This would be my first "grown up" (read: not IKEA) furniture purchase and I'm wondering if I should be expecting to be able to negotiate or not. I'm considering a chair and ottoman with upgraded fabric if that makes a difference... Any stories or suggestions? Thanks!

When we were outfitting our new place, I knew I wanted a premium leather (the nice thick heavy stuff) living room furniture.
I saved up cash for 4-6 months, did my homework, shopped and compared 3 stores and did a 1st, 2nd, 3rd... I walked into my first choice with cash in hand, and told them what I would like and offered cash that was about 30% less than what they had priced everything out to be. I was over the moon when they accepted!
We purchased a sofa, double chair, ottoman to match . Love it every day that I see it and no debt on it.
I think walking in with the cash helped me get the deal. We got $4500 of furniture for less than $3000 including tax and delivery!

I suppose stores/location/management might vary. We've never been successful at negotiating at Haverty's. That's the only furniture store that refused to offer a group pricing.

No, I do not think Havertys will negotiate at all. Maybe if you were buying scratch and dent but for premium fabric, etc? I doubt it.
I do know the delivery fees are not negotiable.

We don't have Haverty's, but DH always tries to negotiate the price on furniture. Sometimes he's successful, sometimes he's not. He starts by suggesting a "deal" - if we buy the sofa and chair, will you throw in the ottoman for free? - and if they say no, he will usually ask, ok, what's the best price you can give me on this set? It's very rare they don't knock at least a few hundred dollars off. But sometimes they take the deal. I agree that it does help if you go in there with cash.

Hmmm . . . I bought all my bedroom furniture at Haverty's. I spent quite a chunk of money there. It didn't even occur to me that I could negotiate. I'll be following this thread with interest to see what experiences others have had.

We did last year. We bought a king sized Tempurpedic mattress, adjustable base, and bed. Tempurpedic mattresses are the same price no matter where you buy. They do go on sale, but they did not have a sale going on. I was going to wait for a sale before we bought. We ended up negotiating the price of the bed and the delivery fee was waived. All in all, we saved about $500. But then, we spent almost $8,000... But it came out to be the same as if there was a Tempurpedic sale going on.

When we bought all new furniture (two truck loads full!) we were told there was no negotiating on the delivery fee...though they did throw in furniture cleaning supplies (yay...not!).

Boo Havertys. About a year ago we bought a new bedroom set, around $3500, a splurge for us. Our prior set, although still in great condition was 30 years old and dated. About 6 months later one of the rails that the drawers slide on broke or bent or "something." We could not move the drawer on my dresser.
The only things in the drawer were underwear--obviously nothing heavy.
My DH somehow got it to go in after an hour or longer.
So I called Havertys, then sent someone out who agreed it was a defect and I would receive a new dresser.
It was scheduled to be delivered. They emailed, texted, called literally about a total of eight times the day before confirming delivery the next day.
Then I received a call, the replacement was defective.
Then they said it was discontinued. This particular set was the set that was the first one you would see as you go into the store. The "star" so to speak.
So I cannot use this drawer. They offered me $70 to "settle."
I would rather let people know this way--BEWARE OF HAVERTYS--CRUMMY PRODUCT AND CRUMMY CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Sorry I was not able to answer your question about negotiating because we did not. Just waited for a "sale." But it seemed like all of their sales are the same.
