grinningcat, you wouldn't be roasted alive as there are many who are on your side. Grateful to live in Canada, although we do have flaws as well.

I heard 53 dead. So sad. Things like this just cement the fact that we need to be able to defend ourselves at any time and any place. You never know what is going to happen. There was an armed, off duty police officer who was there as it happen as security for the bar. He reacted immediately when he heard the shots. In the end, it took a full armed SWAT team to stop him. I find it hard to believe that in the heat of the moment an armed citizen could have made a single bit of difference. Not in the beginning, not during the heat of confusion of a bar full of people who received an update on facebook that said 'get of pulse and keep running', not during the exchange of gunfire between the man and police before the SWAT team arrived and certainly not during the exchange with the SWAT team. And, like Meri-Lyn said, I can almost be assured that there was more than the police officer there who was armed. This is, after all, the south and even 'the gays' carry guns-in spite of whatever ridiculous homophobic nonsense people think. I would also be willing to guess that at least one of the staff members had access to a weapon of some sort. It is still, after all, a bar with tons of money coming in and a target of opportunity for thieves. So no. While I am sitting here watching the coverage of this evil act of hate, while my son and his friends are planning a field trip to donate blood to our neighbors in Orlando, while I am still waiting to make sure that all my friends/family and their friends/family are safely accounted for...now is not the time to say that if one armed citizen could have made all the difference. I am squarely in the middle of the road when it comes to gun control. But today is not the day to turn this, this greatest mass gun event in the history of our nation, into a political discussion.

Rainbow - if you knew what the fuck you were talking about, you would know that the shooter exchanged fire with a uniformed officer on extra duty at the club first, BUT was still able to enter the club then slaughter 50 people and serious injure 53 with a semi-automatic assault weapon. You really need to learn to keep your trap shut sometimes. I'm sure there are multiple stories out there we all haven't seen/read the same ones. Regardless, it doesn't change that we each need to be able to defend ourselves at a moment's notice. I'm not sure why you may think this is a horrible thing to say, especially in light of the current circumstances. You've seen way to many movies if you think you'll be able to pull out your weapon and actually hit a moving target that is shooting at you or others. Trained LEO's have trouble hitting gunmen in these situations. All you would end up doing is either shooting some innocent bystander or drawing the gunman's attention to you.

That means I am not just watching the national media outlets-part of my local news comes out of Orlando. I am getting information from national, state, local and other news outlets. Not to mention the grapevine news. So while I appreciate that there are news stories that people aren't seeing, I am in the middle of information overload and I will say again, a random citizen carrying a weapon would not have been one to make a difference-which is evidenced in the biggest way possible in that NO ONE OTHER THAN THE ATTACKER AND THE POLICE DREW WEAPONS.

I'm confused at why they are calling this a domestic terror incident vs a hate crime. Did this have anything to do with government? From what I read this beast targeted these people because of their sexual preference. Of course that is just what I read around the internet so who knows what is true. It breaks my heart that people are killed for being gay. It is nobody's business but their own. So sad today. Prayers for the victims and their families. Makes me so sad. I just read an article that some people are coming out praising what this person did because it was a gay night club. Disgusting. Wow that is disgusting

What I do know is that this event will be used as others were and still are to erode my right to defend myself if I need to do so. Look at California now. The vast majority can't carry at all now. It's unconstitutional. Bear arms. Bear. Now the criminals have the upper hand. Congratulations California. Stop the sadness and defend yourselves.

I'm so sick of all this. Normally I am an optimistic person, but I seriously think that there is no end to this madness. I'm so heart-broken for all those families who are grieving loved ones.

And once again I'm disgusted by Texas leaders...Lt. Governor tweeting "You reap what you sow." Disgusting. Beyond disgusting. WTF???!!!
Same reaction to the tweet mentioned earlier in the thread. That is NOT what most Christians believe. We may not agree with what someone else believes, but would never dream of taking someone's life over it. Jesus is weeping.

Stop the sadness and defend yourselves. But we can infer that someone who might have been carrying a weapon in the club didn't make a difference. They did not draw nor fire one. It was only the armed law enforcement officers that did. And honestly, right now California isn't the right parallel discussion-Florida is a right to carry state. We have guns. Lots of people, even in the big cities, have guns. There is an abundance of guns right there in the middle of the happiest place in the world. And that made zero difference in this case. So if you are going to make the case, make the case based on THIS discussion. Not a hypothetical look at California.

How did this guy get permits for these weapons (as someone upthread stated) if he'd been investigated by the FBI? This is just what I'm hearing reported, so of course, all is fluid. He was a licensed security guard, so he could buy weapons fairly easily. The FBI investigation was into someone he knew, and when they looked into the other person, they deemed that he was not involved and cleared him. Again, media reports change by the minute, but that's what I've heard so far.

There probably wasn't anyone in there carrying. They don't allow it in any club I've ever been in. And yes, see where it got us. We need to be able to defend ourselves! How many times does this have to happen before people get that forbidding people from defending themselves is not helping? And how many Islamic terrorists have to kill Americans before we get that they want us dead? They kill homosexuals in their countries. Now that is happening here. They want us dead. There's no talking to them about this. How could you reason with someone who would do such a thing? ENOUGH! I have had enough of your trollish, bigoted, idiotic, inane behaviour. I've had it. You need to go far far away. I'm done with you. And so should everyone else. Go to fucking hell with your bigoted, dangerous obsession with guns. THIS IS NOT THE TIME NOR THE PLACE TO SPEW YOUR FUCKING BULLSHIT ABOUT EVERYONE HAVING GUNS. You are the lowest of the lowest scum. That you even think that you're right is infuriating. Honestly? And I don't say this lightly. I hate you and every single thing you stand for. You are an embarrassment and you should be ashamed of yourself. You won't be though because you are too stupid and too fucking idiotic to realize how fucking stupid and wrong you really are. Go away and stay in your cave troll. That's where you belong. Actually a cave is too good for you. Just go far away and stop insulting people with your presence. For the rest of the peas, I'm sorry for my outburst. I'm sure I'll be roasted alive for it. But I don't give a flying fuck anymore. I've reached the end of my chain with this sack of flesh. I can't even call her a woman or a human being. She deserves nothing, especially not our camaraderie. That she's here is a disgrace. I'm out. No flames from me, just applause! Thank you for saying exactly what needed to be said.

I'm heartbroken about this and I'm having a hard time processing the news.
This is my community. The concert venue where Christina Grimmie was murdered was a popular movie theatre when I was a teenager - that's where I first saw Indiana Jones and where we used to go see midnight showings of Rocky Horror. I drive past Pulse several times a week. These places are part of the landscape of my home town.
My daughter and her friends are trying to track down friends who were known to be regulars at Pulse - at least 4 are still unaccounted for.
The massacre at Pulse is about hate and intolerance, but the response has been about love. The blood banks have more donors than they can process. People are bringing food and beverages to donors standing in line, and businesses near the blood banks that are normally closed on Sundays opened up to provide donors with bathrooms, air conditioning, and wifi.
Another day will be the time to talk about gun laws - I don't think today is that day. I think today is a day to think of the victims and their families and to act with love, not hate.
