I have a huge stack of documents and my shredder only takes like 3 sheets at a time. Would you put them in the recycling bin for the trash men to pick up? I am talking about putting them in right before they pick up (I can hear them before they get to the house).... so no one has time to dig through the bin. Or is that too risky? I am sure the answers would be too risky.. but I don't want to shred all this crap. I can wait but just thought I would throw it out there to see what peas would do.

I wouldn't put them out. Of course, I'm kinda paranoid like that. I'd just have everything set up and shread some a few times a day. I think it'd go fast.

Nope, I'd shred them in frequent, small batches.

I'm not really paranoid about stuff like that.. just wonder if something would happen to them between the garbage men and where ever recycling goes. I probably won't do it... but sure is tempting.

take them to your bank & ask them to throw them in their shredder bins. Banks, at least here, shred all garbage for confidentiality. Call them first to see if its possible

nope would not do it. I would burn them instead. But, then we have a daughter who lives outside city limits where it is OK to burn. We just have to be careful about paper pieces floating up with the updraft.

Here are the different scenarios of what can happen .. 1 - The papers can fly out of the truck on the highway (I've seen this happen, random piece of paper fly out of the garbage truck). 2 - The truck overturns and all the papers go flying across the highway. 3 - The garbage men are in cahoots with the identity thieves. OK, that is all my vivid imagination can think of right now. I too have a huge bag of papers waiting to be shredded. One day!

You can take it to Office Depot and pay to have it shredded. Or to a shredding place. I'd rather pay than do it myself 3 pages at a time.

I have a trash can that is dedicated to "Needs shredded" mail/documents. Twice a year my work place has a shredding company come with one of their shredding trucks and I take my stuff in then. As employees we are able to have it shredded for free on that day.
But, if that wasn't an option I'd check online for document destruction services and see what is in your community or at the office supply places (Office Max, Staples, Kinkos even) many of them offer a shredding service that uses the big industrial shredder. They charge by the pound.
Some of the goodwill stores also offer shredding services but I've not felt good about using them. eta: the one I went to had the shredder in a back room and didn't allow my to go. I wanted to witness the process to make sure they got shredded and not just tossed out or not dug through before being shredded.

It's so windy out here where we are, I'd be afraid the papers would blow out of the trashcan and end up in neighboring yards.
I'd shred them a little at a time at home.

I'm not really paranoid about stuff like that I never used to be either...until one day I was walking several hundred meters up the road from where I live and there was a telephone bill stuck to the wet pavement and something caught my eye about it...MY NAME! Yep, my old phone bill that I had put in the recycling bin was halfway up the road with my name address, bill details etc. for anyone walking past too see. I went and bought a decent cross cut shredder and have shredded everything since. Nothing with my name or other details goes into any bin now.
I'd either buy a newer, better shredder, or if you have the option, burn them.

No, I wouldn't NOT shred them. If you can't do it yourself over time, I'd recommend googling document shredding/destruction in your area.
In my area, there is a center for the developmentally disabled that offers this service for a very small fee based on weight. I had a lot of documents from work that I took there once and I was so impressed. My order was picked up at the door by one of the job trainees and his coach, and brought on a cart to the shredder. I watched while he shredded the material. I actually paid more than I was charged, because as a special educator (SLP), I was so excited that these adults had this job opportunity.
Maybe something like that exists in your area.

Risky, if they are for work I wouldn't do it. I had a huge pile for work and just kept them on my desk and put a few every time I walked by. Or take a match to them and burn them. jen

This is how I operate, too. I am this way at work, as well. Any piece of paper that contains more than a first name (No matter how important it is or isn't) goes into my shred pile.

I'd buy a different shredder to pay someone to shred them. Amazon has ones that shred 8-12 sheets for about $100. Then go paperless for everything that you can to make the future easier on you.

Definitely would not put them in the recycle bin. I would check around and see if any banks or credit unions in your area offer free shredding. Sometimes the city or county will offer shred days as well. Also check with document shredding companies. There is one locally that will take personal papers a few times a month (specific days/hours) and will shred them for free, while you watch. That's what I plan to do when I finish going through my mom's old papers. I've already found papers from both grandparents (died in 1986 and 1999) that have full social security numbers! Those must be shredded for sure.

No Our police station has a collection bin at city hall. It is a locked garbage can that is then collected and shredded. It is a free service.

No, I would not put them out like that.
Even in my neck of the woods, there are drives where you can bring you boxes of documents to shred.
Maybe your area has something similar?

I'd take it to work. My new job doesn't have a shredder though, but a locked bin that gets picked up a shredding company. I saw the employee come once and I thought who trusts him not to look at anything you know? He grabs the papers by hand and puts them into his no lid basket, so I won't be using that. I had a piece of paper with my SS# on it and I tore off that tiny piece and burned it on my stove.

I don't know what documents you have that are so sensitive . Most of my bills are electronic now, but anything I get with personal details on is dealt with on a handle once basis. I remove the personal details, usually name, address, account numbers etc and shred that. The rest goes recycle.

I'd take it to work. We have secure document removal because it's a law firm.

You could hire a kid to shred them for you. My mother has paid my kids for years. She'd save it all up for when we'd go to visit. lol. I think it was her way of giving them money without just handing it to them. She told them she just hated the sound of it, which may or may not have been true.

Many places pay by the pound to have their documents shredded, and I don't think they want to pay to have all their employees have their stuff shredded too. Now, there are some places that actually do that for their employees, and if that is your situation, then rock on! As far as the OP, I would either shred it a few at a time, burn it, or go to one of these places: Paper Shredding Service

Proof of residency would be a utility bill.

Check with your city.... Twice a year our city does a shred day, the shredding company comes in and you just take it up there and watch them shred it right there... (big huge machine in the parking lot) And the surrounding cities do it on other weekends, so if we miss ours, we usually know someone in another city to take it to.
