Whoa! That's impressive. Can't wait to see this on tv. DS was a newborn when we watched the summer olympics 4 years ago. I remember holding tiny little him watching replays of the events and nursing him in the middle of the night, thinking WOW, he'll be four yrs old the next time these games are on. I can't believe that's true and that it has been four years! I hope he watches some of them with me. But not in the middle of the night this time

That's pretty stunning, but seeing those people standing on top of it, even if they're CGI people, makes me want to barf. I get woozy just thinking about it!

That's really impressive and more so that it is solar powered. Way to go Rio, impressive visual AND environmentally friendly!

It looks phenomenal. BUT. It should be done by now. These are concept pictures, not photos of the actual structure. If it's not done by now, I don't see how it will get done in time for the Olympics.

Indeed. I'm not filled with confidence about everything being completed and well built after seeing several stories over the last few months. Fingers crossed they can pull it all together!

That really is too bad, but I can't say I'm surprised. Brazil had trouble being ready for the World Cup two years ago. This particular piece of architecture was overreaching.

I don't understand how they can't have it done. Same with Russia in 2014. These countries have at least 8 years notice!!! They knew in 2008 that they would be hosting the 2016 games!!!
Is it just poor management or another case of someone in the committee who absconded with most of the funds?

Is it just poor management or another case of someone in the committee who absconded with most of the funds? I think it's a combination of both. The IOC is one of the most corrupt organizations out there. The awarding of an Olympics has more to do with who lines the most pockets, than it does with if the country hosting can actually support the infrastructure needed. That's why I think we probably won't see another North American Olympics, anytime soon.

Yes, I read that the only organization more corrupt than the IOC is the World Soccer Committee.
Such a shame that something started to bring the world together and give amateur athletes some recognition has turned so ugly.

I liked it until the last rendering which shows it with the beach and mountains. The natural landscape is so lovely that the big, fake square waterfall completely ruins the scenery for me.

I see nothing appealing about erecting essentially a football field on its end of concrete on an island with a huge ass ugly field of solar panels behind it that for "special occasions" you can turn into a waterfall. 90% of the time it's just a 105 meter ugly building completely ruining their beautiful natural vista with an even uglier solar field. The entire thing is probably not technically feasible any way - but Rio has about 5 million more important things to accomplish than this half baked idea.

Wasn't Brazil's president just run out over controversy about fund mismanagement? I have friends that live in Brazil, and my dh has visited Sao Paulo and a friend lives there now. So many people have so little. I know that the olympics brings in a lot of money for the cities, but does Rio *really* need this monstrosity when so many people in Brazil live so below the poverty line and the Zika virus is going to cost their healthcare system millions? (even before Zika, Rio itself had enough problems without spending money it doesn't have on projects like this)
You'd think that if they can project a waterfall onto the solar panels that they project the view behind the structure onto the panels so it looks transparent. The crown fountain in Chicago shows videos of people with water coming out so it looks like the people are spitting water. It's really cool.

Dh and I are going to rio for the games. It is our big 50th birthdays/20th anniversary gift to each other. It will be interesting to see how much they are able to pull off.
If the IOC had awarded the games based in the city most able to successfully implemnt their plan and put on the games they would be here in Chicago.

but Rio has about 5 million more important things to accomplish than this half baked idea. Yup, that's true. Nevertheless, they didn't get everything accomplished and the athletes will be competing in sewage and garbage infested water: LinkI can't imagine training and conditioning for years only to be given the choice of competing in water that could make you seriously ill or not competing at all. By the way, didn't I read that Brazil a socialist democrat country? Yup, #12 on the list.

She was injured before the trials, I can only imagine all that hard work to swim in such severely polluted water. The IOC should be ashamed - but that's nothing new.

#12 as in the 12th socialist democratic government listed in alphabetical order? If only their name had begun with an 'A' they could have been #1.

And from what I could gather, the link provided was actually listing parties that had been in control in various countries, and the dates, not whether or not the country itself was supposed to be a socialist party. But I think beckytech was insinuating that the US would turn out like Rio if we elect Sanders for president.

As beautiful as Brazil is, the Olympics should never have been given to Rio. They just don't have the $$ or, more importantly, the infrastructure to build all the venues and provide the transportation needed. I predict that it will be the biggest nightmare-of-an-Olympic-Games in our lifetimes.

Oh wait Australia has had many many years of the same,so has Britain. In actual fact when you needed the help of your allies to invade Iraq you had no problem turning to a our Labour Government which in fact is further left than our Social Democrat Party.

So pre-2003, before the Workers' Party came into power in Brazil, its citizens weren't poor? Does that also mean that Finland is just coming out of a 30-year depression?

When a country as resource rich as Brazil is going through such a an economic hardship as to be experiencing a bad contraction right now, I just wonder about the type of government. To me it's a natural question. Not that economies don't go up and down, but economic policies have a lot to do with it. I see they are in real political turmoil right now. They seem to have a lot of government involvement with a heavy hand in so many of their industries. Plenty of points ripe for corruption. Instead of the government being able to try to deal with falling oil and gas prices they seem to be trying to deal with corruption cases.
Several years ago I remember reading how Brazil was a real pioneer in the alternative fuel arena and had a lot of cars on the road using those fuels. I thought then how cool that was and was wondering how long before we saw widespread use here and in other countries. It's too bad to see a country like Brazil - with so much economic promise - only have garbage and sewage laden rivers to offer Olympic athletes.
You're right, I shouldn't have brought it up.
