I had the ultimate "things that make you think of the peas" moment today.
It's summer, my husband is home, so I had some time to grocery shop by myself without the kids. I decided to try out a new store that's supposed to have really good produce because we want to grill tonight.
I drive to the store and park. I notice there are NO cart corrals and there are no carts outside the store.
I shop, check out, and find out that you cannot refuse carry out service. A customer cannot leave the store with a cart. All carts must be pushed into the parking lot by a store employee, must be unloaded by the employee, and must be pushed back inside the store by the employee.
There are no cart corrals, there's no employee whose job it is to gather the carts from the parking lot.
Every employee from the manager to the cashiers to the baggers does carry out service when needed.
Not sure how I feel about this system, but it definitely made me think of the peas.

Two grocery stores in my town have baggers that will take them out for you if you ask. There are cart corrals. It wouldn't bother me if this was policy. It would annoy me if they were busy and I had to wait for someone to escort me out. The bigger question, did you have to load your groceries on the belt? You have to where I live, unless you use the basket in the cart method because the lanes are too narrow.

I'm not sure if I would like that. I like to load my car a certain way. I don't want anyone else doing it. But, at least carts wouldn't be blowing into my car!

Up until a couple of years ago, Publix was like that. Well, you could refuse to have them help out to the car, but one of the employees would discreetly trail you out to the parking lot and offer to take the buggy when you were done. These days there is a buggy parking area, but the still have swarms of people covering the parking lot offering to help either getting your bags in the car or taking the buggy when you are done. It is kind of nice though, isn't it?

I will pay extra to shop here!" I always use the basket in cart method at other stores. But the no conveyor belt thing is enough to make me convert to this store.

We have a chain of stores in my town that is like this. I love it - their prices are a touch higher than, say, Walmart, but I love the personal service.
No conveyers. No cart corrals. And I get to choose if I want paper or plastic.

When I visited an aunt, her grocery store was like this, and when the employee reached her car, she simply said to him "You can just hand me each bag, please, I'm one of those fussy folks." And that's exactly what the employee did. Save

Was it Market Street? I think they do all those things - no conveyor belts and they insist on loading your car for you. Although I do think you can refuse. Very nice shopping experience, even just the not having to unload your stuff is amazing (Trader Joe's does the same with no unloading your stuff).
I just did Walmart grocery pickup/online ordering though and am a convert. The less times I have to touch my groceries, the better.

It was Market Street, yes.
I tried to say no thank you to carry out and was told that's not an option, lol.

Great minds and all that . . .

Both owned by the same company.

At our grocery store the bagged always offers to take groceries to the car. I always decline, I like putting the groceries in the car myself, but I always use the cart corral.

It's worth driving the extra 20 miles for those types of items. My local stores actually have just as good or better prices than Wal-Mart, especially produce and dairy items.

Love United and Market Street. We do the majority of our shopping there.

When we shopped at the commissary we have/had baggers. I love it, but I'm not picky about things, they do a perfectly fine job putting the items into the bag and the bags into the car.

I don't think I'd like having them walk the cart out to my car, but I do miss the days of 'drive up' service when I lived in the small town where I grew up. The grocery store was tiny; you could leave your cart inside the store, go get your car, drive up to the front of the store, and they'd load the bags into the car for you. Especially great when it was raining!!
