I think DD and I are going to visit this during our summer vacation. DD is into animal conservation (she is planning on volunteering at least 100 hours at the local zoo this summer), and we both think safari parks are the "right" way to do a zoo.
I'm having trouble determining what is included in the base ticket. I think it is the Africa Tram plus maybe areas you can walk through??
Has anyone done any of the other safaris? If we didn't add on a safari, how long should we plan on staying at the park?
We would be coming from Anaheim. Is it worth the drive? Is there a scenic drive we can take to get there?
Thanks for the help!

Haven't been in a very long time, so don't want to be too specific. But we loved the wild animal park! You can take the tram all around the outside of the park and see a lot, as well as do a ton of walking into various areas/animals. Never did an actual "safari" though, but from the looks from the tram you actually go into some of the areas for much more up close and personal. If cost wasn't too high I would probably do now with older kids. For scenic drive, I think you could come down the coast on highway 1 before heading inland, that wouldn't be a very fast option. I recall driving through Temucula and the surrounding wine areas to be scenic more inland.

We did the cheetah safari, because my dd loves cheetahs and the extra money goes to them specifically. We thought it was worth the extra money and enjoyed it. We spent the majority of the day there and did a lot of walking. We cut out early because I unfortunately got a migraine and got sick in the early afternoon, but we missed some stuff because of this.

We went. It was a lot of walking. Lots to see for free, but if you have an animal lover, the safaris or special tours are so worth it. We did the tiger tour/safari and it was amazing!!

I love the Safari Park! We did the safari where we road in the back of the truck. We got an upclose look at the rhinos and giraffes. Well worth the extra $$.

A lot of the Safari Park is set up like a zoo that you walk through and that is included in the base ticket along with animal encounters, shows and the African Tram. They will make photo stops throughout the drive (but you don't get out of the tram), so if you want to get closer you might want to consider one of the other safaris. We always head to the tram first because the lines build through the day. You do need to plan a bit if you want to see certain animals and be in the right area at the right time for the animal encounters and shows. Coming from Anaheim the drive is going to be mostly through surburban sprawl on the 5 and 78. Once you leave the 78 the drive is more scenic for the last few miles to the park. The drive on the 5 will take you through Camp Pendleton which is right along the coast and with no development. I do think the trip is worth it, especially with your DD interested in animal conservation.

I love the Safari Park, it is right by my house so we have annual passes. I think it is well worth the money and the drive. The ticket price gets you into the park, but some to the excursions are additional $. They have a ropes course that is really cool and also some animal encounters and tours that are pricey, but really great.
I would plan on staying the whole day. It will most likely be really hot (it gets scorching down in the valley), so cool clothes, sunscreen and a lot of water.

Thanks for all of the great info. I think we'll do one of the safaris. This sounds like it will be a load of fun. LivingSocial has a discount on the base ticket this week, so I'll make sure I grab it before it is gone.

I agree, we also bought the refillable cups, had a drink first then just refilled them all day with water. Easy to carry because they have the handle. Don't forget the sunscreen chapstick, it's pricey at the gift shop. I would also wear a hat.

For that price and drinking water you might be better off buying the regular plastic cup which is in the $5-6 range and asking or paying for refills which are 99 cents. They might give you the water for free. No handle, but that cup, while convenient was not worth $13 to me unless I wanted to drink more than 6 or 7 sodas. I do have one from Disneyland, sea world and Legoland, but the zoo lets you bring back the cheaper cup for refills even on another day so unless you need a handle, you can refill the cheaper cup. Disneyland does not do free refills but we wanted the equivalent of two slushies and it was the same price as two and they let us have another cup so the kids could share, and I wanted the screw cap, sea world and Legoland also do cheap refills with the handle cup. Man I never realized how much I knew about refillable cups, ha!

I haven't been in a few years, but I've been twice and enjoyed it. Plan to spend the whole day - even if you aren't doing an add-on excursion. I've never done one of those. The tram included with the ticket is fun though.
I was there in April, and then in late June - both times it was so so soooo hot. Take a hat, wear cool clothing, and plan to bring your own sunscreen. Definitely hydrate. The nice thing is, if you're not in a rush there are lots of benches to sit and enjoy some of the shade.
Have fun!

We do just buy 2 cups and share with 4 of us.

Ah that makes sense then, all of these places are somewhat local to me so I do not consider them a vacation, so I tend not to splurge on things unless they are a good value, eg popcorn is refillable at sea world but not Disneyland if you buy a bucket. I should write a secret insider's guide to being cheap at theme parks ;-)
