other areas? Care to show a pic? I am thinking about having removable shelves put in on either side of the fireplace in the living room, but DH is having trouble picturing it and wonders if it would be worth it.
Do you like them? Hate them?

I do, only on one side and our fireplace is not centered to the wall, but is sorta to the room. Because the built ins are next to the dining room and the lower part is a cabinet I turned our built in's into a bar!

We had a built in buffet added to our dining room that matches the kitchen cabinets and countertop. Love them!
I am all about storage, so unless it would severely limit how you arrange your space I say go for it. I also second the Pinterest recommendation, there are some things you can do to really add some punch. I love it when they put lighting across the top and doors or drawers on the bottom. I'd make a list of everything you'd want to store there before completing the design. That way you can make sure there are enough drawers for blankets and shelves for decorative items. Use it as a great opportunity to make room for things you want in the living room but never knew where to put them.

I do. They are on one side of my fireplace and a closet door is on the other side. Love them. It is where I keep my 60 plus scrapbooks I have made. I do 12 x 12 3 ring binders so you can tell lots of shelves. They go from floor to ceiling.

Both side of the fireplace. Part is covered with doors, part is open. I haven't looked lately, Houzz used to be a good site. Easy to search.

Not in my livingroom or family room but I added them in my studio and in our mud room. LOVE them! Worth every penny in both areas and made both spaces so much more functional.

I have built in shelves in three places - one wall in a narrow part of the dining room leading to the sitting room, most of one wall in smallest spare bedroom and behind the door in my walk in linen closet. I use all shelves for books.
