I have been meaning to ask this for a while, but today was a day that I swear if it goes on any longer I am going to cut my hair shorter than a your average 18 year old basic training recruit.
I will be 50 this year. In the last year or so, my hair has turned into someone else's because I sure isn't what it used to be. It is dry and frizzy-where it used to be thick, shiny and curly. I have some grey, but not a lot and I honestly don't have an issue with that, but the texture change is killing me.
So is this normal? I would ask my mom, but she has always had much finer, thinner hair and hers never did what mine is doing. I get that it is supposed to thin, but the frizzy dry thing? Is that just something that I am going to either live with or shave my head bald to get rid of??

My hair changed texture. It was always a little wavy, but as time goes by it's becoming coarser and curlier (and not curly in a good way, either). I love my flat iron!

I think so. Then add prednisone to the mix and I don't know who the hecks hair is on my head anymore. And then humidity, too and oh holy hell! I was mostly a wash and go most of my life now I find I am using an iron more and more. I don't like it. I was so blessed with being able to be lazy for so long. Thankfully the hair loss from other drugs has stopped. So, yes, I think getting older isn't kind to our hair.

Shaving your head isn't going to help. Your hair is just naturally going to be more dry. I use Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum to keep down the frizz and flyaways and I deep condition as often as possible. It also helps if you don't shampoo every day.
I'm 52 and (obviously) fully gray (although I prefer silver!) and I use a purple shampoo so that's extra drying. Lots and lots of thick conditioner is my friend and I try not to use a ton of product - just the Super Skinny I mentioned above (I use it on dry hair - very sparingly, rubbed into my hands and then through my hair.)

Coconut oil treatment once or twice a week. I swear it has improved my almost 50 year old hair.

going through "the change" did a major change on my hair too. It went from super thick to what feels thin to me. It is dry dry dry and the curl pattern has changed. I chopped about three feet off in February. I am SOOO much happier with it being really short (pixie type of cut) I had the top left a little long and depending on the weather or look I want I use either a hair wax to get the curls to lay in a specific pattern (think 1920s marcel wave look) if it is "formal business" at work and I need to look uber polished; or if it is a more business casual day I use Moroccan oil to tame the frizz but let the curls go free.

Use a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel when you get out of the shower. Someone here posted that tip, and it has made a real difference with frizziness. Also, Redken has a good line of products for frizzy hair.

I keep hoping mine is going to dry out some but it never has. I'm still having to wash it every day. My hair has never been one of my favorite features. It's fine and lifeless.

I am 58. Holy shit how did that happen?!?
Anyway, I always had the perfect 1970's hair, thick, straight, long, parted in the middle.
I couldn't figure out how to keep the Farrah wings going though. I embraced the curly perm & puffy hair of the 1980's...loved that!
Had a hair stylist in the 90's that gave me a great cut & helped thin it out some to make it more sleek as it was seeming to get frizzy & bushy as I aged...but she spiraled out to alcohol issues so I moved to someone else...
I'm struggling to find my hairstyle now. And oh, the frizz...

I just turned 41 yesterday but noticed that my hair (and skin) have gotten much drier than they used to be. I have been trying all kinds of hair products and shampoos to find something that will work. The best I have found is Its a 10 leave in and Argan oil, but my hair still isn't how it used to be.

My hair has gotten frizzier in the past 5 years or so. I find that Argan oil helps. I also try to let it dry naturally. Finally, it seems to look better on the second day. After washing my hair every day for years, 2nd Day Hair feels a bit dirty to me, but it looks pretty good.

Yes- mine has changed- more dry and frizzy. It's very short and I haven't dried it over 20 years-just use gel, fluff it, and spritz. I do use Argan oil- it helps some. I may have to try the cotton T-shirt trick!

I'm almost the same age as you. My hair has been changing for the last 15 years. I'm still a wash and go girl, but my hair is getting grayer (which I'm okay with), thinner, curlier but not in a good way--it's wiry and uncooperative now, and if anything it's gotten greasier. I used to be able to wash it every other day but not anymore. If I don't wash it every single day, it gets so flat and greasy looking. It's awful.

I have fifty year old hair. It is probably healthier than ever. I only wash it every other day and most days just blow dry it for about a minute or two and then let it air dry. I also take a fish oil capsule every morning. It seemed to work for my dog, so I thought I should try it too. I can tell it is thinning though.

Your statement "in the last year or so" seems a bit sudden for what your describing. I would suggest getting your thyroid/hormones checked.

If I put enough product in my hair it might stay curly. I haven't really tried as I wash it at night and straighten it in the AM. The curls could be nice if they would last and it's pretty straight but frizzy by morning. Straightening iron in 5 minutes makes it straight and perfect.

Try biotin - it works Also, talk to your hairdresser. Mine is a great help on things like this. It would also be good to have bloodwork done and be sure you are getting what you need vitamin and mineral wise as well as being sure your thyroid is not off. Your hair will reflect deficiencies. As we get older, our diet does not give us all we need. Or rather, our digestive system is not able to winnow out the stuff we need as well as it used to.
(I'm 66 and my hair is mid length down my back. I find that "old-lady" hair works better for me when it is longer and can be pulled back. Long hair does not need as much a style as short does.)

Mine has gotten coarser and drier, too. Cutting back to washing only every other day and using a deep conditioner once a week has helped a lot. (I swear by the cheap Aussie 3-Minute Miracle. I'm afraid to put actual oil in my hair - did that once with younger DD during a bout with lice, and we ended up having to use Dawn dish soap to get it all out AFTER we had already washed several times with shampoo. I would think stripping the hair that way leaves it worse off than before you put in the oil, but YMMV.)
I also find that it works better with a longer style. I wore my hair short for much of my 20s and 30s, but if I did that now, I think I would look like a puff ball most of the time. Long layers are your friend.

It has been happening a little longer than that, but it is in the last year or so that it has started to bother me. One a more personal note, I think that I am still in the peri-menopause phase as I still have regular periods (albeit shorter than when I was younger) so I don't think that my hormones are on full on freak out yet. But it is something I will bring up next time I go in for my check up. It is just that I used to have nice hair and now I have icky hair that I hate. Having bad hair days every day is not fun.

Took many shampoos to get it out. But the unrefined rinses out well with hot water, and then only takes me about 2 1/2 to 3 runs with the shampoo to get out. My hair is soft and manageable afterwards. I use this coconut oil, per the recommendation from Jordan's video (above): Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

My hair is definitely changing. I've stopped washing it everyday and I'm seriously cutting down on the amount of heat I use on it. I deep condition every few days with Frizz Ease and it's in much better condition now. I also use VO5 Hot Oil once a month.

My hair totally changed! I always thought that "little old ladies" got perms to make their hair so wavy. Now I know that your hair just automatically becomes that way when you get older.
All my life my hair was stick straight and now it's fuzzy not matter how I condition it.
Getting old sucks!
