Maybe kind of a dumb question....but seriously, I just want a plain couch, three-seater probably. Not one that opens up to a bed. Nothing fancy. If it has an armchair to match then great but it doesn't have to. I thought we'd look at Costco online but all they seem to have is sectionals or sleepers. A friend suggested Ikea but I'd have to drive down there and look, then pay separately for delivery.
I see commercials for furniture places -- Bob's, Marlo's, those kind of places. Are they decent quality? Like I said, I do not want top-of-the-line. There won't be a lot of wear and tear on whatever I buy because dd and ds don't live here for most of the year. We're going to try to keep the dog off of it, although that may be a failure. I'll just throw a cover over it when we leave the house.
So where do I buy a sofa for an ordinary person who lives in an ordinary house?? (I keep saying that because I've seen some that are WAY too fancy for my liking. They look like they belong in a rich person's house. That's not us. lol)

We got ours at La-z-boy. We didn't want a pillow back or with separate pillows for the back. We looked at several big furniture stores and La-z-boy was the only place we found what we were looking for, and at a reasonable price.

They had a really cool deal going on and we went for it. Our new furniture is very nice and I like what we are getting. They had plenty of sofas. I think their prices here for the quality are one of the best. You can get way more expensive in town, but we didn't need anything that extravagant as we have a beautiful living room.

Try a Bassett store. A few years back, we bought a sofa similar to this one at the Southlake, TX store. Very plain, very simple. Just a couch you sit on. That's all it does. LOL www.bassettfurniture.com/Traditional-Style-Upholstered-Sofa-DZ21059.aspI think we paid about $800 on sale. Nice quality and its worn very well. For less expensive option try Ashley Furniture. It definitely is not of the kind of quality that last very many years if used as a primary couch (at least ours didn't ), but okay for occasional use.

Since we have a small living room it was really hard for me to find the right couch. I wanted a brown couch, smaller in size, not oversized and trim lines for the right scale. I have two, one in my living room that I got at Target online and one I got somewhere else. Crud I can't remember where I got the one for our family room. I think it might have been online also, maybe Overstock dot com.
I first saw the style I wanted at Pier One, but they were sold out by the time I found them.

I bought mine at Ethan Allen--it's the Bennett sofa. It really wasn't that much more expensive and it's really well made. It the same couch (& fabric) as Carl's grandmother has on Mike and Molly and I've seen it on another show as well, but can't think of the name of the show.

I didn't want all the pillows and stuffing. I also didn't want one of those huge, deep couches-I am short the trend with deep couches is very uncomfortable for me to sit in. I found what I was looking for a La-z-boy store for a really good price. I have had it for about five years and it has held up really well-taking all the abuse that teen boys can dish out.

Have you looked at Belfort Furniture? They have a large showroom in Sterling, VA. I've heard their customer service is horrible but every time I've been there (I love to look at furniture) they've had a lot of customers in the store.

I like Crate and Barrel - they have good quality, not as cheap as Bob's or Ikea, but not over the top and a wide range of styles, many that are fairly casual looking.

ours came from Big Lots - I don't think they are super-good quality but I expect they'll last until my youngest is grown (she's almost 10) and that works for us.

Our experience with Ashley Furniture was less than stellar. We bought two recliners and a small dining set for the lake. The chairs were made of the cheapest particle board inside and we just know they won't hold up for the long haul. DH left a bag of mini donuts on the table and the tabletop got terribly scratched up by one of the dogs less than a week after we bought it. Deep, ugly scratches that can't be covered up or hidden. Also one of the dining chairs had a broken leg and DH had to wait a week for the replacement to come and had to go back to the store on the far side of the city from us a second time after it came in. Never again. We won't be going back there for anything. We're at the point in our lives where we don't want to spend money on disposable furniture anymore.

I just bought a new leather couch today - a very traditional style. I've been looking off-and-on for a year or so and yesterday stumbled across the perfect one. I took a few photos to show my husband and he agreed, so I went back today and bought it.
As I've shopped around for it, there's not been a shortage of options. While sectionals and sleepers are out there, there are plenty of "regular" couches as well. I think when you go out and look, you'll be surprised by the choices available to you.
