Tie. He will take it off as soon as they start dancing, but start with the tie. Tell him to put the tie in his pocket, or he will lose it!

No tie. Gingham is casual.

If he is digging the Vineyard Vines style ask him how he would feel about a bow tie. They are really popular with teen boys these days that dress in that style. If he says yes, then don't go matchy matchy in color, go with a color that is in the same tone, but contrasting. Check the Vineyard Vines site, they have some great ones to get an idea.
For example, at graduation the other night, the young man across the way from where we were sitting was wearing khaki shorts, a pink gingham shirt just like the one you posted and bright blue bow tie. Adorable.

No tie. There's no point. Bow tie maybe but a regular tie? Nope. Not cool. Or necessary. Especially with gingham.

Oh, I forgot to mention-yes with gingham shirt/bow tie, no regular tie and no jacket. Most of the kids around here opt for the bow tie (and it looks fine with khakis) but skip the jacket. Actually, a lot of grown men do too.

If he wanted a tie I would suggest a bow tie. Or a solid light color tie. Key words would be IF HE wanted a tie. If he doesn't then I'd skip it. Totally. What does that color gingham look like in person? I can't get past a navy blazer with that green I see on my screen, but I can't trust screen colors. Maybe it's my screens interpretation of that color but it doesn't look like it would go with navy? Don't go by me I have no idea what the real life colors look like together and I'm not a fashion authority or anything. . So carry on. I hope he has fun and enjoys himself

Is a jacket the norm for your area? It's different from state to state. Here, the boys all wore vests and colored shirts or suspenders and bow ties. Some had regular ties, some had no ties, and no one had a jacket. And almost all of them wore brand spanking new white Vans. I'm ready for white vans to go away...

I'm the last person to give out fashion advice. But I can't get past the price of that shirt. No judgement from me, I may actually live in a cave, but that's for real?? I've never paid more than $40 for a top for myself and that was long after I stopped growing.

I would say no tie. A quick Google search for Vineyard Vines gingham does several styling options, but none of them have a tie.

No tie.
And $98 for a shirt for a boy in 8th grade just made my head explode.

I'm another in the "no tie with gingham" camp.
And there's no way I'd ever pay that much for a child's shirt.
ETA: I apologize for commenting on the price. It was rude of me. I'll own it. It also occurred to me that it was sexist, as I recently shelled out that much for another prom dress for my DD that she'll probably never wear again.

No tie, unless he wants to do a bow tie. He could do a skinny tie/no jacket, but if others are wearing jackets, I get that.
Also, I'm sorry to see some peas being rude about the price of the shirt.

Not needed, but a bow tie would dress up the outfit for this fun event. Hope your son has a great time at the dance.

I agree with no tie and also agree that the comments on the price are unnecessary and rude.

I think the light bright green will pop with the navy. If he wants a tie/bow tie, paisley pairs well with gingham.

VV style is pretty popular-it is like an updated version of the preppy boys from my high school years. All the way down to their Sperrys.

For a dance, I would insist on a tie just to get him into the idea certain events in life ARE dress up. I think a dance falls into the "this is a dress up event" because once he is out of high school any dance he is invited to or expected to attend will be a "tie affair" if not a full on tux affair. His future wife will thank you that you taught him dressing up is expected and not just a bare minimum to get by.
I'd go with a contrasting solid color tie.

For an eighth grade dance, no tie. There will be other opportunities to dress up more, but a junior high dance probably isn't that formal. It is a dance, so being more comfortable is probably more important. Kids do need to learn how to really dress up, but this isn't the place (my guess). My kids were more casual in junior high and then made the adjustment for high school and beyond. My youngest, 20, loves to get dressed up and look good for more formal occasions. Yesterday we were in Kohl's forever looking for the right tie for a wedding. This is for the kid who could do all of his school shopping in less than 30 minutes.

It looks like your boy is a snappy dresser! Are other kids wearing jackets - is there a specific dress code? I think that shirt is fine with either blazer or tie.

Love that shirt! The color I'm seeing on my screen would go nicely with navy. And I love the idea of the bow tie.

More so you don't have to feel obligated to buy one if you don't own one.

No tie. And $98 for a shirt for a boy in 8th grade just made my head explode. Luckily we bought the shirt 3 years ago, and it still fits so I've gotten more than my money's worth. His was cheaper it was a boys shirt not the men's version I posted.
