I'm enjoying it so far. Well done although somewhat graphic. Definitely makes me grateful to live in the times we do but respectful of what people endured.

I'm loving this remake. I have always loved the original and his family story. I hope there are many more stories similar that families were able to pass along to each other about their ancestors.

I am DVR-ing it, but haven't started it. One of my most scarring childhood experiences was watching the original miniseries (I was five, and boy did it leave an impression) -- I need to be in the right headspace for it before I watch.

No but I just heard about it. Not sure if it'll make it to New Zealand.

No but I just heard about it. Not sure if it'll make it to New Zealand. They were talking about it on a show last night -either seven sharp or the other one on tv3....sorry can't remember which one, but I did see it...

I am. I never saw the original, but read the novel last year. I found it a great read. But I swear I don't remember things in this remake that happened in the novel. For instance, I don't remember him joining the British to fight against the Americans!

I have been watching it and think it is very good, though I like the original better. It is hard to watch and I even had terrible dreams last night. Of course I am reading "The Boy on the Wooden Box" as well and it has been a hard read emotionally.

Recording it as well. The weather is supposed to be yukky all weekend, so I plan on catching up then. I saw the original when it aired in the 70s, so I am looking forward to watching this version.

I recorded the first 3 episodes and watched almost all of them last night. I really like the remake. I remember watching it in the 1970's but don't remember any of the show now, so I can't compare. I think it's very well done for a network (non cable) show. I believe it has to be graphic because of the material it is covering.
Kunta Kinte arrived here in Annapolis, MD at city dock. There is a statue here of Alex Haley reading to 3 children of different ethic backgrounds. Next to the sculptures is the Story Wall-a series of 10 markers topped with bronze plaques lining the retaining sea wall. On each of the plaques is a quote from "Roots".
I've been down there dozens of times over the years but it will have so much more significance now that I've seen the film again.

I watched part 1 last night, I liked it. Not as much as the original, which I just rewatched a couple years ago, but I did still like it. I did notice that part of why I liked the original was because I didn't know the actors. Of course I was young so older people may have known them for other things but I didn't. I did struggle with Forrest as Fiddler because I have been watching him in one of the Criminal Minds series very recently.

Guess I'm in the minority, old enough to LOVE the original and started watching the new version, have to say I'm not a fan. I'm not comparing, this one is just not doing it for me.It's not grabbing me as emotionally as the first one did.

My husband and I watched it on DVR. It brought us both to tears many times. I vaguely remember watching it the first time around, but I was only about ten years old. Our one complaint was that there were many many times we had to rewind because we just couldn't understand what they were saying. It almost seemed like the sound wasn't clear and combined with their accents or the way they spoke made it difficult to get.

On my phone so I don't have a link, but last year when this was first talked about, I saw an article totally disproving all of Haley's claims and stories... I won't watch out read anything related any more and it makes me so sad because roots was a huge thing for me to read growing up...

We just finished watching it tonight, and I loved it. I didn't watch it the first time around, so can't compare, but I thought it was well made and very moving. I would imagine the story and characters are composites, rather than being strictly historically accurate.

I just finished watching it a couple days ago, and for the final episode I had to use the closed captioning. I liked it. I was in grade school when the original aired so I didn't remember the story at all.
