Saturday evening we had a visit from a fellow representing a company that takes aireal photos of farms. He had 20 photos of our yard with the fields in the background, and in the end we purchased the photos ready for printing and a slide show complete with intro, conclusion, and music, all on a memory stick and a CD.
So it got me thinking What's the BIG picture? As in, why are we doing this? What are we trying to show in our scrapbooks and in our digi files? For each person, it will be just a little different. I think for me, I want to tell a story. It might be a short anecdote that describes our experience of an event or shows a particular character trait, or a more important tale of what is important to us as a family. It's fun to play with techniques and papers and pretty things to create something cool, but in the end, I think the story is what I want to come through.
And as a challenge: create a page using one large photo. You can put the title &/or journaling right on the photo if you like. Even tuck some of the photo behind some pp or other elements. Have fun!

What's the BIG picture? As in, why are we doing this? What are we trying to show in our scrapbooks and in our digi files? My reason now is different from when I started 12 years ago. When I started, I thought I was documenting our life so that we could look back in fifty years and smile at what a success our life together had been. But the other half of "we" left me 6 years into my hobby. I stopped scrapping for a year. Heck, I barely took photos. Then I felt the urge to scrap again, but it was different that time. Now I scrap for me. To feel more connected to a life that sometimes seems to pass me by in a rush of my work, and kids school stuff, and a quick pace. I use scrapping to reflect on the happy moments in my life, and the little successes. The times when I can get the kids out to the children's museum. The school concerts and plays I see my kids in. And the funny things the kids say to me. So, big picture, I do this all for me.

grammadee - how neat to have aerial photos of your home! Big Picture? I was a genealogist/family historian long before I was a scrapbooker (genealogy since 1982, scrapbooking since 2002) and I see my scrapbooks as a combination of documenting our family life and glorified photo album. I'm old enough to remember sitting down and looking through my mum's photo albums as a child and having to ask who is this? where this taken? etc... I loved looking through them but as an adult, I hope when I finally inherit them that my mum wrote on the back of the photos. My scrapbooks answer at least the basic Who? What? Where? questions. I still love looking through my scrapbooks and so do my children. as for the challenge - I'll have to look and see if I have any BIG photos already printed.

The big picture for me is to have scrapbooks for my grandchildren. I want them to look at family photos and be able to read the who, what, where, and why.
I also do it as a method of relaxation and a creative outlet. Actually, that is probably first!

All of you have listed the reasons I scrapbook. Preserve our story, tell our story in photos, relive my own life (I am honest in my journalling when I do tell a story), show my family/future generations what our lives were like, show my boys how much they were loved when I'm gone, remember what was, what went before, keep photos out of a box, and then the added piece is have a hobby and creative outlet for myself. I can scrapbook as long as I am able and never get enough of my photos and memorabilia. I very infrequently scrap only one photo, or one large photo, but here is a recent layout I did of a photo I found on my son's facebook page. He and friends are hanging out at their live action role play activity. It is very simple and the book I scrapped it for is a 12x12 book. The thing is if I had done it for a smaller book or the photo had been larger it would have been exactly the same!

Great page myboysnme ! Love their laughing faces! I have finished my LOAD journaling page. I guess it qualifies for this as well, because starting with a 6x8 page, a 4x6 photo looks pretty big! The photo is of a word wall in a LSS. I snapped a photo because I loved all the inspiring advice. Today's LOAD prompt is "To Do List". Since I always need to remind myself to remember the big picture, I think this is a great inspiration to Just Be. just BE by Gramma Dee, on Flickr

So, big picture, I do this all for me. Me too, but slightly different reasons. I have a terrible memory! I don't think I realized that when I started, but it has been a great bonus! Also, I have realized that the process of scrapping helps me to remember things better. Aside from that, I love looking back through my albums, and I love the creative process. I feel like I am a happier person overall when I have that creative outlet. I've got two 8x10 enlargements in the mail, to go in DS's albums. I very rarely scrap that size, but Shutterfly had a freebie last week, so yay for happy coincidences!

Can't wait to see what you do with those big pictures, texasjen !
I managed to get a "real" page done today, using an 8x10 of dd & her family. They call him "Little Man" all the time, so the title block which was part of the ep "Little Man" collection, was perfect!

When you are working with one photo and it is BIG, the page comes together pretty fast!

Working on the last two layouts which were both flower photos - I also scrapbook to showcase my photos...not just the snapshots (although I love those for the memories and the stories) but also the pictures which I'm proud of taking, that came out JUST right. I got my first camera for my 7th birthday (a Kodak 126) and my first SLR at 15 with the money from my first summer job (Pentax K1000) so photography is probably the hobby I've been doing the longest (although genealogy is close behind). That might be why my layouts tend to be fairly simple, clean, linear, uncluttered - I want the photographs to shine and the paper/embellishments to enhance them rather than take away the focus from them. Just random rambling

myboysnme, great layout. love the energy the page gives off. grammadee, I would have totally snapped a photo of that as well. Great LOAD page. Your layout is so cute. Loving the title work. BIG PICTURE: For me: horrible memory and this helps me to remember things and a creative outlet. For my family: to help them know they were loved. Generally, I like to tell stories on the page as well. However, sometimes, it's just a cute photo and there is no story and I just get to play. Day 15: 2 page layout complete. This brings my total for the year to 40. My total for ALL of last year was 39. I'm thrilled.

myboysnme , great layout. love the energy the page gives off. The funny thing is, at first glance the layout looks like it is not my theme style, until you see the templar cross in the background, lol! I was so excited that this paper had all the colors they are wearing, and a theme element to boot!

love the layouts!
Big Picture - I like that I am documenting for the family, but I think #1 for me is the enjoyment of creating. I am not an 'artist' and this is a way I can participate in art. This was my empty nest therapy...and I just love it.
rarely scrap a large photo, will see what I can find and do...

Big picture: when I was a teenager and just had a photo album and the school years book my mom started for me, I kept memorabilia. I also kept a journal very sporadically. Scrapbooking lets me keep my photos, memorabilia, and stories in one place while being creative. LOAD prompt was our to do list, so instead of using one big picture, I used 7 small ones!
