it's weird because I just saw on tv a week or so ago a news clip about him and I thought he died but they were advertising a spot about his retiring from 60 minutes...
He was iconic....

I just watched the special on him that 60 minutes did last Sunday. He is the third to retire from 60 minutes and drop dead the next week or so. Andy Rooney and Tim Russert did the same thing.

That's sad. DH and I both made the same comment when we saw the news clip - that we thought he had died already. He sure had a long, interesting life. May he rest in peace.

I heard on radio that he was sick and CBS ran special asap so he could see.
What a life he lead.

Tim Russert worked for NBC. He was doing promos for Meet the Press when he had his heart attack at the studio. Maybe, Harry Reasoner?

This is so very sad......I wonder if he was sick. I haven't heard. I think they said he had been retired only 4 days!
I just think of the dreams and/or plans that he had made with his family.

Oh, how sad. I grew up with Mr. Safer and 60 Minutes. He was one of my dad's favorite reporters.

Andy Rooney died just about 5 weeks after retirement; Ed Bradley died of leukemia in 2006, Morley Safer - one week after retirement; Mike Wallace died in 2012. They were all amazing journalists who also lived amazing lives. We enjoyed the tribute on Sunday and remembered so many of Morley's interviews (the one with Jackie Gleason was just so good).
They loved what they did and we got to see the world and us in a new way because of them.

Does anyone know if CNN plans to rerun the special? We missed it and I'd love to see it. Just forgot to program the DVR to catch it.

Kinda makes you want to think before retiring from that show. ( or taking a job there in the first place ) Superstitious I know. Not sure if I'm actually kidding or not. Actually I think I may be a generational thing. My father did the same thing ( not for 60 mins though ha ha ) he worked at a job he enjoyed simply until he could not. I think many from that generation, at least the ones who did a job they wanted to do, just kept working until the just couldn't.

I just read that the timing of his retirement and the special was specifically because his health was failing... and obviously failing fast.
