Earlier this summer I had a very scary experience where I was followed during a run. The man was eventually arrested. However, it has really made me think about my personal safety.
I now run with mace and stick to well populated areas. No more parks for me.
For the last week I have used the free Road Id app. It is amazing!!!!
You set the app up to automatically text preset contacts when you start an outside activity. It texts them with an estimated time and link to track your movements on a map. When you are done you stop the app and it sends another text.
An amazing feature is an alert signal. If you stop moving for 5 minutes an alert is pushed out to all your presets. You have the option of keeping this from happening when you hear the safety buzzer.
It is an amazing free app that provides so much peace of mind. My dh has been able to track me no matter where he is. Today he is across the country and was able to watch me. It makes him feel so much less helpless.
I know we talked about the bracelets a few weeks ago, but I wanted to throw this out there for my fellow peas who missed the app.
Be safe ladies!

Oh that's so cool! I have the road id bracelet which i only sometimes wear. It would also be good for kids walking home from school. I run in a safe neighborhood but still good to be safe. Thanks!

I make my oldest son use this when he's running up our side street. It is very long and windy so lots of blind spots and even though it's 25 mph most people drive 45.

Hey TankTop - how's the running going? I have been thinking about you and wondering if you are getting any closer to wanting to try a 5k yet. You know you can do it based on what you were running a couple weeks ago. I have nevr heard of this app but it sounds lie a great idea. I run in the neighborhood mostly, down to the small park and back. Occasionally I run at dusk into dark because it is cooler and I don't like people watching me, especially on days that running is a struggle. This app seems perfect for then, at least for me. I know my husband isn't crazy about my night runs. Sorry you had a scary experience and even scarier to me to think it was arrest worthy. Some people are just creeps. My favorite park is very open, very heavily populated all the time and I actually feel safer running there than anywhere else, I just get lazy and don't feel like making the trek over there and it seems silly driving 2 miles to go for a run but I may rethink it. Thanks for sharing the app. We need to always be looking out for each other, every one of us.

Thanks for sharing! I know elaine uses a running app too that texts her husband when she stops for 5 minutes.

What a great app! I know my husband gets concerned when I run outside and I will talk to him about this app.

I knew about this app but haven't used it. I would love this for my daughter that runs on campus. I would rather she "buddy up" when she runs but she can't always do that. And hubby runs 6 miles each day at lunch. He runs on heavily traveled roads that worry me. Thanks for the reminder. We may be having a new family discussion.

I had never heard of this! Thanks for sharing. I am going to have my oldest son use this - he runs up to 11-12 miles a day and even though he has a running partner, sometimes he has to run alone or not run at all. This would make me feel better.

Thanks for sharing! I walk often and often after dinner. Summer isn't so bad since it's still light and there's people out but I get scared during the darker months.
BTW, I've been meaning to send you a PM and this post reminded me.

Thanks for asking marimoose. I have been working really hard the last few weeks on rebuilding. I am only running every other day now and my body is thanking me. I know I could do a 5k, but I really don't have a desire to do it any longer. I would have to do it alone. That just doesn't seem like fun to me. I have it in my mind that it is a social sort of thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is my sticking point right now.

My husband uses this for runs and bike rides and it makes me feel so much better! I'm paranoid about his health and safety anyway, but he is also on blood thinners and that makes it 100 times worse.

This is an unexpected plus of the app. You get to make fun of your husband when you check in to see how he's doing only to realize he is riding his bike in circles because he can't find his car in the parking lot Attachments:

My dh and I were just talking about something like this.
I am just now able to rollerblade after having surgery. Today I went out and went throughout our neighborhood. I had told my dh that I was only going to try to go around the block. Well, I felt good so I went around a few blocks and 30 minutes later I returned home.
He was wondering what happened because it wasn't a 5 minute trip.
Anyhow, thanks for sharing this!

they need one of these for when you make Craigslist pick ups by yourself. That's a great idea, and anyone can use it. The way I understand it worked is that he loaded the free app to his phone, at the beginning of his race he used it to send a 'crumb' to me to my phone and email. After opening that link I saw where he was in 1 minute increments and if he stopped for more than 5 minutes at one place it sent a message to me to alert me to that fact. IIRC, he got to choose to not send the msg and how long he was stopped before the message was sent. So I have his whereabouts until he stopped the session. It was kind of fun because I could 'see' him at the half-way break point and watch him walk around, get a drink and take a potty break, and I could see when he pulled over to rest. It's kind of weird because it displays the live feed over whatever the last satellite photo is of the area. So when he came home I showed him what I was guessing (where the drinks and potties were for example) to see if it matched up with reality. And when he stopped for more than 5 minutes on the route back I could see that it was a wider shoulder of road than the rest, a perfect place to safely pull over so instead of freaking out and assuming he had been hit (yes, that's where my mind goes) and calling him freaking out, I was able to be calm. Not as exciting when he uses it around the neighborhood and surrounding areas, but it still gives me peace of mind. As for using it for Craigslist safety, worst case scenario and someone is attacked at least there would be a lead as to their last location before the phone was destroyed or died. And this does drain the battery so make sure and charge your phones before using it! That's one of the reasons DH purchased a Garmin watch.

Cool! I haven't used the app; sounds like it would be good for the times I run or bike alone. Typically though, I'm with people. (ETA: I get bored when I am alone! LOL) I know I could do a 5k, but I really don't have a desire to do it any longer. I would have to do it alone. That just doesn't seem like fun to me. I have it in my mind that it is a social sort of thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is my sticking point right now. Is there a running club in your area? It's been so much fun to meet people and make new running friends. There are people of varying abilities in the group so everyone has a buddy to run with. (Our group pretty much got together as a result of mentoring and/or participating in a beginning 5K training program.) We get together socially now as well. Last night, a bunch of us went to the info session for the next group of beginner 5K people and shared our stories of how we got started and then all connected with each other. Going to races is a big social activity for us all now.
