. We have a peach tree.
I'm a fairly happy person. I didn't plant much before I met dh. Part of that was depression. Part of it was shitty neighbors.

We have 3 beds of annuals in our small back yard, and they give us such pleasure. Our back yard is fenced on 3 sides, so these spots of color really brighten our limited landscape. We also have a bird feeder in one of the gardens, and a nice variety of bird friends. Sitting on the covered patio at cocktail time and enjoying the flowers and birds is my favorite time of day.

Not yet, but i am eagerly waiting to do so. My garden is all cleaned out, freshly mulched and waiting. But around here, May is very iffy in terms of freezing temps at night. And I really truly suck at remembering to cover my more fragile plants. So I am waiting patiently to plant. We are still seeing nights in the 30s in the forecast right now. I do have flowering trees/bushes to enjoy in the meantime, though.

There is nothing that makes me feel as good as sticking my hands down in Mother Earth and planting something beautiful or edible. Every Spring I re-plant most of my potted plants with new annuals. I must admit it makes me very happy to see all the color and beauty on my porches.

With us, happy men plant flowers! My husband loves gardening and he grows flowers from seed in the basement to save money. We always get so many compliments on our gardens/yard. People think we have professional landscapers!

My hair dresser calls it therapy. There is something about putting your hands in that warm, fragrant soil and the blooms are the best.

I'm struggling with depression, but continuing to plant flowers and garden. It isn't coming from a place of happiness, but knowing I need to be doing something so a "fake it till you make it" type attitude. But I do feel at peace to look at the finished results...
