I've only ever done box color, and salon visits. I am going to Sally Beauty to get color to do my base color all over, then a friend will do highlights. I am unsure totally of what I'm getting? Bottle of developer (she mentioned a 6? ), and a tube of color? Is that all?
Thanks oh wise peas!

the 6 she told you would refer to the level of the color, not the developer. she's telling you to pick a color you want, with 6 being the first number. it will be followed by a letter or two indicating what the base color is, as in red violet, gold, red gold, ash, etc. the developers come in 10, 20 and 30 weights, the higher the number the more lightening they do. they come in cream and liquid, I prefer cream as it's easier to work with. you will probably want 20 weight developer. I prefer cream as it's easier to work with, but you might want to check with your friend. 10 weight is good if your hair dyes super easy, or you are going darker than your natural color. 30 weight is used with tougher-to-dye hair, highlights.
good luck! at our sally's, the people are friendly and helpful. hopefully you will find the same. it's not hard, and you're right- you'll be leaving with 2 things- a box of dye and a bottle of developer.
ETA Oh, if you don't have a bottle to mix them up with at home, pick one up there. they have measuring marks on the side for your developer, add that in before your color. they have pointed tips for ease of application, and can be washed and reused.

Got this. Hope it's not too dark. Need to get an even base, and do blond streaks next week.
